The Folded Napkin ... A Truckers Story

I try not to be biased, but I had my doubts about hiring Stevie. His placement counselor assured me that he would be a good, reliable busboy. But I had never had a mentally handicapped employee and wasn't sure I wanted one. I wasn't sure how my customers would react to Stevie. He was short, a little dumpy with the smooth facial features and thick-tongued speech of Downs Syndrome.

I wasn't worried about most of my trucker customers because truckers don't generally care who buses tables as long as the meatloaf platter is good and the pies are homemade. The four-wheeler drivers were the ones who concerned me; the mouthy college kids traveling to school; the yuppie snobs who secretly polish their silverware with their napkins for fear of catching some dreaded "truck stop germ" the pairs of white-shirted business men on expense accounts who think every truck stop waitress wants to be flirted with. I knew those people would be uncomfortable around Stevie so I closely watched him for the first few weeks.

I shouldn't have worried. After the first week, Stevie had my staff wrapped around his stubby little finger, and within a month my truck regulars had adopted him as their official truck stop mascot. After that, I really didn't care what the rest of the customers thought of him. He was like a 21-year-old in blue jeans and Nikes, eager to laugh and eager to please, but fierce in his attention to his duties. Every salt and pepper shaker was exactly in its place, not a bread crumb or coffee spill was visible when Stevie got done with the table.

Our only problem was persuading him to wait to clean a table until after the customers were finished. He would hover in the background, shifting his weight from one foot to the other, scanning the dining room until a table was empty. Then he would scurry to the empty table and carefully bus dishes and glasses onto cart and meticulously wipe the table up with a practiced flourish of his rag. If he thought a customer was watching, his brow would pucker with added concentration. He took pride in doing his job exactly right, and you had to love how hard he tried to please each and every person he met.

Over time, we learned that he lived with his mother, a widow who was disabled after repeated surgeries for cancer. They lived on their Social Security benefits in public housing two miles from the truck stop. Their social worker, who stopped to check on him every so often, admitted they had fallen between the cracks. Money was tight, and what I paid him was probably the difference between them being able to live together and Stevie being sent to a group home. That's why the restaurant was a gloomy place that morning last August, the first morning in three years that Stevie missed work.

He was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester getting a new valve or something put in his heart. His social worker said that people with Downs Syndrome often have heart problems at an early age so this wasn't unexpected, and there was a good chance he would come through the surgery in good shape and be back at work in a few months.

A ripple of excitement ran through the staff later that morning when word came that he was out of surgery, in recovery, and doing fine. Frannie, the head waitress, let out a war hoop and did a little dance in the aisle when she heard the good news. Bell Ringer, one of our regular trucker customers, stared at the sight of this 50-year-old grandmother of four doing a victory shimmy beside his table. Frannie blushed, smoothed her apron and shot Belle Ringer a withering look.

He grinned. "OK, Frannie, what was that all about?" he asked.

"We just got word that Stevie is out of surgery and going to be okay."

"I was wondering where he was. I had a new joke to tell him. What was the surgery about?"

Frannie quickly told Bell Ringer and the other two drivers sitting at his booth about Stevie's surgery, then sighed: "Yeah, I'm glad he is going to be OK," she said. "But I don't know how he and his Mom are going to handle all the bills. From what I hear, they're barely getting by as it is." Belle Ringer nodded thoughtfully, and Frannie hurried off to wait on the rest of her tables.

Since I hadn't had time to round up a busboy to replace Stevie and really didn't want to replace him, the girls were busing their own tables that day until we decided what to do. After the morning rush, Frannie walked into my office. She had a couple of paper napkins in her hand and a funny look on her face.

"What's up?" I asked.

"I didn't get that table where Bell Ringer and his friends were sitting cleared off after they left, and Pony Pete and Tony Tipper were sitting there when I got back to clean it off," she said. "This was folded and tucked under a coffee cup."

She handed the napkin to me, and three $20 bills fell onto my desk when I opened it. On the outside, in big, bold letters, was printed "Something For Stevie.

