Mischaracterizations of the L'Aquila Lawsuit Verdict
Today in Italy 6 scientists were convicted of manslaughter in an Italian court based on their provision of allegedly faulty information. *Nature*reports : At the end of a 13-month trial, six scientists and one government official have been found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to six years in prison. The verdict was based on how they assessed and communicated risk before the earthquake that hit the city of L'Aquila on 6 April 2009, killing 309 people. There is a popular misconception in circulation that the guilty verdict was based on the scientists' failure to accurately for... more »
The Whale That Talked
The real NOC. Photo courtesy: Discover Magazine “Who told me to get out?” asked a diver, surfacing from a tank in which a whale named NOC lived. The beluga’s caretakers had heard what sounded like garbled phrases emanating from the enclosure before, and it suddenly dawned on them that the whale might be imitating the voices of his human handlers. The outbursts — described today in Current Biology and originally at a 1985 conference — began in 1984 and lasted for about four years, until NOC hit sexual maturity, says Sam Ridgway, a marine biologist at National Marine Mammal Foundatio... more »

The Philosophy of Epictetus
*Wikipedia*: Epictetus (AD 55 – AD 135) was a Greek sage and Stoic philosopher. He was born a slave at Hierapolis, Phrygia (present day Pamukkale, Turkey), and lived in Rome until his banishment, when he went to Nicopolis in northwestern Greece for the rest of his life. His teachings were written down and published by his pupil Arrian in his Discourses. Philosophy, Epictetus taught, is a way of life and not just a theoretical discipline. To Epictetus, all external events are determined by fate, and are thus beyond our control; we should accept whatever happens calmly and dispa... more »

The Obvious Way to Fix the EC Tie Problem
Necessary preface: I think it's highly unlikely that we'll get an Electoral College tie, and I don't really think it's a big deal if we do -- assuming that Republicans in the House would have the votes (which appears highly likely), they would simply announce immediately that they were voting for Mitt Romney, and everyone would agree that the election was over with Romney the winner. Recount and lawsuit issues could leave the election muddled, but a tie per se is highly unlikely to do so. At any rate: someone over the last few days was tweeting out an old blog post which argued that... more »

Italian Scientists Jailed for 6 Years In Quake Trial
Six scientists and a government official are sentenced to six years after failing to give adequate warning of an earthquake. A team of Italian scientists have been found guilty of manslaughter for failing to warn citizens of a massive earthquake in 2009. The team along with a government official were sentenced to six years in jail in a trial which has infuriated the global scientific community. Italy earthquake witch trial: 6 years in prison
A few moments ago, I randomly made a Google News search about the Italian earthquake trial that I discussed in June 2011 and September 2011. And holy cow, the verdict is just out: L'Aquila quake: Italy scientists guilty of manslaughter (BBC) That's incredible. Even a year ago when I talked about it, I still thought that the final verdict would be "innocent" – and the very fact that such a trial could have started in Italy at all looked unbelievably humiliating for the country known as Italy. Well, the verdict is "guilty". Italy has officially become a banana republic controlled by s... more »

Arlen Specter
Rich Yselson called Arlen Specter, who died last week, a "poor man's Richard Nixon." Something about Specter brought out the snark, didn't it? At least in me it did. I once said that Pennsylvania is the largest state to have never had a women represent it in the Senate, but Specter was probably willing to consider switching if it would keep him there. You would think that I would be a Specter fan; I generally like the broad category of non-ideological pragmatic careerists, which is generally the category Specter belongs to. Combined pesticide exposure severely affects individual- and colony-level traits in bees

In some cases, such as the widely reported colony collapses in North America in 2006, it is probably down to disease. But a blooming crop of research suggests that pesticides are also to blame1–3. Earlier this year, two studies published in *Science *showed that colonies are severely affected when bees are exposed to neonicotinoid pesticides of the kind commonly sprayed on crops. In ... more »

It would seem that such sentiments are de rigeur in the BBC Middle East department, and indeed beyond. I presume that is why the BBC are so keen and have spent so much licence payers money on keeping the Balen Report secret.

Psychological harm and forfeiture under the Criminal Code
R. v. Atherton, 2012 ABCA 305 holds that the exclusion from the forfeiture provisions of the Criminal Code does not extend to a loss of self esteem. One might ask if this ruling extends to all psychological harm from forfeiture -- say the harm caused by losing something of great sentimental value? The Court writes: [6] The other arm of his forfeiture appeal has to do with the loss of self-esteem which forfeiture will bring. Given his history, that may well be the fact. 163million Americans will get a tax rise next year REGARDLESS of who wins election
A temporary reduction in Social Security payroll taxes is due to expire at the end of the year and hardly anyone in Washington is pushing to extend it. Neither Obama nor Romney has proposed an extension, and it probably wouldn't get through Congress anyway, with lawmakers in both parties down on the idea. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2221228/Revealed-How-163million-Americans-tax-rise-year-REGARDLESS-wins-election.html

Google Law: Google threatens to ban French newspapers if country makes it pay for online content

FBI creating terrorism plots to scare Americans

Buried beneath the headlines and opening paragraphs of the major news outlet reports, however, is the fact that Nafis would have been unable to execute his plot without substantial assistance from the F.B.I.. RIP, George McGovern: 1922-2012
He had a reputation for being a daredevil bomber pilot during World War II, which seems strange for the quintessential "peace" candidate. I suppose that shouldn't be surprising. Almost everybody was for the defeat of Hitler, the Nazis, etc., during the "good" war. I still wonder whether I would have voted for him for president in 1972, had I been eligible then and even had the views I have now. Nixon was too crazy to support, so I may have just stayed home or thrown my vote away on a fringe-party candidate. I might have voted for George, considering that it was apparent early that ... more »

Schadenfreude

The news that the BBC news department is in apparent turmoil gave me some pleasure but then I read that the BBC foreign correspondent John Simpson has said: "This is the worst crisis that I can remember in my nearly 50 years at the BBC. Stink Bug Issues
From the second article we discover that an alien species of stink bug has been running amok and damaging crops way more than expected. It gives us an opportunity to catch up on the biology of a pest any farmer knows and generally ignores. This option has presently disappeared although it likely succumbs well enough to early timed pesticide applications. The organic farmer will not be so lucky. It is also good to know that a wasp solution is available for the alien and plausibly through future work this method can be expanded. In fact, it is almost time to use genetic en... more »

The location and the weight comparison assures us that no hoax is possible. This is a very good track... more »
SpaceX Designing Massive New Engine
I think that SpaceX has pretty well proven that tghey can deliver and yes it is time to have the big engines. We do have to lift a two container load of goods into space as often as possible. That way the engines could hit full thrust and initial ... more »
Obama's Foreign Policy Gap with Lawrence Solomon
What this article makes abundantly clear is the sparseness of Obama’s foreign policy record itself. What was presented was another round of the old appeasement argument which generated the usual worsening environment in exchange for ‘peace’ in Obama’s time. I question Mr Obama’s historical perspective since the last time around it cost the lives of twenty million Russian Socialists. On a more positive note, old age appears to be sorting things out in North Korea, Burma and even China without much nastiness so far. More troublesome, the Arab Spring, which was inevitabl... more »
