Too ill to stand trial for fraud. . . but disgraced former MP Margaret Moran is spotted at the pub FIVE DAYS after missing court date because she was 'too depressed'

The ex-Labour MP was seen drinking at a pub in West End, Southampton, with her husband Michael Booker (above) only five days after she was deemed too depressed to defend herself in court. She did not have to appear at Southwark Crown Court on November 13 nor enter a plea to the 15 charges of false accounting and six of using false information after a judge ruled her 'severe depressive disorder' meant she was unable to defend herself. 'Austerity Era Could Last Up To Eight Years'

A key financial target of the Chancellor's Autumn Statement next week may have to be abandoned, according to a leading think tank. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) has said that the target that debt should be falling in the 2015-16 tax year may be too difficult to achieve. The IFS added that George Osborne may even be forced to announce yet more spending cuts or tax increases for the next Parliament in order to meet his other fiscal targets. http://news.sky.com/story/1016241/austerity-era-could-last-up-to-eight-years

Ohio GOP Revs Up The Republican Party War Against Women Again

President Obama would have been reelected even without Ohio's 18 electoral votes, but it was clear from Day One that Romney would have no chance to capture the White House without them. In the end it was pretty close. Obama took 2,697,260 and Romney took 2,593,779. Republicans also banked heavily on winning back the Senate by defeating Ohio Democratic freshman Sherrod Brown. Aside from the $16 million their candidate, Josh Mandel, spent himself, another $22,000,000 was spent by outside groups to tear down Brown and bolster Mandel. It didn't work. Artur Mas, the current Catalonia president and leader of the centre-right Covergence and Union (CiU) alliance, had promised a referendum on "self-determination" if the election had given him a strong mandate. A temporary cessation of hostilities in which Iran can re-arm Hamas with more rockets to fire at civilians, the *chatterati* can lambast Israel for responding, and Hamas can celebrate “victory” by broadcasting “death to Israel” music on the very day the “ceasefire” began. In which a “blockade” still exists, but only on weapons—which Hamas seem to have no problems getting anyway—and there’s a memory black-hole about the border Gaza enjoys abutting Egypt. Both Benghazi And The Petraeus Scandal Suggest US Media Is Way Too Cozy With The State

Intercept at The Intercept - 11 hours ago
Business Insider Geoffrey Ingersoll [image: newsweek cover obama gay president] If there is just one lesson to take away from the Benghazi and Petraeus affairs it's that the American media is way too cozy with heads of state. Immediately following the Benghazi crisis, U.S. gersollmedia did its due diligence and flexed its sources, anonymous and otherwise, to uncover the truth about the attack — but then they purposely failed to report the details because of requests from the CIA and the Obama administration. Political Polarization in Egypt

Hani Fakhouri at Middle East Today - 12 hours ago
The recent military flare up in Gaza between Hamas and the Israeli military forces led to the killings of more than 160 Palestinians and more than 1,200 injuries. Adding to the devastation was the destruction of homes and public and economic facilities. President Morsi of Egypt played an important mediator role between the feuding parties, which led to a truce and a ceasefire. President Morsi gained recognition from the U.S. government and other western powers for his efforts. Right after this achievement, President Morsi committed a political blunder by issuing constitutional dec... more »

When Propaganda Masquarades as News

Intercept at The Intercept - 12 hours ago
Global Research Prof. James F. Tracy [image: news1]The week-long Israeli onslaught against largely defenseless Palestinians in Gaza that began on November 14 provides a basis for assessing how Western corporate media whitewash the war crimes of America’s foremost ally in the Middle East. There are three often intertwined techniques consciously applied to such news coverage—historical context, sourcing, and objectification of the enemy to be targeted. Such practices can readily transform journalism into propaganda that acts to abet such crimes while at the same time allowing journal... more »

For a while, India and China even claimed to have finally settled their dangerous border dispute. If they ever had a deal, it seems that deal is in doubt. The land in question is the northernmost Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh and the Himalayan region of Aksai Chin. In new Chinese passports those regions are shown as belonging to the People's Republic. India has responded by stamping the Chinese passports with its own map showing the regions as Indian. China and India went to war along this border in 1962. Since then India has claimed China has illegally occupied its ter... more »

Is there Bias on BBC Question Time?

Phil at A Very Public Sociologist - 14 hours ago
Is the BBC in thrall to the liberal establishment? Do right-wingers take to the telly in disproportionate numbers? Does it really deserve its Tory epithet, 'Buggers Broadcasting Communism'? Or is the BBC getting it about right in striking an impartial balance? Whichever way you look at it, these are not a set of questions likely to be settled by a single blog post. But one place you might want to look for evidence of BBC bias is its flagship politics programme, *Question Time*. More specifically, if there is a leaning to the left or the right, this could be clarified by the politi... more »

Italy centre left picks candidate for next prime minister

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 15 hours ago
Italy's centre left voted on Sunday to choose the candidate who will be the leading contender to succeed Mario Monti as prime minister after an election in March and take charge of steering the country through a deep recession. Opinion surveys show Democratic Party leader Pier Luigi Bersani is the frontrunner among five candidates, followed by Florence mayor Matteo Renzi, who has vowed to shake up Italy's political establishment if he is chosen to lead the alliance. The vote will eliminate a major element of uncertainty in choosing a successor to Monti's technocrat government. htt... more »
