Gordon vs. Gordon on Growth
This post is a follow up to the discussion on this blog a few weeks ago of
economist Robert Gordon's provocative paper which asked, "Is US economic
growth over?". Gordon's paper has been much discussed in the pages and
blogs of the *New York Times*, *Washington Post*, *Financial Times* and
elsewhere. Remarkably, the wide-ranging discussion took place with no one
figuring out that Gordon's claims are in error and based on a selective and
non-representative parsing of the data. (The FT did publish a letter of
mine, however.)
Let's review. Gordon claims that US per capita economic gr... more »

Like the autumn leaves, the myths about the F-35 stealth light bomber are

As Travis Sharp, an analyst with the Centre for a New American Security

going toward things our adversaries want us to invest in, because they can
neutralize them - and spend far less money to do so*."
The thing is, there's never been a warplane quite like the F-35. Its

It appears that Barack Obama is ready to let Secretary of State Clinton

agenda was.
There is no doubt that is part of her responsibility in that role. According

government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power
is vested in the *people* and exercised directly by them or by their

I am sure Greece and Italy would have a problem agreeing with this
statement, seeing they both had their prime ministers and governments
replaced by Un-elected Technocrats from Europe.
we like lists: list # 19: more eponyms, subcategory edition
Eponyms everywhere! Who knew?
Our most recent list of eponyms was a smash success. It gave rise to at
least three subcategories, as I wrote here:
- Inventor/creator/discoverer, not genericized. These are eponyms, but have
not entered the vocabulary as a separate noun or descriptor. Example:
Alzheimer's. Compare to pasteurized.
- Fictional characters
--- Mythological names
----- Biblical names
This list is more specific, and more difficult. Allan and I have done this
one before, and even with help from a well-read listserv, came up with only
a handful. (Idea for new reality show: A... more »

Kid Suspended, Interrogated by Cop For Healthy Kombucha Drink In Lunch Box
*Ignorance, terror, and fear abound in the Public Fool System...*
Heather Callaghan
Having worked in a school system, there is an inordinate pressure to see
terrorism and drugs behind every tray and box, at least in some districts,
and a civic duty to act like a surrogate cop, confiscate and report such
acts of terror to the proper authorities. This is so unfortunate because
school staff can be some of the kindest, most giving people you've ever

Activist Outrage Causes Major Supermarkets to Drop 'Pink Slime' Meat

We have been reporting on the staggering amount of "pink slime" used in the
U.S. food industry over the last few months. Pink slime is a meat filler
made from "ammoniated boneless lean beef trimmings or similar products,
which are considered unfit for human consumption until ammonia has been
added.”
In early March, it was reported by ABC that a shocking 70% of ground beef
at supermarkets contained this pink slime. Since this disgusting food

My meat contains what? Why didn't I know? More than likely, we have all
consumed a substance known as Transglutaminase (TG) from delis and

Basically, a glue is used to piece together scraps of meat to sell as a
whole cut. The glue lines are invisible to the naked eye.
Stories about glue in our meat are cropping up everywhere causing great
dismay. If there was ever a time that people should shout "Franken" in

Einstein gave us the great gifts of his "Theory Of Relativity", and of
course his "E = M x C squared" computation for conversion of matter into
energy.
But after years of research, I can tell everyone that Albert Einstein was a
fraud. The man was a Patent clerk that stole most of his so calle... more »

well-composed field of view covers about 2 Full Moons on the sky toward the

telescopes, and lie well within our own Milky Way galaxy.

Welfarism 23: CCT, 4Ps and Central Planning
More government central planning, more wastes and inefficiencies. This is
once more exhibited in the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) or Pantawid
Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) program of the government.
My economist friend from UP, Jhiedon Florentino, rode a taxi and engaged
the taxi driver to a fruitful conversation. Well, it’s more of probing the
mind of one of the average persons in this country on what they think of
certain government policies like the CCT. Jhie is down to earth enough to
listen to the man’s frank ideas and witty remarks. Then he posted their
conversation in... more »