Pony Pete asked me what that was all about," she said, "so I told him about Stevie and his Mom and everything, and Pete looked at Tony and Tony looked at Pete, and they ended up giving me this." She handed me another paper napkin that had "Something For Stevie" scrawled on its outside. Two $50 bills were tucked within its folds.

Frannie looked at me with wet, shiny eyes, shook her head and said simply: "truckers."

That was three months ago. Today is Thanksgiving, the first day Stevie is supposed to be back to work. His placement worker said he's been counting the days until the doctor said he could work, and it didn't matter at all that it was a holiday. He called 10 times in the past week, making sure we knew he was coming, fearful that we had forgotten him or that his job was in jeopardy.

I arranged to have his mother bring him to work. I then met them in the parking lot and invited them both to celebrate his day back. Stevie was thinner and paler, but couldn't stop grinning as he pushed through the doors and headed for the back room where his apron and busing cart were waiting.

"Hold up there, Stevie, not so fast," I said. I took him and his mother by their arms. "Work can wait for a minute. To celebrate you coming back, breakfast for you and your mother is on me!"

I led them toward a large corner booth at the rear of the room. I could feel and hear the rest of the staff following behind as we marched through the dining room. Glancing over my shoulder, I saw booth after booth of grinning truckers empty and join the procession. We stopped in front of the big table. Its surface was covered with coffee cups, saucers and dinner plates, all sitting slightly crooked on dozens of folded paper napkins.

"First thing you have to do, Stevie, is clean up this mess," I said. I tried to sound stern. Stevie looked at me, and then at his mother, then pulled out one of the napkins. It had "Something for Stevie" printed on the outside. As he picked it up, two $10 bills fell onto the table.

Stevie stared at the money, then at all the napkins peeking from beneath the tableware, each with his name printed or scrawled on it. I turned to his mother.

"There's more than $10,000 in cash and checks on table, all from truckers and trucking companies that heard about your problems. "Happy Thanksgiving,"

Well, it got real noisy about that time, with everybody hollering and shouting, and there were a few tears, as well. But you know what's funny? While everybody else was busy shaking hands and hugging each other, Stevie, with a big, big smile on his face, was busy clearing all the cups and dishes from the table. Best worker I ever hired.

Plant a seed and watch it grow. At this point, you can bury this inspirational message or forward it fulfilling the need! If you shed a tear, hug yourself, because you are a compassionate person.

HAARP Unleashes Tesla Death Ray http://tiny.cc/ooadow

Disturbing evidence is emerging that HAARP has been weaponized. Noted Brazilian physicist, Dr. Fran De Aquino, recently asserted the fully functional HAARP network is not only modifying weather and geophysical events, it may also be warping space and gravity—even time! Now applications of Nikola Tesla’s legendary “Death Ray” weapon may have been activated.

HAARP’s high frequency radiowaves that can be intensified, modulated and directed to almost any place on Earth, are built upon some of the most advanced work of the legendary inventor and visionary, Nikola Tesla. Tesla worked for decades on a revolutionary weapons technology he named teleforce: a powerful, deadly death ray Tesla claimed would change warfare forever.

Recently, bizarre auroras and disturbances to landmasses have called attention to the possibility that elements of HAARP technology have been weaponized to adopt Tesla’s annihilating death ray that works with the propigation of focused radio frequencies to disrupt the bonds that keep molecules together using nonlinear effects of intense radiated power.

Mysterious disappearances

As early as 2009 the warning sign of a HAARP superweapon left its signature on a tiny Mexican island In the Gulf of Mexico. The island, named Bermeja, was there one day and, quite simply disappeared the next.

Bermeja before it vanished
The mystery has never been solved. Although the official explanation is “global warming” and rising waters, the Gulf didn’t measurably rise during 2009, nor did the seafloor drop.

Cleo Paskal, an associate fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London, notes: “In September 2009 it was reported that, in spite of being on maps for centuries, the tiny island of Bermeja, in the Gulf of Mexico, could no longer be found.

