CA Kicking ALEC Out 4 VOIP De-Regulation
A new poll of likely voters in California shows that voters are tired of

Alex Salmond: Enemy of Scotland
The United Kingdom was formed three centuries ago by the union of Scotland

What Mattered This Week?
I was thinking of going with Syria/Lebanon, but instead: Richard Mourdock
probably went from about a 65% chance of winning to about a 20% chance of
winning. That's a pretty big deal -- every Senate seat matters.
The final debate didn't seem to have any effect on the polls, so in that
sense it appears not to have mattered.
That's what I'll kick it off with, but what do you have? What do you think

Berlusconi Say He’s ‘Forced’ to Stay in Politics by Court Ruling
Three days after announcing that he would not seek the Italian premiership
again, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said he feels “forced” to
stay in politics after a Milan court found him guilty of tax fraud in a
television-rights trial.
“There will be consequences,” Berlusconi said today in an interview on the
news bulletin of his Mediaset Spa (MS)’s Canale 5 when asked to comment on
the verdict. “I feel forced to remain in politics to reform the justice
system, so that what happened to me will not happen to other citizens.”

Nothing much today. Too busy preparing for Frankenstorm. There’s no better
illustration of what’s broken about “horse race” campaign coverage than the
proliferation of analysis about how it might impact the Presidential race.

Working Traditional Kiln Near Mingjian, Nantou
Tripped down to Ershuei today for a round trip of 123 kms, light riding on
flat roads. Very nice time. Just north of Mingjian town I ran across this
still working traditional wood fired snake kiln, making tiles.
These kilns are always very long. The fire is at the low end. In the middle
there's a door.....
....for access.....
...to the center of the kiln....
This one actually had two snake kilns, side by side.
Must have seen better days, but it is obviously still a working kiln.

What Happened To The "Reform" Party?
The day after the Harper government announced it was limiting debate on its
second omnibus budget bill, Michael Den Tandt wrote in *The National Post*:
Conservative MPs would like to have more sway within the Harper government.
In unguarded moments some will grouse aloud (but off the record) about the
whippersnappers in the PMO, barely out of short pants. Cabinet ministers
can’t much like the fact that, through the Privy Council, this PMO wields
influence directly on the senior bureaucracy. Ministers today are spokesmen
and women for the government – not decision makers.

When Mitt Romney Became The First American Presidential Candidate To Bring Up Mali, Did He Know That Slavery Is Back?
Mali isn't a country Mitt Romney has shipped any American jobs to or hidden
any assets to avoid paying taxes. Maybe that's why he mentioned a country
three times, that almost no Americans have ever heard of, in the final
debate. At least no one would be reminded of something negative Romney had
done. I was surprised to hear him say "Mali" because it's a place I visited

"Is Demography Still Destiny?" - Annenberg Institute for School Reform
From opening summary:
"Yet a new study by the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown
University indicates that the college readiness of New York City high
school graduates is still very highly correlated with the neighborhood they
come from. In particular, the racial composition and average income of a
student’s home neighborhood are very strong predictors of a
student’s chance of graduating high school ready for college. The gaps
between neighborhoods are enormous."

Just 62 out of 11,000 foreign prisoners have been kicked out despite Cameron's pledge of crackdown
The Prime Minister promised a crackdown two years ago after it emerged that
more than 11,000 foreign inmates – one in eight prisoners – are clogging up
our jails.
Since January last year, only 62 have been sent home to serve the rest of
their sentences – 25 to just one country, the Netherlands.
Just 30 were returned in total last year – far less than the 89 in 2010 and
64 in 2009. Each inmate costs taxpayers £45,000 a year – meaning the total
bill is over £500million.

The President's kill List
What is shocking is the sheer numbers now passing over the president's
desk. There is no way he should be personally taking this responsibility to
himself. Yet just how do you establish guidelines for a duly appointed
officer to apply. It calls for judgment and it is terribly vulnerable to
error and some fussy war crime threshold.
Yet the true targets are engaged in war against us. Targeting them has done
a couple of things. It has decimated enemy leadership in a way no other war
making system has ever done. Even better, it ha hugely increased the cost
of personal involvement a... more »
Door in the Nevada Desert
Again, profoundly creditable folks who find themselves aging out will
come forward and share things. We have excellent witnesses now confirming
that alien groups are interacting with us on a secretive level. Such
activity naturally produces a small group of highly competent individuals
who are sworn to secrecy. As death approaches these individuals understand
that their knowledge will die with them and they inevitably find a trusted
person to confide in.
What is most troubling has been the obvious fact that the interaction has
been through a cut out formed decades ag... more »
MOF Production Breakthrough
There is obviously more to this story than is been reported here. It
remains a mystery as to how, but the deliverable is extremely important. I
have not included the natural gas option for automotive transportation
because of the technical problems. Those issues were manageable at the long
haul transport level but certainly not by the automobile.
This breakthrough means low pressure storage and no real containment
problems. Thus a natural gas solution is now available as fracking produces
ample energy reserves likely good through the end of this century.

