Gordon's paper has been much discussed in the pages and blogs of the *New York Times*, *Washington Post*, *Financial Times* and elsewhere. Remarkably, the wide-ranging discussion took place with no one figuring out that Gordon's claims are in error and based on a selective and non-representative parsing of the data. Earlier this month I had an opportunity to see a part of the province I've only traveled to once before a number of years ago. I paid a long overdue visit to a friend of mine in Grande Prairie. I had only ever been to the northeastern part of Alberta once before and that was a dozen years ago and mostly in darkness as I was took an epic bus trip from Edmonton up to Fort Smith, NT where I was living at the time. Last week however, was my first visit to Grande Prairie itself. Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie are northern cousins in a way, being Alberta's two largest northern centres.... more »

*de·moc·ra·cy * noun, plural de·moc·ra·cies. government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the *people* and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a* free* electoral system. I am sure Greece and Italy would have a problem agreeing with this statement, seeing they both had their prime ministers and governments replaced by Un-elected Technocrats from Europe.

Eponyms everywhere! Who knew? Our most recent list of eponyms was a smash success. It gave rise to at least three subcategories, as I wrote here: - Inventor/creator/discoverer, not genericized. These are eponyms, but have not entered the vocabulary as a separate noun or descriptor. Example: Alzheimer's. Compare to pasteurized. - Fictional characters --- Mythological names ----- Biblical names This list is more specific, and more difficult. Allan and I have done this one before, and even with help from a well-read listserv, came up with only a handful. (Idea for new reality show: A... more »

Julian Assange show Coming to an End?

In a message posted on Pastebin, @AnonymousIRC blasted Assange: …Wikileaks is not — or should not be — about Julian Assange alone. The idea behind Wikileaks was to provide the public with information that would otherwise being kept secret by industries and governments. Information we strongly believe the public has a right to know. But this has been pushed more and more into the background, instead we only hear about Julian Assange, like he had dinner last night with Lady Gaga. That’s great for him but not much of our interest. *Ignorance, terror, and fear abound in the Public Fool System...* Heather Callaghan Having worked in a school system, there is an inordinate pressure to see terrorism and drugs behind every tray and box, at least in some districts, and a civic duty to act like a surrogate cop, confiscate and report such acts of terror to the proper authorities. This is so unfortunate because school staff can be some of the kindest, most giving people you've ever met; but the pressure and fear comes from on high. Pink slime is a meat filler made from "ammoniated boneless lean beef trimmings or similar products, which are considered unfit for human consumption until ammonia has been added.” In early March, it was reported by ABC that a shocking 70% of ground beef at supermarkets contained this pink slime. Basically, a glue is used to piece together scraps of meat to sell as a whole cut. The glue lines are invisible to the naked eye. It looks like New Hampshire voters snapped out of it and realize what a dreadful mistake they made in 2010. The state legislature is likely to flip back to Democratic control and things like good for both Ann Kuster and Carol. Although a poll f... more »

Peace Prize for Those who Declared War on Iran

Intercept at The Intercept - 16 hours ago
Iran Review *Kourosh Ziabari* Nobel Prize is the most prestigious honor which one may be awarded in his lifetime. The legacy of Alfred Nobel is so matchless and incomparable that more than one century after the first Nobel Prize was awarded, it is still the most exalted and esteemed prize that can be conferred to people who work for the promotion and advancement of sciences and global peace. Many people live their entire life with the dream of winning a Nobel Prize, without revealing this sealed aspiration to anyone. Chemists, physicists, medics, economists, authors, poets and act... more »

I spent the day trolling around the internet, and reading articles posted in real truth seeker sites. I especially concentrate on articles posted by those who I consider close friends of mine...It has always been important for all of us to share any important information so that EVERYONE gets the messages! It comes from my friend, John Friend, who writes the fabulous blog: John Friend's Blog, at www.johnfriendsblog.blogspot.com. Great Video Showing Albert Einstein For The FRAUD He Truly Was!

