The KMT moves to protect one of its most important constituencies, the

Is Sandy a taste of things to come?
We should not be surprised. That's the view of many climate scientists as
they survey the destruction wrought by the superstorm that ravaged the
Northeast this week. The melting of Arctic ice, rising sea levels, the
warming atmosphere and changes to weather patterns are a potent combination
likely to produce storms and tidal surges of unprecedented intensity,
according to many experts.

Over 120 people trapped on remote New York island after refusing to evacuate superstorm Sandy
At
least 120 people remain trapped on Fire Island with no power and
contaminated water after ignoring the mandatory order to evacuate in the
face of Hurricane Sandy.
While there are no reports of injuries from the narrow barrier island
off
the south shore of Long Island, 12 oceanfront houses were swept away as
the
superstorm tore a swathe through New York and the East Coast.
With rescuers unable to land because the island's marinas have been

Polish military prosecutors deny explosives found on jet wreckage
Polish prosecutors denied a newspaper report that investigators found
traces of explosives on the wreckage of the government jet that crashed in
Russia two years ago, killing Poland’s president Lech Kaczynski and 95
others.
Rzeczpospolita daily said on Tuesday that Polish investigators who examined
the remains of the plane in Russia found signs of TNT and nitroglycerine on
the wings and in the cabin, including on 30 seats.

Twenty two groups call for EU ban on Israeli settler products
Twenty two religious groups and charities have called on the European Union
to ban products made by Israeli settlers in the occupied territories,
saying a boycott would undercut their economic reason for staying there.
The EU is Israel's biggest trading partner but imports 15 times more from
West Bank-based Israeli settlers than from Palestinians, a group of 22
non-governmental organisations (NGOs) said on Tuesday.

New Italy law tackles rampant corruption
Italy passed an anti-corruption law on Tuesday, the latest move by the
government of Prime Minister Mario Monti to shed the country's image
tarnished by former leader Silvio Berlusconi.
Monti, who took office last November to replace the scandal-plagued
Berlusconi, made approval of the law a confidence motion in his
administration in order to speed its passage through both houses of
parliament.

Sandy curtails nuclear plants, oldest under alert
Hurricane Sandy slowed or shut a half-dozen U.S. nuclear power plants,
while the nation's oldest facility declared a rare "alert" after the record
storm surge pushed flood waters high enough to endanger a key cooling
system.
Exelon Corp's 43-year-old Oyster Creek plant in New Jersey remains on
"alert" status, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said early
Tuesday. It is only the third time this year that the second-lowest of four
emergency action levels was triggered.

Lower Manhattan faces four days without power
Residents of lower Manhattan faced up to four days without power on Tuesday
as Consolidated Edison, New York City's power provider, scrambled to repair

plunged into darkness on Monday night after an explosion at a Con Edison

EU Budget: Cameron Faces Commons Showdown
Prime Minister David Cameron faces an embarrassing Commons defeat later
today when MPs debate the EU budget.
A rebellion is brewing on the Tory backbenches: eurosceptics want the
budget cut, while the PM plans to go no further than to demand a real-terms
freeze, an inflation-only rise of a little over 2% a year.
The budget will cover the period 2014 - 2020.

Even without a brain, a slime mold can essentially remember where it's

researchers say.
These findings reveal how ancient organisms could solve certain problems
well before complex brains evolved, scientists added.

Does Federal R&D Drive Economic Growth?

If our country is to remain strong and prosperous and a land of rewarding

Even discounting for hyperbole, does the formula "no science, no growth"
make sense? I have a new column up at The Breakthrough Institute on this
exact subject, and I argue that such arguments actually make little sense.
