Guatemala Earthquake: At Least 48 Dead
A 7.4-magnitude earthquake has struck off the Pacific coast of Guatemala,
killing at least 48 people, injuring another 155 and destroying scores of
homes.
The quake, which hit at 10:35 am in the midst of the work day, caused
terror over an unusually wide area, with damage reported in all but one of
Guatemala's 22 states.
It also sparked a tsunami alert on the El Salvador coast and evacuations
from offices, homes and schools as far north as Mexico City, 600 miles to
the northwest.

Bradley Wiggins Crash: Recovering in hospital
Wiggins, 32, was thrown off his bike when a white Vauxhall Astra Envoy is
thought to have pulled out of a petrol station and collided with him.
A police source said his injuries from the crash were thought to be very
serious at first, but later it appeared he suffered a number of broken ribs
and cuts and bruises.

Confederation Overpass Opens
I was beginning to think I'd never see it happen, but after a few delays,
the Confederation Overpass opened for traffic today. While I normally doze
off on the bus ride to work, I'll suck back a little extra caffeine
tomorrow for the ride in so I can see how things go. I would have seen it
on my ride home from work earlier this evening if I hadn't have dozed off.
Theoretically, with the Thickwood overpass (which opened last year) and
the Confed. overpass now in place, you should be able to travel Highway 63
north out of the downtown core without delays.

President Obama was snapped back into the reality of dealing with a fragile
economic recovery today as stocks plunged and job openings dropped to a
five-month low in the wake of his re-election.
The Dow Jones industrial average plummeted 200 points within minutes after

Washingtonians approved same-sex marriage and marijuana decriminalization
last night. This won't exactly trigger a stampede of Vancouverites to
Seattle, it's already effectively decriminalized in Vancouver, but it might
draw tourists from other states.
I take encouragement from little steps like these that show progressivism
is growing next door and it will keep growing. Much of the "no" vote
comes from angry, old white people - emphasis on *old*. They're on their

Syrian rebels kill 10 pro-Assad Palestinian militiamen
Syrian rebels killed 10 members of a Palestinian militant faction loyal to
President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday in fighting near a Palestinian
refugee camp in Damascus, opposition sources said.
Clashes between rebels and the Popular for the Liberation of
Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) have escalated this week in "Street 30"
and the Hajar al-Aswad area near Yarmouk, a camp inhabited by 150,000
Palestinians and as many Syrians.

Missing Lewis Eddleston: Body Found In Yorkshire
Police investigating the disappearance of a 13-year-old boy in Doncaster
have discovered a body in a ditch.
South Yorkshire Police have said it is too early to identify the body, but
confirmed that they are linking it to the disappearance of the missing
teenager, named locally as Lewis Eddleston.

Ash Dieback Threat May Be Worse Than Feared
A deadly fungal disease that threatens to devastate the UK's native ash
trees has been discovered in six new counties.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said the chalara
fraxinea fungus, which causes leaf loss and crown dieback and can lead to
tree death, has now been found in 115 sites.
New cases of ash dieback have been confirmed in Sussex, Berkshire,
Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Bedfordshire and Northumberland - in addition to
Norfolk, Suffolk, Kent and Essex where it had already been identified in
the countryside.

Syrian Rebels Commit War Crime by Executing Government Troops with Bullets of "Hope and Change"
A video taken on November 1st, 2012 shows captured soldiers on the ground
in Saraqeb, in northern Syria, and later shows them being shot to death.
FSA are executing a group of captured government troops. Executing
prisoners of war is in direct violation of the Geneva Convention.
The United Nations said on Friday that a new video from Syria circulating
on the Internet that appears to show antigovernment fighters kicking and
summarily executing a group of frightened captive soldiers or militiamen
could, if verified, represent evidence of a war crime.

Colorado and Washington vote to become first US states to legalize marijuana

Marijuana is now legal in Colorado and Washington for recreational use, and
possibly in Oregon as well.
While the decision in Colorado is historic, it was not without controversy:
The measure won by a close six-point margin, 53% in favor to 47% opposed.

Unarmed Judge killed in Syria car bombing by Rebels
A judge has been killed in a bombing in a residential district of Damascus,
Syrian state media said.
The Sana news agency said a "terrorist group" planted explosives under the
car of Judge Abad Nadhwah in the Barzeh district.
The bomb was detonated remotely, killing him instantly.

One employee at the scene who declined to be named told AFP around 40

Storm-battered New York and New Jersey ordered the evacuation ahead of new Storm
The looming bad weather has New York and New Jersey on edge again as the

Syrian rebels fired mortars at President Bashar al-Assad's palace in
Damascus on Wednesday but missed, in an attack underlining the growing
boldness of forces fighting to end his family's 42 years in power.

Barack Obama has learned a lot in the last four years. During the first two
years of his presidency, many of his supporters grumbled that he didn't
understand who he was dealing with. When Republicans said that their first
priority was to make him a one term president, they were serious.
But the 2010 elections got his attention. And the debt ceiling debacle
convinced him that the old admonition, "Early to bed and early to rise.
Work like hell and organize" was the only way to deal with his opposition.
And that's why Obama and the Democrats won the White House yesterday.

Ghana Shopping Centre Collapses
A six-storey shopping centre has collapsed in Ghana, leaving an unknown
number of victims trapped in the rubble.
It is thought the top three floors of the Melcom mall in the Ghanaian
capital Accra came down.
