The real NOC. Photo courtesy: Discover Magazine “Who told me to get out?” asked a diver, surfacing from a tank in which a whale named NOC lived. The beluga’s caretakers had heard what sounded like garbled phrases emanating from the enclosure before, and it suddenly dawned on them that the whale might be imitating the voices of his human handlers. The outbursts — described today in Current Biology and originally at a 1985 conference — began in 1984 and lasted for about four years, until NOC hit sexual maturity, says Sam Ridgway, a marine biologist at National Marine Mammal Foundatio... more »

Necessary preface: I think it's highly unlikely that we'll get an Electoral College tie, and I don't really think it's a big deal if we do -- assuming that Republicans in the House would have the votes (which appears highly likely), they would simply announce immediately that they were voting for Mitt Romney, and everyone would agree that the election was over with Romney the winner. There is no such thing as coincidence, right? Sitting here in Oregon, I wrote a story about a guy in New Jersey, sent it to a site in England, where it was read by a guy in Greece, who pointed me to a story from South Africa, about a man I’d never heard of: Adrian Boshier (1939-1978). His life was described in *Lightning Bird*, a biography by Lyall Watson (1939-2008). Watson was the inventor of “the hundredth monkey,” a magical thinking meme that once went viral. The book was just what I needed: a visit to an old-fashioned society. Boshier was an Englishman who moved to South Afr... more »

Residents of a Japanese island on which a woman was allegedly raped by two US servicemen have spoken of their "overwhelming indignation". A resolution passed by local politicians on Okinawa condemned foreign military leaders who, they claimed, are not doing enough to control the thousands of personnel based there. "Yet another incident has taken place. In fact, the severity of the incidents is intensifying," they said. http://news.sky.com/story/1000936/okinawa-anger-over-us-sailors-rape-case

As you may have heard, the ship *The Estelle*, sailing in international waters, was illegally boarded by the Israeli navy, and its occupants taken into custody. Among those being held are Jim Manley, a Canadian, and a former New Democrat MP. *The Estelle* is part of the Freedom Flotilla movement, which seeks to draw attention to the illegal blockade of Gaza, to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine, and to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza. BBC Middle East specialists past and present

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 10 hours ago
My views about the BBC's Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen are well documented. I think it fairly clear that he is biased against Israel. So I was intrigued to read Richard Millett's piece that reports the anti-Israel and worse sentiments of former BBC Middle East correspondent Tim Llewellyn. It would seem that such sentiments are de rigeur in the BBC Middle East department, and indeed beyond. I presume that is why the BBC are so keen and have spent so much licence payers money on keeping the Balen Report secret.

Willard Mitt Romney-- Is There Anything There? Anything At All?

When President Obama looked into the camera during the last debate and told the viewers that Romney doesn't have a 5-point plan, just a 1-point plan (to represent the interests of the 1%), it was one of the truest-- and most effective-- things he said all night. With all the flips and all the flops, serving his own class has always been the North Star of the S.S. Willard. George McGovern

How do you take the measure of a man's life? By the standard usually applied to George McGovern, he was one of America's biggest losers. After all, in 1972, he lost 49 of 50 states. But, when I was finishing a masters degree at the University of North Carolina in the summer of 1974 -- when Richard Nixon resigned the presidency -- I began each day passing by a car which bore Massachusetts plates and a bumper sticker which read, "Don't Blame Me." It seems to me that the real losers of the 1972 election were the American people. It wasn't that McGovern didn't make mistakes. After ... more »

Psychological harm and forfeiture under the Criminal Code

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 10 hours ago
R. v. Atherton, 2012 ABCA 305 holds that the exclusion from the forfeiture provisions of the Criminal Code does not extend to a loss of self esteem. One might ask if this ruling extends to all psychological harm from forfeiture -- say the harm caused by losing something of great sentimental value? The Court writes: [6] The other arm of his forfeiture appeal has to do with the loss of self-esteem which forfeiture will bring. Given his history, that may well be the fact. But we doubt that that subjective reaction is the sort of disproportionate impact of which Parliament speaks. In a... more »