Former location of the vanished island, Bermeja
“The Mexican Government sent out planes and boats and used satellites to try to find it but it was gone. And, along with it, a large claim Mexico was making in the hydrocarbon-rich waters of the Gulf. Some in Mexico said that, clearly, the CIA had blown up their island to subvert their stake.

“The United States’ response was clear: no island, no claim.”
How convenient. Vaporized at the touch of a button?

It’s claimed the island inexplicably vanished. Or was it inexplicable?
At the time the island ceased to exist strange phenomena were reported in and around the Gulf of Mexico. Shimmering rainbow clouds formed and massive chemtrail spraying took place. At the same time mysterious vortexes erupted in the normally placid waters.

Odder still, sailors in the vicinity of Bermeja the day of its disappearance reported bizarre light refraction in the skies. Their testimony was written off as unconfirmed UFO reports.
Yet the display of energy and the vortexes are telltale signs of HAARP activity. The kind of activity that has nothing to do with analyzing and experimenting with the ionosphere.

New Moore Island is now no more island
And then another island just vanished. This one too was there one day and gone the next. That tiny bit of land called New Moore Island was claimed by both India and Bangladesh. The two nations fought political turf wars over it.

Could it be that both disappearances were caused by covert tests of a radical new technology based on Tesla’s teleforce weapon? Both islands vanished without a trace as if they had simply disintegrated.

HAARP’s nonlinear power
The case of a weaponized HAARP was argued by the late Dr. Rosalie Bertell who wrote: “…the nonlinear effects of one billion watts of effective radiated power being directed at the ionosphere by the HAARP transmitter [is overwhelming]. This is the first phase capability of the project. The second phase will increase the effective radiated power levels even further—to 4.7 billion watts!

Dr. Rosalie Bertell
“Energy in certain frequencies when reaching the outermost portions of the ionosphere can be amplified up to 1,000 times by natural processes. This phenomena has been recorded by scientists at UCLA who have observed the results of these power amplifications at a fraction of the power level which HAARP will transfer to this region. This is extremely important in considering what may occur with this level of energy. A serious environmental disaster may well be the result.”

HAARP nonlinear radial energy vortex Vaporizing cities

Some investigators of the HAARP facilities in Alaska and Peru believe that the radiated power is now approaching 10 billion watts. That kind of raw energy directed through an array configured along the design of the teleforce could not only vaporize islands and mountains, but whole cities.

It’s a power that Tesla claimed he had created more than 90 years ago.

Illustration of a HAARP pulse bouncing off ionosphere
Bertell added, “The earlier referenced article from 21st Century magazine goes on to describe the implications of the use of phased array antennas and their potentials at 1 billion watt power levels. This is the antenna array HAARP uses and the level of power it is designed to broadcast.

Physicist Dr. Fran De Aquino warns of HAARP capabilities
“What the article describes is a system which can be used for knocking down missiles and aircraft by effecting their guidance systems and creating atmospheric disturbances which lead to them crashing.

“They also talk about the ability, at lower power levels, to be able to look down from the ionosphere and detect cruise missiles and other incoming objects utilizing what was described as an advanced form of radar. Again this is exactly what has been described in the HAARP patents.”

Knocking down aircraft was the original function of the teleforce weapon. More advanced technology and greater power transforms the death ray into a city-killer—even a potential continent killer. Given enough power and a vantage point from space, the teleforce could theoretically take out an entire planet like the Death Star did in Star Wars.

Nurse Rise ~ Nurses for Safe Water

ILNESSES FOLLOWING FRACKING

VIDEO
"...They're putting an increased amount into the medical care around here that we haven't seen before. It's an enormous amount of money, specialty areas, cancer. And I believe that they know there's going to be an increase, or that they're seeing an increase already” said Knapp...
"...Carol is convinced her water is contaminated by the fracking. "We ended up experiencing rashes on our bodies, and I still have rashes," Carol said in an exclusive interview. "Not as bad[now] because I only shower in my water. I don't drink my water, nor do I drink the milk we produce." (Note from NURSE RISE- Carol has asked to have the milk produced by her cows, who must drink the water, tested, but to date, her request has not been granted) "Carol says her water now gels like Jell-o and sometimes contains sand - and it's what they fear is causing so many problems. Her daughter suffered much worse than just a rash, becoming si
ck to the point of hospitalization.

