Juan Cole: Real Petraeus Failure Was Counterinsurgency in Iraq, Afghanistan

" this idea that the U.S. can occupy these countries successfully militarily and reshape them in our image is wrong."  ( And since it - and COIN, a Vietnam discredited concept - is not only not happening but regularly failing, why would one also repeatedly suppose enabling rape of a country by destroying governments and installing designer puppets is 'accidental' ?  Obviously the 'explanation' is also propaganda. And yes, it fits 'Post Saddam Iraq : Desert Crossing' to a 'T' ; planned destruction of governments and rewriting the map of countries in oil bearing lands in the middle East - not to forget Somalia or Nigeria, for instance. Resource Wars. Poor Congo ! Poor Canada next ? And Japan has paid a price in nuclear despoliation as well. Meanwhile notes on Fukushima, Gulf of Mexico oil/cor-exit 9500 with attending widespread bad health effects, depleted uranium, dumping of nuclear waste in the oceans ; all seem to exist in another dimension as far as 'news' is concerned. )

YouTube video description [Channel - Eidos84]: "Kierkegaard and the Crisis in Religion", the first part of Walter Kaufmann's famous 1960 lecture series on existentialism. Kaufmann begins by explaining that existentialists share as many differences as other schools of philosophy. First coined to refer to the theories of Jaspers and Heidegger, existentialism became primarily associated with the work of Kierkegaard, Sartre, and Nietzsche, all radical individualists who found previous philosophical systems lacking. Kaufmann explains their writings as an answer to the modern crises in... more »

Between violence on Gaza border and Syria tensions, Israel mulls next move

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 8 minutes ago
Israel is preparing for a series of offensive measures against Hamas and the other Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip, amid continued fire from the coastal enclave into the Negev. Among other options, Israeli officials are considering such moves as targeting prominent militants as well as a systematic attack on Gaza's infrastructures and Hamas institutions in the Strip. Meanwhile, tensions persist in the Golan Heights as well, where Israeli tanks fired at Syria forces – apparently hitting two soldiers – in response to a Syrian mortar shell landing in Israeli territory. ... more »

In 1906, a young Danish lad named Peter Freuchen arrived in Greenland. Tired of city life, he had signed up to spend the winter alone in a remote meteorological research station, far from anyone — an experience he never forgot. The plan was that a sled would come every month to deliver food, coal, mail, and other supplies. Much to his dismay, the sleds never arrived, because wolves stopped them, and ate the sled dogs, every time. Freuchen had seven dogs at his cabin and, one by one, the wolves ate them all. This made it impossible for him to escape. He soon used up his coal, and... more »

Amit Ghate addresses in *Forbes *magazine the oft-heard argument that foreign immigrants will threaten or even overwhelm our culture—or American culture—or European culture—that the combined forces of demographics mean open, or even increased, immigration should be abandoned everywhere. This argument has a fundamental flaw however: Consider, to begin, the definition of culture, *viz*.: “the ideas, customs, skills, arts, etc. of a people or group, that are transferred, communicated, or passed along, as in or to succeeding generations.” Observe that our culture rests on the *ideas* ... more »

Here. A question that used to be asked about cops, before incidents of unleashed violence, illegal brutality and sexual abuse seemingly became the operating mode and not an exception, this query seems more appropriate, in terms of clowns dealing effectively with some very nasty people. Institutions, Norms, and Cooperation

A strong correlation between cooperation and membership in international institutions is not enough to establish that international institutions cause cooperation. Richard’s point is simple but should be made explicitly. After Romney threw in the towel and there was no longer any active motivation to rig the remaining vote count, that remaining vote count gives us a better estimate and view of the actual voting distribution; this in turns gives us an excellent estimate of the extent of the routine fraud, notwithstanding the sampling bias (hah!) in the late-counted votes. It reminded me of the Jesenwang (EDMJ) airstrip near Munich, Germany. Across the touchdown zone runs a road, with traffic lights. That's a solution when a plane comes in too 'flat'. Luckily this mishap ended relatively well for all participants. The pilot said that he won't fly anymore. If I were him I would immediately take off again to start making touch-and-go's to get rid of my low and slow approach attitude. John

What does South Korea Want from the US Election? the Status Quo

Robert E Kelly at Duck of Minerva - 13 hours ago
[image: Barack-Obama-with-Lee-Myu-008] *The Diplomat *asked me for a short piece on what South Korea would like from the new US president, as part of a general forum - including Shen Dingli from Fudan on China and Adam Lockyer from Sydney on Australia - on Asia and the US election. I have reprinted my essay below, and here is the whole forum. It’s worth a read, and Lockyer’s disbelief at tea party rhetoric should once again be a red flag that American global leadership is not an entitlement of our ‘exceptionalism,’ but something we must earn through seriousness and responsibility.... more »

talk me out of buying a new blackberry (if you can)

laura k at wmtc - 13 hours ago
I need a new phone. My Blackberry Curve is dying. I had to replace my original Blackberry Curve when the cursor starting jumping around (a known issue), while it was still under warranty. However, the replacement phone doesn't come with a new warranty! (That is the trend in these times of planned obsolescence.) So I have to pay off my tab contract and replace the damn thing. It seems that no one is buying Blackberrys these days, because RIM is floundering, and because iPhones and other touch-screen phones are the in thing. But I *really* like my Blackberry. Here's why. - I strongly ... more »

Re the Tucson desegregation plan

Pretty much staying away from insta-analysis re the Special Master's report, etc. Despite that, it is our victory to assert: In regards to the Tucson deseg plan - which in effect - calls for the expansion of Raza Studies to every high school and eventually throughout k-12 - that's our victory. In regards to the TUSD response... I could be wrong, but in effect, we in Tucson now have a new school board... with a majority that for all intents and purposes, is on our side. Thus, we can consider whatever the Deconcini law firm did as null and void, because it represents the old majority ... more »

If you believe the piece in today's White House propaganda bullhorn (a/k/a the *New York Times*), President Obama thinks the reason he lost the Grand Bargain last time around was because he didn't do a good enough job selling "folks" on the idea. His place in history in danger, Barry will first have a meet-up with a group of corporate fat cats to ask them what they want. He will later hit the road and do what he does best: hold rallies, and campaign, campaign, campaign. Me? Vizzini, which I have to assume is the most popular answer, but also his roles in Radio Days, DS9, Clueless, and...oh, I don't know, Shadows and Fog? The Moderns? Toy Story? Aboriginal title

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 15 hours ago
In Canadian law all lands are subject to the Crown, and this has been true since Britain acquired much of Eastern Canada from France by the *Treaty of Paris* (1763). However, the British and Canadian authorities recognized that indigenous peoples already on the lands had a prior claim, Aboriginal title, which was not extinguished by the arrival of the Europeans. This is in direct contrast to the situation in Australia where the continent was declared Terra nullius, or vacant land, and was seized from Aboriginal peoples without compensation. In consequence, all of Canada, save a secti... more »

Matt Horne writes that, when the opposition proposed a nine cents a litre tax on gasoline, John Baird rose in the house and claimed that the tax would kill Canadian families: That nine cents per litre — less than a dollar a day for the average Canadian family — could be the signal that helps flip the tables in favour of clean energy a... more »
