Implosion of Syria Myths a 'Nervous Breakdown' for US, Allies
* Daniel McAdams*
lewrockwell.com
October 18, 2012
The *New York Times* has finally reported what many watching the Syria
insurgency have noticed all along: US-facilitated weapons shipments are
ending up in the hands of radical jihadists. Of course while getting those
facts right, the *NYT*, blinded as it is by ideology, gets the conclusion
wrong. The Times has for some time been pushing the line that the US must
act fast militarily in Syria lest the mythical “people’s uprising” be
hikacked by radicals. In short, they have been — surprise — distorting
facts to propagandize for war.... more »
Is America Too Divided to Continue?
Being American these days is becoming something akin to sharing bathwater -
it's no fun if you know the previous occupant is too damned dumb to wipe

It was the South, today's Red States, that fought for their independence a

some Yankees coming out and saying maybe it's best for Red and Blue to part

What We're Up Against
Complicating all the problems we face in this country is a tendency among

Rule of Law 17: Justice Without Discrimination
I like this posting today in facebook by FNF Pakistan, reposting it.

These were the last written words we have received from Hasan Jafarey, who
died two days ago. He wrote his perception during our IAF Alumni Meeting in

*Why I am liberal *
Principles of liberalism pertinent to Pakistan

1. Rule of law
The most important function of the Rule of Law is to provide for justice to
all without discrimination. This is the only glue that can provide for
harmony and equality. When a sense of justice and the existence of a just

"Human Destiny: The Grace of the Present Moment"
"Human Destiny: The Grace of the Present Moment"
by Michael Dowd
"Our present situation, I think, can be summarized by the following three
sentences: 1. The glory of the human has become the desolation of the
Earth. 2. The desolation of the Earth is becoming the destiny of the human.
3. Therefore, all human activities, professions, programs and institutions
must henceforth be judged primarily by the extent to which they inhibit,
ignore or foster a mutually enhancing human/Earth relationship."- Thomas
Berry

"The Legend of the Starfish"
*"The Legend of the Starfish"*
"A vacationing businessman was walking along a beach when he saw a young
boy. Along the shore were many starfish that had been washed up by the tide
and were sure to die before the tide returned. The boy was walking slowly
along the shore and occasionally reached down and tossed the beached
starfish back into the ocean.
The businessman, hoping to teach the boy a little lesson in common sense,
walked up to the boy and said, “I have been watching what you are doing,
son. You have a good heart, and I know you mean well, but do you realize

Mitt's many binders of women
[graphic via]
By now you're aware the seminal moment of the debate was Mitt's bizarre
response to a question about equal pay for women. And of course, binders of
women became an instant meme. Within minutes, there was a facebook page
with 142K likes, a tumblr page and the phrase was trending on the twitter.
But the hiliarity shouldn't obscure the larger issues.
To the shock of no one, Mitt lied in his personal anecdote about how he was
so very concerned that no women had applied for a job with his cabinet
after he was elected governor that he immediately sent forth his menfolk to... more »

*Belgium: Exxon-Mobil Manager Shot Dead*
October 16th, 2012
Update: Better Translation
Cryptogon reader D has submitted a better English translation of the story:
Sunday night a top executive of the petro-chemical company ExxonMobil was
shot dead in the street in Neder-over-Heembeek, near Brussels. Nicholas
Mockford was shot in the head twice, when he and his wife were leaving an
Italian restaurant around 22h. Witnesses saw two men running away carrying
a motorcycle helmet.
The man died on the way to the hospital. His wife Mary was beaten and

"A Look to the Heavens"
“Far beyond the local group of galaxies lies NGC 3621, some 22 million
light-years away. Found in the multi-headed southern constellation Hydra,
the winding spiral arms of this gorgeous island universe are loaded with
luminous young star clusters and dark dust lanes.
*Click image for larger size. *
Still, for earthbound astronomers NGC 3621 is not just another pretty
face-on spiral galaxy. Some of its brighter stars have been used as
standard candles to establish important estimates of extragalactic
distances and the scale of the Universe. This beautiful image of NGC 3621

*"Wow!"*
by Chet Raymo
"Bakewell distills Montaigne's philosophy of life to this succinct
statement: "The trick is to maintain a kind of naïve amazement at each
instant of experience." Oh, she has more than that. She has her twenty
answers from Montaigne to the question "How To Live": Pay attention.
Question everything. Be convivial. Live temperately. Be ordinary and
imperfect. Don't fear death. And so on. But I'll settle for the naïve
amazement.
Nearly fifty years ago, as a young prof, I had a short column in the
college newspaper called "Under a Skeptical Star." I took the t... more »

"Life is neither good or evil, but only a place for good and evil."
- Marcus Aurelius
"Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus (26 April 121 – 17 March 180) was the
Roman emperor from 161 to his death in 180. He ruled with Lucius Verus as
co-emperor from 161 until Lucius' death in 169. He was the last of the
"Five Good Emperors", and is also considered one of the most important
Stoic philosophers. His tenure was marked by wars in Asia against a
revitalized Parthian Empire, and with Germanic tribes along the Limes

"The 12 Rules of Survival"
by Laurence Gonzales
From "Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why"
"As a journalist, I've been writing about accidents for more than thirty
years. In the last 15 or so years, I've concentrated on accidents in
outdoor recreation, in an effort to understand who lives, who dies, and
why. To my surprise, I found an eerie uniformity in the way people survive
seemingly impossible circumstances. Decades and sometimes centuries apart,
separated by culture, geography, race, language, and tradition, the most
successful survivors–those who practice what I cal... more »