*Ex-Government Employee Talks About Chemtrails”*
by Michael Vincent Anthony
"The chemtrail program is also known as “Project Cloverleaf”, and it is
very compartmentalized. Even the pilots themselves have no real idea of why
they are actually spraying. Chemtrails are a sub-program of the US Navy’s
Radio Frequency Mission Planner (RFMP) program called the Variable Terrain
Radio Parabolic Equation (VTRPE) – a system for creating 3D battlefield
imaging that the US military has been using in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some
of the chemtrail contents are biological ... more »
Global warming stopped 16 years ago, reveals Met Office report quietly released... and here is the chart to prove it
Daily Mail
- The figures reveal that from the beginning of 1997 until August 2012
there was no discernible rise in aggregate global temperatures
- This means that the ‘pause’ in global warming has now lasted for about
the same time as the previous period when temperatures rose, 1980 to 1996
The world stopped getting warmer almost 16 years ago, according to new data
released last week.
The figures, which have triggered debate among climate scientists, reveal
that from the beginning of 1997 until August 2012, there was no discernible
rise in aggregate global temperatur... more »
Chet Raymo, “Facing Backwards”
*“Facing Backwards”*
by Chet Raymo
“Perhaps the greatest problem facing the world today is the disparity of
power between rich and poor. Technology (satellite television, the
internet, easy international travel) keeps the disparity at front of mind
for the oppressed. They turn first of all to religion as an anodyne. After
all, what is more empowering than to have God on one's side, and what is
more consoling than the promise of paradise while the oppressor burns in
hell. There is no shortage of mullahs, preachers, and gurus with agendas of
their own ready to whip believers into ... more »

"What a fascinating thing! Total control of a living organism!"
- psychologist B.F. Skinner
"The corporatization of society requires a population that accepts control
by authorities, and so when psychologists and psychiatrists began providing
techniques that could control people, the corporatocracy embraced mental
health professionals. In psychologist B.F. Skinner’s best-selling book
"Beyond Freedom and Dignity" (1971), he argued that freedom and dignity
are illusions that hinder the science of ... more »

You appeared with a tense, distended, and painful abdomen. For four days
you hadn’t been able to relieve yourself nor even sleep due to horrible
visceral pain that distended lumens cause. *

Your eyes searched our eyes. You looked but we couldn’t. *

**"State says chemist at drug lab imperiled evidence" by Milton J. Valencia
| Globe Staff, August 30, 2012*
A chemist at a state drug-testing laboratory is accused of circumventing
standard procedures in the handling of drug evidence, lapses that could
jeopardize thousands of drug prosecutions and convictions in Massachusetts
over the past several years, the head of the State Police said Thursday.
State Police Colonel Timothy P. Alben said the Hinton State Laboratory
Institute in Jamaica Plain, which had conducted about half of the state’s

Frontiers of shamelessness: Chuck Lorre hawks his book-form collection of his vanity cards
*You know the old saying, "Shameless is as shameless does." Okay, maybe
it's not an old saying, and maybe I'm not even sure what it would mean if
it were. But somehow it seems pertinent to Chuck Lorre's collection of his
celebrated end-of-show vanity cards -- with, he promises, some new material
added.*

For whom the dog whistle blows
Granted this is one guy with a hideously racist tshirt at one Romney rally
and the campaign quietly denounced the shirt, but it's not as if Team
Romney hasn't been encouraging this sort of thing right along. Blow that
dog whistle at the decibel level of an air raid siren and all the vicious
dogs come out.
This is not at all an isolated incident. There's been hundreds of
instances of this sort all over the country. And then there's the countless
local Republican politicians and operatives "accidentally" sending racist
emails and making racist "jokes" (and they're very sorry if anyo... more »

Trouble in Catalonia
Much of Spain was ruled by Muslim conquerors from 711 and 1492, and
Salafists believe that the territories the Muslims lost during the Spanish
Reconquista
still belong to them, and that they have a right to return and establish
their rule there.

Teen suicide rate drops overall but rises for girls
Overall the rate of teen suicide has dropped over time and fairly
significantly. But since teenage boys commit suicide at a far greater rate
than girls a significant drop in boys killing themselves swamps a
statistically significant increase in girls killing themselves. None of
this is to trivialize any suicide but rather to note the problem is complex
and what works for one group may not work for another. The rate, for
example, is much higher in some groups and some regions than others.
Overall for all ages and subgroups the rate seems fairly constant in Canada
around 11 in 1... more »