Frankenstorm Arriving Next Week
This storm is serious bad news. That hurricane has a lot of heat to dump,
so snow may not be much of a problem. The problem is that the strong cold
front will dump that heat and that means unbelievable rain and the worst
floods ever. Seriously folks, if you are even slightly exposed to raging
creeks anywhere in the North East, get out of there and do not return until
the weather breaks.
The last remembered worst flood is just a hint on how bad this can become.
You will be saying wow when that dried up old creek turns into a hundred
yard wide flood plain. So yes be scared ... more »
Anniversaries: Meitner, van Vleck, Mills, Bohm
If you're a famous physicist, you should be careful today: October 27th is
a day when many famous physicists die. This very date turned out to be
fatal for Lise Meitner in 1968, John Hasbrouck van Vleck in 1980, David Bohmin 1992 (twenty years ago), and Robert
Mills in 1999.
They're known for the co-discovery of the nuclear fission; the van Vleck
transformations, determinant, paramagnetism, and other insights about
quantum mechanics applied to solids; Aharonov-Bohm effect and the revival
of the misguided pilot wave theory by Louis de Broglie; and Yang-Mills
theory, respectively.

Well, I don't know about the rest of you, much less the players, but I'm
certainly happy for the travel day today.
I can't quite get my mind around the idea that the Giants have been in the

how few teams have made it since they put in the extra round (and of course
they expanded again this year, but ignoring that):
Giants, Cardinals, Braves 3
Phillies, Fish 2
Rockies, Astros, DBacks, Mets, Padres
Yankees 7

Sunday Classics preview: Meet Tchaikovsky's Tatiana, who's going to be writing a famous letter

In early September we listened to a bunch of Tchaikovsky waltzes that
included the one embedded in the opening scene of Act II of the composer's
opera *Yevgeny Onegin*, which led to mention of the letter that young
Tatiana Larina had written to a guest at her mother's country estate,
Yevgeny Onegin, the worldly friend of her sister Olga's fiancé, Lenski. The
writing of that letter is one of opera's great scenes, and I've been

While Americans Are Sleeping On The Streets In A Crumbling USA... US Criminal Government "Extends" $4 BILLION Israel "Loan" (Free Handout) Program!
America is now definitely an empire in steep decline... Right now, there
are some 50+ Million US Citizens that are totally dependent on food stamps
just to stay alive, which is in itself outrageous! We also see a nation
now with a 25+ % unemployment rate (NOT the fraudulent "8%" that the US

The Poet: John O’Donohue, “For The Time Of Necessary Decision”

“The mind of time is hard to read.
We can never predict what it will bring,
Nor even from all that is already gone
Can we say what form it finally takes;
For time gathers its moments secretly.
Often we only know it’s time to change
When a force has built inside the heart
That leaves us uneasy as we are.
Perhaps the work we do has lost its soul
Or the love where we once belonged
Calls nothing alive in us anymore.
We drift through this gray, increasing nowhere
Until we stand before a threshold we know
We have to cross to come alive once more.

31 Days of Photo Props:Special Blankets
Lovies and blankies, there are lots of names for special blankets, each
family seems to have their own. Whatever your name for them, they are a big
part of your little one's childhood and should be documented before they
wear out.
Try and keep the poses very natural, things that they already do. My two
favorite poses for special blankets are a back shot of the child holding
the blanket over their shoulder and playing peek-a-boo with the blanket. I
also often use the blanket as a backdrop for the little one to lay against.

Chet Raymo, “Counting Out”
*“Counting Out” *
by Chet Raymo
"Remember "counting out"? Do kids still "count out"? Consider a count among
six children:

Number 4 is "out."
Back in the early 70s, Kenneth Goldstein published an ethnographic study of
counting out rhymes. By extending the rhyme, a clever counter could count
out a child other than number 4:
(5)My (6)mother (1)says (2)that (3)you (4)are (5)it.
Or further:

Red flags ignored for years at firm in meningitis crisis

In March, regulators responded to a complaint from the prestigious
