Whom the Gods would destroy, they first make mad. One thing I failed to
touch on during my short discussion about the Tories the other day is their
lapse into political lassitude, or decadence. As a party in long-term
decline, their decomposition is manifesting itself in an almost entirely
negative programme for British capitalism. Sticking to their ludicrous
deficit reduction strategy when every available indicator is sounding the

HIV Transmission As Assault - Transmitting a Sexually Transmitted Disease was an Offence until 1985
James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 5 hours ago
There has been a great deal of discussion in the media about the recent
Supreme Court of Canada cases on transmission of HIV. What almost everyone
ignores, or has forgotten, is that transmission of venereal disease (it did
not include HIV because the section in question predates HIV) was a crime
under the Criminal Code until 1985. The provision was repealed in 1985
(R.S.C. 1985, c. 27 (1st Supp.), s. 41.) by the Conservative government of
Brian Mulroney. The section repealed, and its predecessors, read:

Researchers have found what they say is the only fossil ever discovered of
a spider attack on prey caught in its web – a 100 million-year-old snapshot
of an engagement frozen in time.
The extraordinarily rare fossils are in a piece of amber that preserved
this event in remarkable detail, an action that took place in the Hukawng
Valley of Myanmar in the Early Cretaceous between 97-110 million years ago,
almost certainly with dinosaurs wandering nearby.
Aside from showing the first and only fossil evid... more »

Measuring a Black Hole
arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 9 hours ago
The real story here is that Very Long baseline Interferometry is now
viable. Thus we can target an apparent black hole and derive information.
It is hardly useful to scan the sky but certainly up to the task of
targeting an object. Distant planets are moving of course, so that may
still have to wait a while.
Yet it shows us what may be done with ground based equipment. In time we
will have a structure on the moon an d also a structure on another moon
around Mars perhaps. At the right times that would provide a baseline
almost double the radius of Mars orbit. Again the ... more »
Atomic Bond Types Discernible in Single-Molecule Images
arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 9 hours ago
This is extraordinary work. We now have a methodology to map not just the
atoms but also the nature of the bonds and likely electron locations while
we are at it. We have just gone from an idealized theoretical model to a
way more precise empirical framework in which the anticipated variations
can be actually seen. It does not get better than this in terms of
investigative chemistry. I suspect that any deeper will be meaningless.
I do not expect this to make a lot of difference in terms of work in
chemistry as the theory itself has been rather sufficient. It may open nic... more »

Let me explain all this as simply as possible. Suppose I print a hundred

me so far? Suppose you then go forth and make the world work and gather

dollars simply does not exist at all.
The point is that the production of money must be slightly greater on a

Magnets Kill Cancer Cells
arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 9 hours ago
There is a lot we do not understand in terms of cellular response to
magnetic fields let alone with iron nano particles. This needs to be
systematically studied and made over into a body of work. I get the
impression instead that what effort has gone into has often been oblique.
Yet it has been very promising.
A strong magnetic field applied across a fluid flow has been shown to
sterilize. Rather useful in spite of the reality that it has barely been
exploited. Lesser solutions retain precedence.
What we learn here is that the correct magnetic setup can hugely affect

alien dream - detachable memory modules - communication protocol

I drew this sketch of a dream I'd just had - it's rough because it was 6:01

A little explanation.
You have to understand that Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein didn't, in any
even vaguely direct sense, bring down Richard Nixon. I haven't much
mentioned press coverage of Watergate to date, and I won't much in the
future. To the extent that press coverage was important, a lot of it was
just normal reporting on public events -- indictments, trials, hearings;
the certainty that such things would be widely known constrained and
influenced actors throughout the process.
And yet, it's too strong to say that investigative reporting was entirely
irrelevant. Without... more »