"Her spleen and her liver and her right ovary were very enlarged," Carol explained. "They treated her for a urinary tract infection. And four days later, they called and said, 'We don't know what's wrong with her. She does not have a urinary tract infection.' And
just like the rashes, they don't know what's wrong."
Carol's daughter only found relief by living out of state. After moving to Tennessee, her condition drastically improved.

(Nurse Rise comment -Obviously moving out of state is NOT an Option for most people living in Fracked Zones)
Back in Pennsylvania, French and neighboring farmer Carolyn Knapp are not happy. Carolyn's husband suffers from the same rash as Carol. She brought his symptoms to a doctor.

“When I asked him ‘Could this possibly be the water that's doing this?’ He didn't deny it,” said French. She thinks doctors are preparing for even more problems.

Her daughter suffered much worse than just a rash, becoming sick to the point of hospitalization.

“They're putting an increased amount into the medical care around here that we haven't seen before. It's an enormous amount of money, specialty areas, cancer. And I believe that they know there's going to be an increase, or that they're seeing an increase already” said Knapp.

There’s been one issue that’s driven my career as a lawyer: Radiation. My first major case — more than two decades ago in southern Mississippi — involved a small, brother-owned company that cleaned out pipe from oil-patch production. It turned out that the dust — known as scale — that the Street brothers and their workers scraped out of those pipes was radioactive and making workers and even family members very ill. Ultimately, at trial, we produced documents showing that Big Oil had known about radiation from oil-field production for decades yet done nothing about it, and we forced Chevron to agree to a settlement.

He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

The Sour Sop or the fruit from the Graviola tree is a miraculous natural cancer cell killer 10,000 times stronger than Chemo.

► www.knowledgeoftoday.org/2012/06/fda-cancer-industry-prevent-cure.html — The Cancer Industry EXPOSED! Ways to Prevent and CURE Cancer

"10000 times stronger killer of CANCER than Chemo".. do share it.. can save many lives, fill up hopes and build confidence in the patien
ts...

Why are we not aware of this? Its because some big corporation want to make back their money spent on years of research by trying to make a synthetic version of it for sale.

So, since you know it now you can help a friend in need by letting him know or just drink some sour sop juice yourself as prevention from time to time. The taste is not bad after all. It’s completely natural and definitely has no side effects. If you have the space, plant one in your garden.

The other parts of the tree are also useful. The next time you have a fruit juice, ask for a sour sop.

How many people died in vain while this billion-dollar drug maker concealed the secret of the miraculous Graviola tree?

This tree is low and is called Graviola in Brazil, Guanabana in Spanish and has the uninspiring name “Sour Sop” in English. The fruit is very large and the subacid sweet white pulp is eaten out of hand or, more commonly, used to make fruit drinks, sherbets and such.

The principal interest in this plant is because of its strong anti-cancer effects. Although it is effective for a number of medical conditions, it is its anti tumor effect that is of most interest. This plant is a proven cancer remedy for cancers of all types.

Besides being a cancer remedy, Graviola is a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent for both bacterial and fungal infections, is effective against internal parasites and worms, lowers high blood pressure and is used for depression, stress and nervous disorders.

If there ever was a single example that makes it dramatically clear why the existence of Health Sciences Institute is so vital to Americans like you, it’s the incredible story behind the Graviola tree..

The truth is stunningly simple: Deep within the Amazon Rainforest grows a tree that could literally revolutionize what you, your doctor, and the rest of the world thinks about cancer treatment and chances of survival. The future has never looked more promising.

