Cyprus, the European Union's Dilemma

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 7 minutes ago
Cyprus, it seems, is the Cayman Islands of the Mediterranean. Russian oligarchs are said to use it to launder their money. And, for the European Union, the Cypriot-Russian connection complicates efforts to bail out the financially-stricken island. *Der Spiegel* reports that German intelligence has warned that bailing out troubled Cypriot banks may effectively amount to bailing out Russia's oligarchs and their under the table money. *Last Friday, the sun was shining in this paradise for Russians. The European Union would maintain Britain's £3billion rebate and make further cuts in overall spending in its next seven-year EU budget, according to its latest draft compromise drawn up ahead of a vital summit later this month. When I Realized David Petraeus Was a Wanker

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 30 minutes ago
The former *wunderkind* of the U.S. Army first came to my notice when he unveiled the American military's new counterinsurgency field manual, FM3-24. Petraeus had commanded a team of the best and brightest military and civilian minds to digest the lessons of two thousand years of counterinsurgency warfare and write a manual of "do's and don'ts" for American commanders already facing tough sledding in the Muslim world. It wasn't surprising that Petraeus would catapult from that assignment to become commander of coalition forces in Iraq. In a clumsy bit of sleight of hand good en... more »

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Tuesday warned against extending all the U.S. tax breaks to give Washington additional time to broker a deficit reduction deal, saying it would create more uncertainty in the markets. The Obama administration and Congress have seven weeks to deal with the so-called "fiscal cliff," a scenario in which hundreds of billions of dollars in tax hikes and spending cuts start to take effect next year, driving the economy into recession. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/14/us-usa-fiscal-geithner-idUSBRE8AC17120121114

Glenn Beck's Current Take on Secession Movement

MrArbitrage at Table Of Wisdom.com - 13 hours ago
A great deal of discussion has taken place on conservative message boards today due to the fact that Glenn Beck has referred to those in twenty states who have signed petitions to “secede” from the union. These petitions seemed peculiar to me since it would be the job of their elected state legislators to secede if such an activity were to take place, not individual citizens. As I elaborated in my video today, on his radio program Glenn has repeatedly urged listeners to move from northern states to Oklahoma and Texas. The inference is obvious. Yet, he implies that people who see se... more »
