Saturn Storm Clouds Captured By Probe

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 10 minutes ago
Nasa's Cassini spacecraft has captured dramatic images of rolling storm clouds on Saturn. The pictures were obtained while the spacecraft was "travelling the Saturnian system in a set of inclined, or tilted, orbits that give mission scientists a vertigo-inducing view of Saturn's polar regions," Nasa said. The results show storm clouds and a swirling vortex at the centre of Saturn's north polar hexagon. Nasa said Cassini has seen storms circling Saturn's north pole in the past, but only in infrared wavelengths because the north pole was in darkness. http://news.sky.com/story/101835... more »

When I Look At the World I Always See Canada

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 11 minutes ago
These days most of my political views of Canada are informed by what I learn about events and conditions outside Canada. And, as I learn more of those events and conditions, I grow increasingly dissatisfied with how we conduct ourselves as Canadians. Many of us try to give ourselves a pass. We're just a tiny country. Less than 40-million after all. What we do or don't do really isn't going to impact elsewhere. We're insignificant. We can do what we like. As I learn more of what is going on elsewhere in the world it becomes increasingly apparent how connected we all are a... more »

North Korea has made further progress in the construction of a new atomic reactor, the U.N. nuclear chief reported on Thursday, a facility that may extend the country's capacity to produce material for nuclear bombs. Internet connections & telecom reportedly failing across Syria, right as NATO has finished preparing their proxy "SNC" and readies for final push. *November 29, 2012* (LD) - In early summer, NATO had attempted to overwhelm Damascus and Aleppo with a torrent of psychological operations, communication disruptions, foreign terrorists crossing Syria's borders, and a devastating assassination of top Syrian officials in the heart of Damascus. If you're as sick of lame ducks and austerity bombs as I am, how about we delve into some real excitement today: the annual debate on the Senate filibuster. Just as he has done almost every year, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is again threatening to tweak the procedure that has allowed the Republican minority to essentially bring the business of the already lumbering body to a screeching halt. Last time, he and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell reached a "gentleman's agreement" in which both sides promised to play nice and not abuse the privilege. We can see how well that little w... more »

Romney Campaign Still Math-Challenged

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 50 minutes ago
A bunch of liberals (here's one; here's another) had good fun yesterday with an op-ed by Romney strategist Stuart Stevens yesterday. The main point of the ribbing was that Romney's campaign apparently still doesn't quite understand that all the votes count, not just those from the groups they really liked. But unless I missed it, no one noticed that Stevens still doesn't seem to have any idea of just how badly Romney lost. He says "Nor are we idiots because we came a little more than 320,000 votes short of winning the Electoral College in 2012." 320,000 votes? I don't think so. By ... more »

Climate Science Denies the Standard Atmosphere, In Order to Save Itself Embarrassment

Harry Dale Huffman at The Earth and Man: Setting the Stage - 1 hour ago
I have just learned, from a comment on Steven Goddard's Real Science site, that climate scientists have announced a new value of the average surface temperature on Earth, of 14°C. This, however, amounts to an unjustified and unauthorized trashing of the Standard Atmosphere model, which has for a century or more given 15°C as that average surface temperature. Anyone who has read my Venus/Earth temperatures comparison, which uses the Standard Atmosphere model, knows that model is precisely confirmed by that analysis. Website for this image* *The excellent CanSpeccy writes:* A person's tendency to irrational hate is, I suspect, more or less inversely related to their power. *Those without money, social position, authority, good looks, or achievements of any significance, are, on this view, the most likely to engage in bullying, lynching, and cheering on brutal fascist leaders.* * *Hence the lynch mobs of the US Deep South, where the white "trash" were inclined to take it out on niggers, the only people more powerless than themselves. Hence, today, the demonization and casual... more »

November 28, 1972

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 9 hours ago
In an incredibly foolish move, Nixon has decided to nominate Patrick Gray for the FBI job; Gray had been the acting director since Hoover died, but choosing to put Gray in front of a Senate committee in a confirmation battle was not at all a wise move. At Camp David, Nixon and Bob Haldeman, the White House Chief of Staff, talk about Gray, with the president thinking that "if they did ask Pat Gray in his confirmation about Watergate" that nothing would come of it. Of course, when White House personnel had been asked about Watergate by Gray's FBI they were able to get away with phony ... more »

