Marcus Aurelius - The Philosopher King

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 22 minutes ago
*Wikipedia: * Marcus Aurelius (April 26, 121 CE. – March 17, 180 CE.), was Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 CE. He ruled with Lucius Verus as co-emperor from 161 until Verus' death in 169. He was the last of the "Five Good Emperors", and is also considered one of the most important members of the Stoic philosophers. During his reign, the Empire defeated a revitalized Parthian Empire; Aurelius' general Avidius Cassius sacked the capital Ctesiphon in 164. Aurelius fought the Marcomanni, Quadi, and Sarmatians with success during the Marcomannic Wars, but the threat of the Germanic tribe... more »

I feel sleepy today. So I'll just link to two books that I'm reading. Brian Greene's *The Elegant Universe*. It was on sale at a reduced price. It's from 2003, before the Large Hadron Collider, so there you go. Some of the ideas about String Theory were good. It's a very good intro to theoretical physics for cretins such as myself. But towards the middle, it began to be a defense of string theory against some rather esoteric challenges that were met with equally esoteric counter-arguments. There was a part where advanced string theory ideas were used to solve very high-level mathem... more »

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 6 hours ago
Last week we saw how West Virginia's most notoriously reactionary coal baron, Bob Murray, was illegally pressuring employees to write checks for his pet congressman, anti-environment fanatic David McKinley. He has been forcing-- by way of threats to employment and bonus considerations-- his staff to contribute 1% of their pay to back right-wing candidates. Campaign finance watchdogs in West Virginia say the charges against Murray are particularly important because of his history. Julie Archer is project manager for the West Virginia Citizen Action Group. She says Murray uses hi... more »

We can be optimistic and it is also likely something we already know a lot about. Blood chemistry declines with age and we know that. Just restoring what we know may just be good enough. The shoemaker listened calmly to the complaint and apologized, promising to correct the error. Jean and his grandfather stopped to have coffee at a bistro. At the table next to them, the waiter asked a man to move his chair a little in order to make space. That man burst into a torrent of complaints and refused to move. “Never forget what you have seen today,”... more »

11 Reasons To Get Your Kids Out Of The Government Schools

Mark Daniels at Global Political Awakening - 17 hours ago
Michael Snyder, *Contributing Writer* It should be painfully obvious to everyone by now that it is time to get all of our kids out of the government schools. The public school system in the United States has been dramatically declining for a long time, and in most areas of the country the public schools are open sewers at this point. Yes, there are some U.S. public schools that are still very good and that do a decent job of preparing our young people for their adult lives. But those good schools are the exception to the rule. Hopefully the school shooting that just happened ... more »

8 Reasons to Say NO to College

Mark Daniels at Global Political Awakening - 17 hours ago
Bohemian Mom You may already be wondering, “what parent in their right mind would not want their kids to go to college?” I half expect the Child Protective Services to beat down my door just for writing this. It was not that long ago that I myself would have shunned this article, and concluded that its author is an unfit parent. But a measured look at the reasons why college may not be the best choice reveals another side of the story that most parents aren't usually exposed to. I must state upfront that if our children desire a profession that requires college, of course we... more »

*“Matters of Life and Death” * by Chet Raymo “For the past few days I've have passed this poor bedraggled creature on the sidewalk. I cannot help but think of that essay in Lewis Thomas' "The Lives of a Cell" called "Death In the Open." How rare it is, he writes, to see a dead wild animal. He mentions squirrels in particular. They teem in his backyard, he says, all year long, but he has never seen, anywhere, a dead squirrel. "It is always a queer shock, part a sudden upwelling of grief, part unaccountable amazement. It is simply astounding to see a dead animal on the highway... more »

Roswell Minutia - Negative Investigation

KRandle at A Different Perspective - 17 hours ago
As the Roswell investigation spreads, we come upon some strange information. I was told, not all that long ago, that the negatives of Ramey, Ramey and DuBose, and Jesse Marcel, in the Special Collections at the University of Texas – Arlington, had been sold. It was suggested that someone at Microsoft had bought the negatives but to make it worse, those negatives were now gone. They had been lost. This was big news because it is on one of the negatives of Ramey and DuBose that the message clutched in Ramey’s hand could be seen and partially read. Over the years, as technology improv... more »

Apologies if you've already encountered the Owl Jolson Story. It's still the best story I can offer tonight

KenInNY at DownWithTyranny! - 18 hours ago
*It turns out that the little owl dubbed Owl Jolson isn't a youngster but a saw-whet, a species of owl "that only grows to a height of 7 or 8 inches and to a weight of about 3 ounces."* *by Ken* It turns out that I don't even have to explain why I'm offering this story, even though I'm coming late to it, of an owl-in-a-shoebox turned in at the NYC Parks Department's HQ in the Arsenal in Central Park. For once it's not only safe but gratifying to venture into the comments sections, and here's a comment that explains as well as I could why I'd rather spotlight this story tonight tha... more »

Nima Shirazi at Wide Asleep in America - 19 hours ago
Last week, I was interviewed by Russia Today reporter Ramon Galindo for a short piece on how Hollywood depicts foreigners and serves the interests of U.S. foreign policy by demonizing whatever Washington's enemy du jour happens to be at any given time. The piece is short (3 minutes), but very well done, and I was lucky enough not to be left completely on the cutting room floor. (Sadly, though,

Faux alternative media figure peddles Neo-Con agenda, sits on advisory groups with PNAC signatories. *by Tony Cartalucci* *October 20, 2012* - Joseph Farah and his World Net Daily (WND) project attempts to fill a niche, straddling the alternative media, and feeding inquiring minds back into servitude toward the greater corporate-financier agenda. He represents a retrenchment of the right - of the false left-right political paradigm - alongside other disingenuous media personalities like Glenn Beck, and on the left led by the forces of convicted criminal George Soros. *"Arguments: Stepping Back from Anger"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "The emotional trigger than begins an argument may have little to do with your present situation, but has dug up a wound. When we find ourselves in an argument, we may feel like we are losing control of emotions that have taken on lives of their own. When we can become aware that this is happening, taking a deep breath can help us step back from the situation. Once we can separate ourselves from the heat of the moment, we may find that the emotional trigger that began the argument has little to do with the pr... more »

I meant to click on the exit button, but accidentally clicked on scan. That was a big mistake. It was a virus, and it took over the laptop. The virus prompted me to pay $80 to remove it. But, someone I know had done that before – and nothing happened – except that she lost $80. I used another computer to go online and started searching for solutions, and in a couple of hours I had my computer back. I found a program that killed it out... more »

* "Welcome to Ted Nugent's Gun Country!"* Discovery Channel and TV's Descent Into Total Idiocy By Alexander Zaitchik "Discovery is chasing the lowest common ratings denominator by pandering to survivalist gun nuts. If one scene defines last week's premiere of "Ted Nugent's Gun Country", set in the survivalist-thick scrublands surrounding Waco, Texas, it is the show's unnervingly giddy and pony-tailed host standing behind a .50-caliber Browning armor-piercing machine gun and blowing a bunch of holes in the four-inch reinforced steel door used by a team of local "preppers" t... more »
