NEW YORK, NY - AUGUST 17: Dressed in orange prisoner uniforms, students and other activists demonstrate in front of the offices of U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) on August 17, 2011 in New York City. The demonstration, which was organized by Amnesty International USA, was in opposition to the senators support of provisions of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 (NDAA) which would keep the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba open indefinitely. Science Debate
( Maybe they should have said 'scientism' debate )
Antiscience Beliefs Jeopardize U.S. Democracy
The United States faced down authoritarian governments on the left and right. Now it may be facing an even greater challenge from within
If anyone can discover the truth by using reason and science, Jefferson reasoned, then no one
is naturally closer to the truth than anyone else. Consequently, those
in positions of authority do not have the right to impose their beliefs
on other people. The people themselves retain this inalienable right.
Based on this foundation of science—of knowledge gained by systematic
study and testing instead of by the assertions of ideology—the argument
for a new, democratic form of government was self-evident.
Yet despite its history and today's unprecedented riches from science,
the U.S. has begun to slip off of its science foundation. Indeed, in
this election cycle, some 236 years after Jefferson penned the
Declaration of Independence, several major party contenders for
political office took positions that can only be described as
“antiscience”: against evolution, human-induced climate change, vaccines,
stem cell research, and more. A former Republican governor even warned
that his own political party was in danger of becoming “the antiscience
party.”
Such positions could typically be dismissed as nothing more than
election-year posturing except that they reflect an anti-intellectual
conformity that is gaining strength in the U.S. at precisely the moment
that most of the important opportunities for economic growth, and
serious threats to the well-being of the nation, require a better grasp
of scientific issues. By turning public opinion away from the
antiauthoritarian principles of the nation's founders, the new science
denialism is creating an existential crisis like few the country has
faced before.
Why Climate Denialists are Blind to Facts and Reason: The Role of Ideology
...you are operating off of a mistaken premise. You think that the
question of whether or not climate change is real and has an
anthropogenic (human) cause is a question to be answered by application
of an open mind, research, facts, and critical thinking. Isn’t that how
scientists approach these problems? They’re skeptical and critique each
others work, discarding ideas which fail to stand up to scrutiny by
their colleagues and replacing them with ones that better describe the
facts.
Denialists, however, have no interest in facts except as weapons in
an ideological struggle. They don’t even care if “facts” are correct or
not since their intention is not to establish that something is true or
false, but rather to win a battle in an ideological war. If they can
stump you or confuse you with a lie, well that works just as well for
their purposes as does the truth.

Presidential candidates positions very different on climate change issue
Romney said – “Nowhere along the way has the President indicated what actual results his approach would achieve.”
Romney pointed out that “the problem is called Global Warming, not
America Warming. China long ago passed America as the leading emitter of
greenhouse gases.”
Romney says he opposes steps “like a carbon tax or a cap-and-trade
system that would handicap the American economy and drive manufacturing
jobs away.”l without actually “addressing the underlying problem.”
Romney’s position on the key to environmental protection is “economic
growth and technological innovation, not economy-suppressing
regulation.”
“We should pursue what I call a “No Regrets” policy,” the challenger
in the Presidential race said. “Steps that will lead to lower emissions,
but that will benefit America regardless of whether the risks of global
warming materialize and regardless of whether other nations take
effective action.”
( But Obama did not sign any international treaty giving money away on a chimera as Australia did - while Canada and France tossed Kyoto )
Ocean Health:
Scientists estimate that 75 percent of the world’s
fisheries are in serious decline, habitats like coral reefs are
threatened, and large areas of ocean and coastlines are polluted. What
role should the federal government play domestically and through foreign
policy to protect the environmental health and economic vitality of the oceans?
( Depends. What is your opinion of the continued Bush/Cheney tax rebates on deepwater oil drilling post Deepwater Horizon and of the use of extremely toxic dispersants ; supposedly to hide the problem while ensuring it is mobile, increasing its volume and enhancing toxicity ? )