Mid-November, 1972

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 10 hours ago
My apologies; I've fallen behind on the story, what with the election and all. But it's time to get back to it. As you may recall, the five men arrested at the break-in, Hunt, and Liddy have all been indicted and are awaiting trial. Numerous members of the White House and campaign staffs perjured themselves, coordinated by John Dean, to keep the story of rogue campaign aides intact through the election; the indicted men themselves were taken care of with cash. After the election, however, it turns out that the hush money operation had fallen behind, and the indicted men were start... more »

Glenn Greenwald on The Global Battlefield Idea

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 10 hours ago
The "global battlefield" idea is a dangerous idea. It turns the whole world into a killing zone. Obaaama's drones can reach any target in the world under the abstract umbrella of the "war on terror." But, Washington is defining political activists and social reformers as combatants and terrorists, so this isn't a war against terror. In reality, it is a *war against freedom*. Glenn Greenwald: "If you go and look at the premises of George Bush and Dick Cheney's theory of executive power and counter-terrorism that caused so much controversy among Democrats back when Republicans wer... more »

Disney Exposes Children to Lewd Homosexual Activity on Daytime Broadcast TV

MrArbitrage at Table Of Wisdom.com - 11 hours ago
In a disgraceful breach of fiduciary responsibility to shareholders, Disney Execs allowed their television network to willfully and premeditatedly expose millions of children and families to two men performing homosexual acts with one another. This was in the middle of the afternoon's highly rated college football game coverage on Thanksgiving Weekend. This is a clear example of incompetent executives abusing shareholder assets, undermining the reputation of the brand and the trust that the word Disney at one time conveyed. This was all committed for the selfish desire of advancing ... more »

A freak tornado has smashed into Europe's largest steel plant in the Italian city of Taranto, leaving one person missing and dozens injured. Rahm's Greatest Hit Has Done All The Damage He Can As A Congressmember-- Now He's Ambling Off To K Street: Heath Shuler DC's Latest Revolving Door Lobbyist

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 11 hours ago
Sleazy lobbyist Heath Shuler-- the ultimate lame duck If you're a *DWT* regular, I don't have to tell you who North Carolina Blue Dog Heath Shuler is. We've been following him with trepidation since Rahm Emanuel plucked him away from Tennessee Republicans to run as a North Carolina "Democrat" in 2006. Since then he racked up a dismal 37.93 critical vote score from ProgressivePunch, even worse than the other two North Carolina Blue Dogs, Mike McIntyre and Larry Kissell. Shuler, an anti-Choice, antigay, anti-immigrant bigot has voted more frequently with Boehner than with Pelosi and ha... more »

Fox Doctor Psychoanalyzes Psy And His Gangnam Song

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 11 hours ago
This is an interesting video. Fox News psychiatrist Keith Ablow talks with Bill O'Reilly about the popular song *"Gangnam Style"* by the South Korean pop artist Psy. Cenk Uygur, the host of the Young Turks, pokes fun at the Fox clip. But the Fox doctor is right. However, he does over-analyze the song and its massive popularity. People have always wanted to listen to catchy tunes, especially during dark times. This is completely normal. The 1920s was all about escapism. But then came the Great Depression and Woody Guthrie. Moods, cultures, and music styles change. The 2000s has also... more »

Obama opposes Silicon Valley firms on immigration reform

Rich Rifkin at Lexicon Daily - 13 hours ago
Allegedly because it is not part of a "comprehensive immigration reform" bill, CNET is reporting that President Obama opposes "the Republican-backed STEM Jobs Act of 2012, which would make up to 55,000 visas available to foreigners who earned a master's or doctoral degree in certain science or technology area from a U.S. university. Those visas would only be available if immigration authorities certify that no American workers are available to fill the post." Obama has not said he will veto this bill, but that is a possibility. It's rather surprising for a few reasons that the p... more »

What will happen on the Rob Ford appeal

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 14 hours ago
I have predicted this wrongly so far but ... Ford will get a stay pending an appeal. The appeal will be expedited and heard in January. Ford will lose the appeal because the judgment is based on a finding of fact - the donations were not immaterial.

There exists in the world, forces, entities, people, organisms, those who lack the propensity for empathy. Sociopaths. Psychopaths. Those bent on destruction, without remorse. The world we live in is a result of the willful destruction of such existences. Also. There exists in the world, forces of good. Those bent on creation, creativity, preservation, fecundity. Living in a world of productivity and abundance, rather than strife. The battle between life and destruction will never cease. But no other battle exists. What more of substance is there to fight for? Of what value is the ... more »