Northerntruthseeker at Northerntruthseeker - 17 hours ago
In all my years in the false education system including University and College, I was led to believe much like almost everyone else, that Albert Einstein was the "Greatest" scientist that the world has ever known. We all have been brainwashed over the years with the firm belief that Albert Einstein gave us the great gifts of his "Theory Of Relativity", and of course his "E = M x C squared" computation for conversion of matter into energy. But after years of research, I can tell everyone that Albert Einstein was a fraud. The man was a Patent clerk that stole most of his so calle... more »

“Spiky stars and spooky shapes abound in this deep cosmic skyscape. Its well-composed field of view covers about 2 Full Moons on the sky toward the constellation Pegasus. Of course the brighter stars show diffraction spikes, the commonly seen effect of internal supports in reflecting telescopes, and lie well within our own Milky Way galaxy. *Click image for larger size.* The faint but pervasive clouds of interstellar dust ride above the galactic plane and dimly reflect the Milky Way's combined starlight. Welfarism 23: CCT, 4Ps and Central Planning

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 18 hours ago
More government central planning, more wastes and inefficiencies. This is once more exhibited in the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) or Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) program of the government. My economist friend from UP, Jhiedon Florentino, rode a taxi and engaged the taxi driver to a fruitful conversation. Well, it’s more of probing the mind of one of the average persons in this country on what they think of certain government policies like the CCT. Jhie is down to earth enough to listen to the man’s frank ideas and witty remarks. Then he posted their conversation in... more »

“Project Cloverleaf: Ex-Government Employee Talks About Chemtrails”

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 18 hours ago
*“Project Cloverleaf: * *Ex-Government Employee Talks About Chemtrails”* by Michael Vincent Anthony "The chemtrail program is also known as “Project Cloverleaf”, and it is very compartmentalized. Even the pilots themselves have no real idea of why they are actually spraying. Chemtrails are a sub-program of the US Navy’s Radio Frequency Mission Planner (RFMP) program called the Variable Terrain Radio Parabolic Equation (VTRPE) – a system for creating 3D battlefield imaging that the US military has been using in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some of the chemtrail contents are biological ... more »

Chet Raymo, “Facing Backwards”

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 18 hours ago
*“Facing Backwards”* by Chet Raymo “Perhaps the greatest problem facing the world today is the disparity of power between rich and poor. Technology (satellite television, the internet, easy international travel) keeps the disparity at front of mind for the oppressed. They turn first of all to religion as an anodyne. After all, what is more empowering than to have God on one's side, and what is more consoling than the promise of paradise while the oppressor burns in hell. There is no shortage of mullahs, preachers, and gurus with agendas of their own ready to whip believers into ... more »

"Why Are Americans So Easy to Manipulate and Control?"

*"Why Are Americans So Easy to Manipulate and Control?" * by Bruce E. Levine "What a fascinating thing! Total control of a living organism!" - psychologist B.F. Skinner "The corporatization of society requires a population that accepts control by authorities, and so when psychologists and psychiatrists began providing techniques that could control people, the corporatocracy embraced mental health professionals. In psychologist B.F. Skinner’s best-selling book "Beyond Freedom and Dignity" (1971), he argued that freedom and dignity are illusions that hinder the science of ... more »

Frontiers of shamelessness: Chuck Lorre hawks his book-form collection of his vanity cards

KenInNY at DownWithTyranny! - 19 hours ago
*You know the old saying, "Shameless is as shameless does." Okay, maybe it's not an old saying, and maybe I'm not even sure what it would mean if it were. But somehow it seems pertinent to Chuck Lorre's collection of his celebrated end-of-show vanity cards -- with, he promises, some new material added.* *by Ken* So here I was just this week bragging about how I was on top of my new-season televiewing. It shouldn't be that tough, really, since it's pretty much all old and returning shows. (I'm casting a wary eye on CBS's * Partners*, though I missed the pilot, and the show is appare... more »

For whom the dog whistle blows

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 19 hours ago
Granted this is one guy with a hideously racist tshirt at one Romney rally and the campaign quietly denounced the shirt, but it's not as if Team Romney hasn't been encouraging this sort of thing right along. Blow that dog whistle at the decibel level of an air raid siren and all the vicious dogs come out. This is not at all an isolated incident. There's been hundreds of instances of this sort all over the country. And then there's the countless local Republican politicians and operatives "accidentally" sending racist emails and making racist "jokes" (and they're very sorry if anyo... more »

Teen suicide rate drops overall but rises for girls

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 20 hours ago
Overall the rate of teen suicide has dropped over time and fairly significantly. But since teenage boys commit suicide at a far greater rate than girls a significant drop in boys killing themselves swamps a statistically significant increase in girls killing themselves. None of this is to trivialize any suicide but rather to note the problem is complex and what works for one group may not work for another. The rate, for example, is much higher in some groups and some regions than others. Overall for all ages and subgroups the rate seems fairly constant in Canada around 11 in 1... more »
