Mitt Romney is dangerous. Barack Obama is dangerous. Neither of them want to leave you alone. Neither of them want to end needless and atrocious wars overseas. Neither of them will dare espouse an original thought. Both are pawns. Both want to use government force to their advantage.

But go on, get emotionally attached and vote for one of these stooges who couldn’t care less about you. Oh and, of course, blame those of us who resist the nonexistent urge to cast a vote for Tyrant A or Tyrant B.

From:
Maude Barlow

The Federal Court rejected the Conservative Party MPs' motions on security for costs against the ongoing legal challenges in the robocall scandal.

You'll remember the Conservative Party MPs called for the nine individual applicants to put up a total of $260,409 as a security deposit an outrageous 3620% increase above the $1,000 per application required under the Canada Elections Act. "The respondent MPs have failed to raise grounds or bring to bear evidence that would justify any further payment of security for costs, let alone in the amount requested," Madam Prothonotary Roza Aronovitch wrote in her ruling.

For the applicants and Canadians everywhere, this is tremendous news! Not only has the Federal Court rejected yet another shameful Conservative obstruction, this ruling clears the way for the cases to proceed to full hearings this December.

Think for a moment about the significance of what's been achieved here. It's because of Council of Canadians supporters like you that the applicants and their landmark legal cases will now have their day in court.

But the news isn't all rosy. Significant legal costs have depleted The Democracy 24/7 Legal Fund and an influx of new donations is needed urgently.

You have the Conservative Party MPs and their lawyers to thank for that. Months of their relentless obstructions have needlessly dragged out the process, forced the applicants to respond vigorously at every turn and driven costs up significantly. Prothonotary Aronovitch spoke to this very issue in her ruling, stating that "these motions have unnecessarily delayed and encumbered these proceedings."

Even with a legal team slashing fees and providing hours of pro bono work, these needlessly mounting costs have outstripped the generous donations people have made.

Consequently, another $240,000 must immediately be raised for the crucial next stages of the applicants' cases, including the remaining preliminary issues, preparation of documentation, the Federal Court hearings and possibly a Supreme Court appeal that could follow the decision.

We all underestimated the extreme lengths the Conservative MPs and their lawyers would go to prevent the court from examining the applicants' powerful evidence.

But they underestimate the passion with which Canadians will defend our democracy 24/7 from any attempt to undermine it.

With this firm belief in mind, today I'm proud to announce the Council of Canadians is redoubling our fundraising efforts. Our goal? To raise the $240,000 the applicants need in just eight short weeks. With the full hearings set for December 10-14, there's no time to waste.

We can do this people!

Can I count on your support with a $24, $52 or $365 contribution to The Democracy 24/7 Legal Fund right now? You can also help by telling your friends and family to chip in their donation to the Legal Fund too forward this message on to them!

It's a small price to pay to restore voters' rights and defend our democracy.

John, we're on the verge of a potential game-changing moment in our country's history. Now is when we must come together like never before.

With hope and resolve,

The surprise theory of everything
Forget quantum physics, forget relativity. Inklings of an ultimate theory might emerge from an unexpected place - find out where in this week's cover story. Also on newscientist.com this week (or right now for subscribers): the five most promising new cancer treatments; a practical travel guide for space tourists; and how lethal weapons, from the first spear to nuclear bombs, have directed the course of our cultural evolution.

You've seen straight waves coming in to shore, and circles rippling out from a stone thrown into a pond - but how would you make waves in the shape of a star? Take a tray, fill it with oil, shake, and see the results. When it comes to getting oil off waves, watch how a new technique uses a super-absorbent polymer to turn a slick into a gel that could be scooped up from the sea surface. And there's more slippery business to be seen in our Friday Illusion - a snake that appears to move though in fact it stays deathly still.

Terms of Service Explained

When you install an app, play a game, or sign up for a new account online, there's a set of conditions you agree to first known as "terms of service." These are rules that typically describe how your money or data is collected and what you can expect in return.
Because terms of service are essentially legal documents, they're not the easiest - or shortest - documents to read (but that doesn't mean you shouldn't!)
Now there's an extension in Opera that helps you understand the terms you're agreeing to. Called Terms of Service; Didn't Read, this add-on to our desktop browser provides a simple summary of any given website's terms and privacy policies, along with a rating from A to E. Here's what it looks like for the search engine DuckDuckGo:
Try it on some of the websites you use most often, and be a more informed browser.

It's one of the nastiest voter suppression schemes we've seen: This week, in Black and Latino neighborhoods in Ohio and Wisconsin, an anonymous group started running outrageous billboards that try to scare people away from voting.1
Allowing an anonymous advertiser to create an atmosphere of fear around voting just as the early voting period begins is unacceptable. Please join us in demanding that Clear Channel immediately take down these offensive and dangerous billboards (and please ask your friends and family to do the same):
These billboards are clearly designed to intimidate voters, and they're part of a coordinated right-wing attack on the voting rights of people of color. The billboards are hosted by Clear Channel, a media conglomerate owned by Bain Capital — the same company that Mitt Romney co-founded.2 Clear Channel has tried to avoid any responsibility for the ads, saying that the group who paid for them is responsible for the content. But Clear Channel has rejected billboard ads many times in the past.3,4,5
The myth of widespread "voter fraud" has been used to justify voter suppression efforts again and again. As a result, we've seen new restrictions on voting and voter registration, including discriminatory voter ID laws and voter roll purges. The fact is that voter fraud rarely occurs. In fact, voter fraud happens as infrequently as death by lightning.6
Clear Channel syndicates some of our country’s most conservative commentators like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, and now it is allowing the myth of voter fraud to intimidate Black and Latino voters. Please join us in demanding that Clear Channel immediately remove the billboards, it only takes a moment.
Thanks and Peace,
