U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon's World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has received $36.7 million in Connecticut film tax credits in 20 separate deals since 2006, reports CTPost.com (thanks to Karin Richmond on the LinkedIn Public Incentives Forum). As in many states, what historically began as tax credits for motion pictures are now available for TV and online media as well, and it is in these two latter categories that the WWE received its subsidies. Also as is typical of other states, the Connecticut program has no job creation requirements, but is calculated simply as a perce... more »

The United Kingdom was formed three centuries ago by the union of Scotland with England (including Cymru and Kernow). The UK has changed since its creation, with the temporary addition of Ireland and the subsequent restoration of independence to most of that country. The relationship between England and Wales has always been one of occupier to occupied, and so the demand for transfer of powers from London to Cardiff was all but inevitable. What Mattered This Week?

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 48 minutes ago
I was thinking of going with Syria/Lebanon, but instead: Richard Mourdock probably went from about a 65% chance of winning to about a 20% chance of winning. That's a pretty big deal -- every Senate seat matters. The final debate didn't seem to have any effect on the polls, so in that sense it appears not to have mattered. That's what I'll kick it off with, but what do you have? What do you think mattered this week?

31 Days of Photo Props: Water

Debra at Housewife Eclectic - 5 hours ago
I love using water in photo shoots. It can be a a difficult element to use because you don't often get more than one shot at it. Water elements are best when done at the end of a shoot so they don't ruin the rest of your pictures with water spots on clothes. Water makes a great backdrop or foreground, even if your subjects never get in the water. I love shooting by water, using its reflective surface to capture another image of the subjects. If you have really adventurous subjects, you can have them climb straight into the water. If they are a little wary of that idea, have them... more »

Working Traditional Kiln Near Mingjian, Nantou

Michael Turton at The View from Taiwan - 6 hours ago
Tripped down to Ershuei today for a round trip of 123 kms, light riding on flat roads. Very nice time. Just north of Mingjian town I ran across this still working traditional wood fired snake kiln, making tiles. These kilns are always very long. The fire is at the low end. In the middle there's a door..... ....for access..... ...to the center of the kiln.... This one actually had two snake kilns, side by side. Must have seen better days, but it is obviously still a working kiln. _______________________ [Taiwan] Don't miss the comments below! And check out my blog and its sidebars ... more »

When Mitt Romney Became The First American Presidential Candidate To Bring Up Mali, Did He Know That Slavery Is Back?

Mali isn't a country Mitt Romney has shipped any American jobs to or hidden any assets to avoid paying taxes. Maybe that's why he mentioned a country three times, that almost no Americans have ever heard of, in the final debate. At least no one would be reminded of something negative Romney had done. I was surprised to hear him say "Mali" because it's a place I visited and a place I think needs urgent international attention. During my visit to Mali four years ago, I was shocked and horrified to find that there was still some degree of slavery there-- as well as in neighboring stat... more »

In particular, the racial composition and average income of a student’s home neighborhood are very strong predictors of a student’s chance of graduating high school ready for college. The gaps between neighborhoods are enormous."

Israel Moves To Block Trojan Computer Attack

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 11 hours ago
Israeli police officers have been banned from using memory sticks or disks in their computers and had their equipment disconnected from the internet, in a frantic bid to prevent the injection of a dangerous virus named after the country's military chief. The dramatic move last week was no great surprise. It's just another round in the cyber war which has engulfed the Middle East. http://news.sky.com/story/1003341/israel-moves-to-block-trojan-computer-attack

The President's kill List

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 12 hours ago
What is shocking is the sheer numbers now passing over the president's desk. There is no way he should be personally taking this responsibility to himself. Yet just how do you establish guidelines for a duly appointed officer to apply. It calls for judgment and it is terribly vulnerable to error and some fussy war crime threshold. Yet the true targets are engaged in war against us. Targeting them has done a couple of things. It has decimated enemy leadership in a way no other war making system has ever done. Even better, it ha hugely increased the cost of personal involvement a... more »

Again, profoundly creditable folks who find themselves aging out will come forward and share things. We have excellent witnesses now confirming that alien groups are interacting with us on a secretive level. Such activity naturally produces a small group of highly competent individuals who are sworn to secrecy. As death approaches these individuals understand that their knowledge will die with them and they inevitably find a trusted person to confide in. What is most troubling has been the obvious fact that the interaction has been through a cut out formed decades ag... more »

MOF Production Breakthrough

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 12 hours ago
There is obviously more to this story than is been reported here. It remains a mystery as to how, but the deliverable is extremely important. I have not included the natural gas option for automotive transportation because of the technical problems. Those issues were manageable at the long haul transport level but certainly not by the automobile. This breakthrough means low pressure storage and no real containment problems. Thus a natural gas solution is now available as fracking produces ample energy reserves likely good through the end of this century. The need for... more »

Frankenstorm Arriving Next Week

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 12 hours ago
This storm is serious bad news. That hurricane has a lot of heat to dump, so snow may not be much of a problem. The problem is that the strong cold front will dump that heat and that means unbelievable rain and the worst floods ever. Seriously folks, if you are even slightly exposed to raging creeks anywhere in the North East, get out of there and do not return until the weather breaks. The last remembered worst flood is just a hint on how bad this can become. You will be saying wow when that dried up old creek turns into a hundred yard wide flood plain. So yes be scared ... more »

Anniversaries: Meitner, van Vleck, Mills, Bohm

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 13 hours ago
If you're a famous physicist, you should be careful today: October 27th is a day when many famous physicists die. This very date turned out to be fatal for Lise Meitner in 1968, John Hasbrouck van Vleck in 1980, David Bohmin 1992 (twenty years ago), and Robert Mills in 1999. They're known for the co-discovery of the nuclear fission; the van Vleck transformations, determinant, paramagnetism, and other insights about quantum mechanics applied to solids; Aharonov-Bohm effect and the revival of the misguided pilot wave theory by Louis de Broglie; and Yang-Mills theory, respectively. America is now definitely an empire in steep decline... Right now, there are some 50+ Million US Citizens that are totally dependent on food stamps just to stay alive, which is in itself outrageous! 31 Days of Photo Props:Special Blankets

Lovies and blankies, there are lots of names for special blankets, each family seems to have their own. Whatever your name for them, they are a big part of your little one's childhood and should be documented before they wear out. Try and keep the poses very natural, things that they already do. My two favorite poses for special blankets are a back shot of the child holding the blanket over their shoulder and playing peek-a-boo with the blanket. I also often use the blanket as a backdrop for the little one to lay against. Not every child has a special blanket, but those who do, lo... more »