Research shows that with extracts from this miraculous tree it now may be possible to:

-Attack cancer safely and effectively with an all-natural therapy that does not cause extreme nausea, weight loss and hair loss
-Protect your immune system and avoid deadly infections
-Feel stronger and healthier throughout the course of the treatment
-Boost your energy and improve your outlook on life

The source of this information is just as stunning: It comes from one of America‘s largest drug manufacturers, the fruit of over 20 laboratory tests conducted since the 1970's! What those tests revealed was nothing short of mind numbing… Extracts from the tree were shown to:

* Effectively target and kill malignant cells in 12 types of cancer, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreatic cancer..

* The tree compounds proved to be up to 10,000 times stronger in slowing the growth of cancer cells than Adriamycin, a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug!

* What’s more, unlike chemotherapy, the compound extracted from the Graviola tree selectively hunts down and kills only cancer cells.. It does not harm healthy cells!

The amazing anti-cancer properties of the Graviola tree have been extensively researched–so why haven’t you heard anything about it? If Graviola extract is one of America‘s biggest billion-dollar drug makers began a search for a cancer cure and their research centered on Graviola, a legendary healing tree from the Amazon Rainforest.

Various parts of the Graviola tree–including the bark, leaves, roots, fruit and fruit-seeds–have been used for centuries by medicine men and native Indians in South America to treat heart disease, asthma, liver problems and arthritis. Going on very little documented scientific evidence, the company poured money and resources into testing the tree’s anti-cancerous properties–and were shocked by the results. Graviola proved itself to be a cancer-killing dynamo.

But that’s where the Graviola story nearly ended.

The company had one huge problem with the Graviola tree–it’s completely natural, and so, under federal law, not patentable. There’s no way to make serious profits from it.

It turns out the drug company invested nearly seven years trying to synthesize two of the Graviola tree’s most powerful anti-cancer ingredients. If they could isolate and produce man-made clones of what makes the Graviola so potent, they’d be able to patent it and make their money back. Alas, they hit a brick wall. The original simply could not be replicated. There was no way the company could protect its profits–or even make back the millions it poured into research.

As the dream of huge profits evaporated, their testing on Graviola came to a screeching halt. Even worse, the company shelved the entire project and chose not to publish the findings of its research!

Luckily, however, there was one scientist from the Graviola research team whose conscience wouldn’t let him see such atrocity committed. Risking his career, he contacted a company that’s dedicated to harvesting medical plants from the Amazon Rainforest and blew the whistle.

Miracle unleashed
When researchers at the Health Sciences Institute were alerted to the news of Graviola,! they began tracking the research done on the cancer-killing tree. Evidence of the astounding effectiveness of Graviola–and its shocking cover-up–came in fast and furious….

….The National Cancer Institute performed the first scientific research in 1976. The results showed that Graviola’s “leaves and stems were found effective in attacking and destroying malignant cells.” Inexplicably, the results were published in an internal report and never released to the public…

….Since 1976, Graviola has proven to be an immensely potent cancer killer in 20 independent laboratory tests, yet no double-blind clinical trials–the typical benchmark mainstream doctors and journals use to judge a treatment’s value–were ever initiated….

….A study published in the Journal of Natural Products, following a recent study conducted at Catholic University of South Korea stated that one chemical in Graviola was found to selectively kill colon cancer cells at “10,000 times the potency of (the commonly used chemotherapy drug) Adriamycin…”

….The most significant part of the Catholic University of South Korea report is that Graviola was shown to selectively target the cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched. Unlike chemotherapy, which indiscriminately targets all actively reproducing cells (such as stomach and hair cells), causing the often devastating side effects of nausea and hair loss in cancer patients.

…A study at Purdue University recently found that leaves from the Graviola tree killed cancer cells among six human cell lines and were especially effective against prostate, pancreatic and lung cancers Seven years of silence broken–it’s finally here!"

