Berlusconi party loses key Sicily vote
Italian ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom party (PDL) on
Monday lost a key regional election in Sicily seen as a barometer for
national polls due in April, handing victory to a centre-left anti-Mafia
candidate.
With over 50 percent of votes counted, Rosario Crocetta of the Democratic
Party (PD) was leading with 30.88 percent, ahead of the PDL's Sebastiano
Musumeci with 24.90 percent, robbing him of what was once the

Sandy likely to shut at least two NJ nuclear reactors
At least two major New Jersey nuclear power plants are likely to shut on
Monday as Hurricane Sandy makes landfall as a Category 1 storm, and more
plants could reduce power as the storm triggers precautionary safety
measures.
Sandy, centered over the Atlantic Ocean about 310 miles southeast of New
York City, was expected to hit near Delaware and south New Jersey in about

Another Senate Update
Oh, why not? If you ask me, the Senate races are one of the biggest
underappreciated stories of this election cycle, and so even though I
posted about it back on Thursday, I'm doing an update now.
The story then was that the Republicans had solid leads in states that
would give them 43 seats; Democrats had leads that would give them 46.
Seats. Of the remaining 11, five leaned to the Democrats, two were tossups

An ex-detective who failed to investigate sex attacks and faked records to
cover his tracks is sent to prison.
Ryan Coleman-Farrow, 30, was sentenced for a string of failures linked to

One thing that grates on plenty of British Columbians is that Canada has
two Alberta governments, one too many. We have a provincial Alberta
government that sits in Edmonton and a federal Alberta government that sits

Iran naval task force 'docks in Sudan'
An Iranian naval task force has docked in Sudan, carrying with it a
"message of peace and security to neighbouring countries", Iranian state
media report.
The vessels, which include a corvette and freighter, set sail from Iran
last month, the Irna news agency said.
Their arrival comes six days after explosions destroyed an arms factory in
the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.
Sudan has complained to the UN that Israel bombed the factory, which is
believed to have been operated by Iran.

Sandy strengthens as it nears East Coast; Wall Street shut

Pierre Barnes, 12, Missing On French Island
Twelve-year-old Pierre Barnes vanished on Saturday after going for a bike
ride on the island of Porquerolles, near Toulon on the Mediterranean coast.

New York has called up 1,000 extra troops from the National Guard as
"superstorm" Hurricane Sandy bears down on the city.
Heavy rain and strong winds have started lashing the northeast of the US,

Well, blogging has been light because Southern Man has kept busy. Also, the
lack of internet out at The Land does put a damper on things as well.
Now that it is late fall Southern Man's routine is get up (in the dark),
have breakfast, go to the gym to work out and shower, and go to work. On
the days he teaches evenings he does his evening work and then goes home
(in the dark) and relaxes for a bit and goes to bed. On the days that he *

A Sky News team were among journalists who were "violently" stopped from
reporting on an environmental pollution protest in China.
Sky News cameraman Andy Portch was attacked by plain-clothed men as they

New York Braces For Wall Of Water
Strong winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Sandy have started lashing the
northeast of the US, as forecasters warn New York could bear the brunt of
the one-of-a-kind superstorm.
Sandy is on a collision course with two other weather systems leading to

Swarm of bees attacks mother and six children, Las Vegas
According to the Clark County Fire Department, fire crews responded to the
bee attack at the intersection of Marion Drive and Alto Avenue.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a mother and six children suffering from
multiple bee stings - the youngest being 18 months old. One family member
suffered more than one dozen stings. The father was unharmed.

Slovenia shuts nuclear plant after Sava river swells
Slovenia preventively shut down production Sunday at its only nuclear power
plant after a steep increase in the flow of the Sava river used for cooling
the system, the Krsko nuclear plant said in a statement.
The plant's production was stopped manually due to the "great amount of

HMS Bounty: Crew Abandon Ship Near Eye Of Hurricane
The captain of HMS Bounty ordered all members to abandon ship after it lost
power and the pumps were unable to keep up with the dewatering.
"The 17 person crew donned cold water survival suits and life-jackets
before launching in two 25-man lifeboats with canopies," said the US
Coastguard.
The first rescue helicopter has reached the ship and is in the process of
rescuing the crew, said HMS Bounty on their website.

Palestinian prisoners are handed millions in British aid with some being paid more than average UK worker
British aid money is helping to pay ‘salaries’ to Palestinian prisoners –
some of them convicted terrorists – serving time in Israeli jails,
according to a report.
The Palestinian Authority is paying them up to £1,957 a month – more than
the average salary of a UK worker.
The Department for International Development spends around £80million a
year in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, of which around £30million

The euro fell on Monday, hurt by uncertainty over whether Greece can agree

3.6 million Taxpayers Social Security numbers and 387,000 credit and debit card numbers exposed in cyber attack on South Carolina agency
The vast majority of the credit card numbers used by South Carolina
taxpayers were encrypted, but about 16,000 were not, meaning the data was
fully exposed, state police said.
None of the Social Security numbers were encrypted, said State Law
Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry.
Berry said the hacker used a foreign Internet Protocol (IP) address to gain
access to the data.

Cyprus police say foil murder bid on island's top prosecutor
Acting on a tip-off, authorities on the east Mediterranean island
discovered an anti-tank missile, explosives and detonators in a basement on

The entire New York transport system shuts down, with airports closed, as
the region prepares for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy.
Authorities have ordered the evacuation of 375,000 people on the east coast
of the United States ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Sandy.
New York mayor Michael Bloomberg launched the mandatory evacuation and said
72 centres had been set up around the city in schools and community

The debate over affordable housing is already being framed as a debate
between “sprawl” and “intensification”—a debate between those who wish to
release (just a little) the planners’ ring-fences around NZ’s major cities
to allow new homes on “greenfield” sections, versus those who insist we
build with more intensity within the ring fence on so called “brownfield”
sites.
The latter group characterise the former as being in favour of “sprawl”;

the Jubilee Jailbirds.
