Hurricane Sandy kills 21 in Caribbean, takes aim at US
Hurricane Sandy pounded the Bahamas after claiming 21 lives in the
Caribbean, including 11 people killed in eastern Cuba.
The hurricane -- now a category two storm -- has wreaked havoc in Jamaica,
Cuba, the Bahamas and Haiti, downing power lines, damaging hundreds of
homes and ruining crops.
Forecasters warn that the massive hurricane now could merge with North
American weather systems and could morph into a powerful hybrid that US
media have dubbed a "Frankenstorm."

From Darkness Into Light
Wit's End - 1 hour ago
For my birthday-in-exile, my friends Peter and Catarina went to Wit's End
to send me pictures of the poor lonely pets I have abandoned while I stay
on Cape Cod with my parents. They captured their idiosyncratic
personalities with irreproachably clever perfection.
CoCo is conspicuously irate, with whiskers curled in haughty opprobrium.
River is mournfully censorious.
Simon is wistfully perplexed, while Bird, who was generously described by
my friends as "overly agile" was actually being his usual psychotic self,
racing madly around and no doubt shrieking excitedly.

“Occam's razor, also Ockham's razor, is a principle attributed to

"Are there any questions?" An offer that comes at the end of college

suppose, but if in fact you do ask a question, both the speaker and the

Sadly, for my many friends partaking of the fad,
eating a raw food diet is a recipe for disaster if you’re trying to boost

hours a day eating to get enough energy from unprocessed raw food alone to

UK Growth or 'triple dip'?
The Q3 figure is so strong that it will lead to a downward rebound in Q4.
The words 'triple dip' are now being bandied around.
There is also the interpretation that the London Olympics skewed the
figures, along with an extra public holiday. (I seem to remember last
year's extra public holiday was thought to have depressed output.)

Catch of the Day
Ed Kilgore reads a dispatch from ace Nevada reporter Jon Ralston about why
Mitt Romney is actively contesting Nevada, and concludes:
So Ralston asks a simple question and comes up with a bunch of possible
answers: maybe it’s about internal polls, or maybe it’s about downballot
races, or maybe it’s a thank-you note to Sheldon Adelson or maybe it’s just
because they have the money so why not spend it?
Truth be told, most campaigns are rolling balls of madness just beneath the
surface.
Yup, and a terribly important insight. This is actually why I put so much
emphasis on the likelihood... more »

the rights of appeal from arbitrations can be varied by prior agreement:

natural feedback mechanisms, essentially runaway global warming.
So why haven't we reached an effective, international consensus on meeting

When the culture no longer serves you well, change it
One of the workshops at the Conference on Honduras last week was on
cultural differences, a subject I have much interest in now that I live
here. It gave me lots to think about, including if there are times when a
country really ought to consider whether certain aspects of its culture are
hindering progress.
That probably sounds like a very colonial thing to say. History is littered
with countries scarred by invasive cultures that arrived uninvited and
proceeded to try to change everything.
I´m not endorsing that practice. But surely there´s no harm in a population

"headless" ladybug discovered in Montana
A newly discovered ladybug is seen in this undated handout photo courtesy
of Montana State University. The insect tucks its head into its throat,
making it not only a new species but an entirely new genus.
Just two specimens of the tan, pinhead-sized ladybugs, also known as
ladybird beetles, have ever been collected, a male in Montana and a female
in Idaho, scientists said.

Keeping it classy, Mr President: Obama describes Romney as 'a bulls***ter'
The extraordinary comment - most American newspapers decline even to print
such a word - came at the end of an interview with 'Rolling Stone' in which
Obama was asked possibly the softest softball question ever lobbed at him.
As he left the Oval Office, Eric Bates, executive editor of 'Rolling
Stone', told Obama that he had asked his six-year-old if there was anything
she wanted him to say to the president and she had responded: 'Tell him:
You can do it.'
According to Bates, Obama grinned and said: 'You know, kids have good

Here's how it works folks. We have elections, see? And they're
first-past-the-post, meaning that all a candidate has to do is get the
largest bloc of votes in the riding to win. That means that if a candidate
has only 30% of the votes and the other 70% of the electors hate that
candidate but divided their votes between other parties, that candidate
gets to represent them all.
In such a context, it is highly important that we at least ensure that at

Suspected Pirates' Gun Battle With Nato Boat
A Nato patrol team exchanges fire with a suspected pirate vessel in a

The HNLMS Rotterdam was carrying out routine patrols when it spotted a

Because the boats are often used as "mother ships" for pirate crews, a
boarding team was sent out to inspect it.
However the Dutch sailors were fired on from the shoreline, and by people

Something about the numbers doesn’t seem to add up.
The U.K. has led the pack, up 362%, followed by the United States, which is
up 223% — even before QE III. China is printing money as well, up 151%
