The Debate Questions? Fair

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 35 minutes ago
There's an early consensus that, in the words of Jonathan Chait, "Obama enjoyed friendly questions from an audience that obviously leaned left" in the second debate. Naturally, conservatives agree. I thought the questions favored Obama during the debate, but a second look convinced me that it's wrong: the questions were about as fair as it gets. From the "Town Hall" audience questions, I count three that were solidly pro-Obama and one that was somewhat pro-Obama; three solidly pro-Romney and one somewhat pro-Romney; and three neutral ones. So, why the false impression? I think it wa... more »

ReGenesis With George Church

The creation of a wooly mammoth is becoming a realistic proposition and from there to enhancing a living human being or producing an enhanced human being is simply part of the same protocols. Of course the claim that we will get this done in two years appears way over optimistic, but doing it is also appearing to be a certainty. It is also true that introducing enhanced DNA into the cells of a living human being is revolutionary. Correcting errors is the easy part, but enhancing abilities is the real payoff. This is obviously very good news. We have a method that at the least halts disease progression. We swill take it. Most victims are identified fairly early on just when they begin to notice a loss of motor function somewhere on their bodies. Thus halting the progression is extremely important as it will surely limit any disability and ongoing care costs. This is now possible and I am sure that we can discover if the protocol is tolerated well pretty quickly. If so, then rapid deployment will have a huge humane incentive simply to stop further degeneration. I do get the... more »

Romney Victory Predicted

I learned a long time ago that elections can be influenced by any number of almost random story lines but that the weight of opinion will tend to dominate. It took an extraordinary effort in 2008 to elect Obama including keeping the candidate in a bubble and blocking access to plenty of unflattering information. Today he must run on his current resume and it is not compelling. It is hard to argue that he is indispensable. The weight of opinion is slightly against Obama and Romney's task has been to reassure and motivate his natural audience and this has so far succeeded... more »

Madagascar's Peopling

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 7 hours ago
We have posted on this in the past but the key take home here is that a ship load or perhaps even an expedition similar to Polynesian expeditions took off from Indonesia and went with the winds until they fetched up on Madagascar. What is noteworthy is just how small a founding group can be. It is thus easy to backtrack for the far greater occupations of continents that also likely were smallish one way trips. The real problem is just how recent that event was. Sea beds have been much lower and many more islands could have acted as stepping stones. I find it difficult to ... more »

My PP postdebate piece is about Libya, lazy mendacity, and the conservative information feedback loop. This one's for my mom, who at this moment is at home in Victoria crying after they delayed her hip-replacement surgery for two more months this morning because of her low iron count. I'm sure it seemed like a perfectly logical decision in the mind of hematologist Dr. X, who has never met my mother. And it probably made sense to Dr. Y as well, the orthopedic surgeon who has also never met my mother. Unfortunately for her, the news was completely devastating. She was supposed to be having her surgery next week, and on Sunday we'd joked about how she only had 11 more sleeps. I'm a guil... more »

How the Debates Purposely Confuse the Issues and Why Glenn Greenwald's Truths Piss Off the Left (and the Right)

Here's the real news from our "Explainer-in-Chief:" If you watched the Vice Presidential debate you may have noticed in almost awelike wonder the same phenomena I did. I saw Martha Raddatz, a well-known name in journalism, use certain phrases again and again that were demonstrably not true but that couldn't have been anything else but

Judge Bans the T-Word in 9/11 Hearing

Huffington Post Daphne Eviatar It didn't take long for the word "torture" to rear its ugly head in the September 11th terrorism case, as pre-trial hearings began today with a slew of procedural issues. Though the question of whether the five accused men have to actually show up in court every day wouldn't seem all that exciting or controversial, as soon as one of the defense lawyers started to say his client was traumatized by having been tortured at the hands of his U.S. interrogators, the judge shut him up. McGuinty's Resignation

Assuming that Dalton McGuinty doesn't have a secret, life-threatening illness, I'm going to assume that Dalton McGuinty's surprise, sudden resignation as the leader of the Ontario Liberals is rooted in frustration and petulance. McGuinty discovered that incompetent, scandal-plagued government is difficult to manage when you only have a minority government. Especially when your whole shtick as the government is to rationalize yourself with tossed-off platitudes that could have been stolen from sappy greeting cards. I once read an interview with Dalton McGuinty in the Hamilton Spect... more »

* "Parts of the One: Ants and Bees, a Metaphor"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "We can learn a lot from watching ants and bees living in community and working for the greater good. When we see ants and bees out in the world, we often see just one, but this belies the reality of their situation. More than any other species, ants and bees function as parts of a whole. They cannot and do not survive as individuals; they survive as members of a group, and the group’s survival is the implicit goal of each individual’s life. There is no concept of life outside the group, so even to us... more »

"Mundus Vult Decipi, Ergo Decipiatur..."

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 15 hours ago
"Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur," a Latin phrase, means "The world wants to be deceived, so let it be deceived." The saying is ascribed to Petronius, a Roman satirist from the first century, CE. "The pontifex maximus Scævola thought it expedient that the people should be deceived in religion; and the learned Varro said plainly, that "there are many truths, which it is useless for the vulgar to know; and many falsities which it is fit the people should not suppose are falsities." Hence comes the adage "Mundus vult decipi, decipiatur ergo."