Good combinations. My favorite beverage (which I invented) is the 'Green Palmer', which in its simplest form is a mix of green tea and lemonade (though when I'm home I use a green tea, white tea, and herbal blend instead of straight green tea). A giant solar storm could potentially take out satellites, GPS systems, electrical grids, communication networks and pretty much anything else that runs on electricity or that relies upon electronics. And considering how dependent our society has become on technology, we are talking about an event that could possibly bring about the end of the world as we know it. Right now, solar activity is increasing as we approach the peak of Solar Cycle 24. But the worst is yet to come.

Black Friday Gun Sales Hit New Record High

Overwhelming demand crashes FBI background check center

Paul Joseph Watson - November 27, 2012

Black Friday gun sales hit an all time record high last week with demand for new firearms so overwhelming that it caused outages at the FBI background check center on two separate occasions.

Fueled by fears that the Obama administration will go after gun rights during a lame duck term, the FBI reported 154,873 background check requests on Friday – a 20 per cent increase on last year’s record total of 129,166 checks.

The number of guns sold could actually be double or more that figure because only one background check is recorded per sale even if buyers purchase multiple firearms.

“With the recent election, some people are making buying decisions just in case something (new law) happens,” Don Gallardo, manager of Shooter’s World in Phoenix, told USA Today.

Gun stores noted that first time gun owners and women represented a significant number of those purchasing firearms on Black Friday.

Gun sales were so brisk that the FBI’s Instant Background Check center was overwhelmed with the volume of requests and crashed on two separate occasions. Some even saw the outages as an insidious way of providing “anti-gunners a clue about how to suspend the Second Amendment.”

President Obama indicated during the presidential debates that he would pursue an assault weapons ban, which second amendment activists see as merely the first step towards wider gun control regulation.

Obama also indicated that he would attempt to eviscerate the right to keep and bear arms during a White House meeting with gun control advocate Sarah Brady last year. During the meeting, Obama told Brady he was working “under the radar” on new gun control policy. Brady added that Obama assured her gun control was “very much on his agenda.”

But it’s not just Obama’s conduct on the domestic front that has second amendment activists concerned. The Obama administration’s willingness to sign up to a United Nations global arms treaty which threatens to outlaw guns in the U.S. is also driving firearms sales.

Final discussions on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) are set to take place in March next year. The New American notes that, “Section III, Paragraphs 7 and 8 of the Programme of Action mandate that if a member state cannot get rid of privately owned small arms legislatively, then the control of “customs, police, intelligence, and arms control” will be placed under the power of a board of UN bureaucrats operating out of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs,” opening the door to UN peacekeeping forces to disarm American citizens.

ys he suffered neurological problems including memory loss, headaches and stammering after inhaling Monsanto's (MON.N) Lasso weedkiller in 2004.

He blames the agri-business giant for not providing adequate warnings on the product label.

The ruling was given by a court in Lyon, southeast France, which ordered an expert opinion of Francois's losses to establish the sum of damages.

Lawyers for Monsanto could not immediately be reached for comment.

Previous health claims from farmers have foundered because of the difficulty of establishing clear links between illnesses and exposure to pesticides.

"I am alive today, but part of the farming population is going to be sacrificed and is going to die because of this," Francois, 47, told Reuters.

He and other farmers suffering from illness set up an association last year to make a case that their health problems should be linked to their use of crop protection products.

The agricultural branch of the French social security system says that since 1996, it has gathered farmers' reports of sickness potentially related to pesticides, with about 200 alerts a year."

11/26/2012 - 'ShadowHawk' police drones have already been purchased and are ready to be deployed when cops decide the moment is right. They are able to use tasers, blunt-force shotguns, and tear gas. Powerful cameras can be attached allowing them to see through the walls of your home using FLIR thermal imaging technology.

Imagine police watching everything you do inside your bedroom, watching when you leave your house, and holding the perpetual threat of violence over your head.

It is noteworthy that military drones in Afghanistan and Pakistan -- aside from killing several times more civilians than actual "terrorists" -- have caused an alarming increase in psychological disorders and anxiety, given the perpetual threat of violence over their homes.

Unlike military drones, police drones will not be equipped with missiles yet, but can be outfitted with other weaponry for "crowd control."

“Drones are coming to America to a police department near you.” That’s the initial assessment of Catherine Crump, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, who narrates part of a short video clip that explores the Shadowhawk drone and its implications for domestic law enforcement here in the U.S.

Randy McDaniel, Chief Deputy of the Montgomery County, Texas Sheriff’s Office, also weighs in on the Shadowhawk drones in the clip. “We were able to purchase a UAV to use here at the Sheriff’s Office,” McDaniel says.

Arafat, an icon of Palestinian nationalism, died in a French military hospital in November 2004, a month after suddenly falling ill.

The immediate cause of death was a stroke but the underlying reasons were unclear, leading to widespread belief in the Arab world that Israel poisoned him - a claim Israel denies.

An investigation was launched at the time but then lay dormant for years, only to be revived this northern summer when a Swiss lab detected traces of a lethal radioactive substance in biological stains on his clothing.

On Tuesday morning, after several weeks of preparations, Arafat's remains were taken from his mausoleum in the West Bank city of Ramallah and moved to a nearby mosque, according to two Palestinian officials.

At the mosque, Palestinian physicians took samples from the remains and handed them to Swiss, French and Russian experts, the officials said. According to Islam, only Muslims can handle a Muslim's remains.

The foreign experts will examine the samples in their home countries, the officials said. Earlier, samples were also taken from Arafat's bedroom, office and personal belongings, they said.

The Palestinian government had earlier covered parts of Arafat's mausoleum with a large sheet of blue tarpaulin to prevent any filming of the opening of the grave. Arafat was widely revered, and there were concerns that disturbing his grave could spark protests.

Public reaction in the West Bank was mixed.

Nidaa Younes, a Palestinian government employee, said it was unnecessary to dig up the remains.

"Our religion forbids exhuming graves. It is not nice at all to do this, even if religion permits it in some cases," she said, adding that she believes Israel was responsible for Arafat's death.

Ramallah resident Tony Abdo said he supports the exhumation, expecting it to prove that Arafat did not die a natural death.

Accusations that Arafat was poisoned revived after the Swiss laboratory, featured in a televised investigation by Arab satellite TV channel Al-Jazeera, said it discovered elevated traces of polonium-210 on clothing said to be Arafat's.

Arafat's widow, Suha, had handed over his medical file and what she said was a duffel bag of his belongings, including a fur hat and a woollen cap with some of his hair, a toothbrush, and clothing with his urine and blood stains.

The laboratory, Switzerland's Institute of Radiation Physics, said the findings were inconclusive and that Arafat's bones would have to be tested for more concrete proof. That prompted a request to have his remains exhumed, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Arafat's successor, approved the request this summer.

But the exhumation and the testing of the remains might not resolve the mystery. Polonium-210 decomposes rapidly, and some experts say it is not clear whether any remaining samples will be sufficient for testing.

For decades, Arafat was the symbol of the Palestinians' struggle for an independent state. Since returning to the Palestinian territories in the early 1990s, as part of interim peace deals with Israel, he zigzagged between leading negotiations with Israel and condoning violence as a means of obtaining political goals.

A recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for his commitment to work towards peace with Israel, Arafat later presided over the Palestinians as they waged a violent uprising against the Jewish state.

Israel accused him of ordering attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers, and confined him to his Ramallah compound. He stayed there for more than two years before falling ill. He was 75 when he died.

He was equally controversial among Palestinians, with some accusing his political circle of corruption and the pocketing of large amounts of aid. But he remains a widely revered figure in the Palestinian territories, and his portrait frequently appears in government offices and street posters.

Arafat's remains were reburied after samples were taken to be tested, Palestinian sources said.

"The operation is finished, the tomb has been resealed and the samples have been given to the French, Swiss and Russian experts," officials from the Palestinian commission investigating Arafat's death told AFP.
