Aside from the reality that communications firms with contracts with the
Conservative Party of Canada made phone calls to people using the
Conservative Party of Canada's own database on Canadian voters, falsely
telling people their polling stations had been moved, the defense of the

One of the closest races in the country and one of the last to be decided,
conservative New Dem Ron Barber beat back Martha McSally 143,173 to

Black Friday, that uniquely American holy day of consumer obligation, has
always depressed the hell out of me. It is the day when people all over

A graph to illustrate the causes of the Israeli attack on Gaza

Since Israel left Gaza in 2005, to help ensure peace they were told, those
are the number of rockets fired at Israel from Gaza. Yes many were shot

rockets be fired at it and to be censured for responding?
Hamas have ramped up their attacks this year, partly to take attention off

Some cartoons that make sense of the current Israeli Hamas conflict

First, two cartoons that make the same point. However many rockets are

America And The New 'Great Game' With China

President Obama's Burma trip was about symbolism: a signal from America
that it believes the country's reforming government is moving in the right
direction.
But the last leg of his Asia tour - to Cambodia - is, in global terms, far
more important.
It's all about geo-politics and specifically, China.
A key strand to America's foreign policy for the next decade is the
'Pacific pivot'.
Mr Obama calls himself the 'Pacific President'. Why?
Because America is anxious about the increasing dominance of China.

While holding itself out as an honest broker for truce talks between Israel

the Palestinian cause — an arena where the Israelis, more experienced in
the world of the free press and democratic politics, have historically
dominated.
In Egypt’s most concerted effort to win more global public support for the

Cameron invokes wartime spirit.....Can he Invoke any Action?
Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 9 hours ago
Prime Minister David Cameron has compared efforts to cut the country’s
deficit with the fight against Adolf Hitler and Nazism.
In a speech made to the annual conference of the Confederation of British
Industry (CBI) in London yesterday, he said the UK was currently in “the
economic equivalent of war” and needed to find the “spirit” of the 1940s.
The Conservative leader used the occasion to launch an attack on Whitehall
bureaucracy and planning constraints which, he believes, are hindering
economic growth.

France eyes Middle East influence, image with Syria gamble

President Francois Hollande's decision to recognize Syria's new opposition
bloc aims to secure long-term French interests in the region and boost his
foreign policy image but, with few allies following suit, Paris may risk
isolation.
With his economic policies under harsh scrutiny at home and abroad,
Hollande's hesitant response to the Syria conflict before last week had
been unflatteringly compared to the decisive approach of predecessor
Nicolas Sarkozy when he led Western efforts to oust Libyan leader Muammar

This conjecture is rubbish of course, but it entertains. We have not
begun to systematically optimize the human brain at all. Such optimization

Where we have a serious weakness is that our education system is multiply
flawed let alone focused on the core objective of optimizing any child's

What happens instead is that the child makes choices that help or hinder
him for the balance of his life.

Today, Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a new report, Losing Humanity:
The Case Against Killer Robots, becoming the most influential NGO to date
to join an emerging call for a preemptive norm against the deployment of
autonomous weapons. The International Committee for Robot Arms Control, an

GAZA WAR – ISRAEL MAKE PEACE DEMANDS THEY KNOW HAMAS WILL NEVER ACCEPT
Damian Lataan at Telling the History of the Twenty-First Century as it Really Is - 14 hours ago
According to a report in Ha’aretz today, Israel are demanding that:
*…any cease-fire remain in place for a period of several years. Israel is
also demanding an Egyptian commitment to prevent the smuggling of weapons
from Sinai into Gaza, and that Hamas or other terror group members be kept
500 meters from the border fence. Israel also wants international assurance
that, if necessary, it would be allowed to operate over the border to foil
terror attacks.*
Israel knows that, not only would these demands be unacceptable to the
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, but that such demands would... more »

“How massive can a normal star be? Estimates made from distance,
brightness and standard solar models had given one star in the open cluster
Pismis 24 over 200 times the mass of our Sun, nearly making it the record
holder. This star is the brightest object located just above the gas front
in the above below.

Close inspection of images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, however,
have shown that Pismis 24-1 derives its brilliant luminosity not from a
single star but from three at least. Component stars would still remain

Restitution a significant factor in sentencing for fraud

McLellan, [2012] O.J. No. 5028 (C.A.):
44. However, I am satisfied that the new evidence regarding his efforts at
restitution would have resulted in a reduced sentence had the trial judge
been aware of this evidence. An offender's ability and willingness to pay
restitution is an important consideration in the sentencing of fraud and
related offences

We didn’t listen then and for thirty years ALEC has continued their reign

I saw a quote on Google the other day – where ALEC was pontificating about

DES MOINES, Iowa, 19 November 2012 (CBS/AP) – Scientists are saying that
due to climate change caused by greenhouse gases, Iowans should brace
themselves for more bad weather like the 2012 drought.
More than 130 scientists from Iowa colleges and universities said in a
statement on Monday that this year's drought is consistent with a warmer
climate predicted as part of global climate change, and more droughts can
be expected.

"It is one of Albert Einstein's most-often quoted quotes: "The most
incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is at all
comprehensible." Is the world comprehensible? Apparently at least partially
so. Consider the NASA solar eclipse atlas I referenced the other day. It is
possible to calculate the precise locations and times for solar eclipses
thousands of years into the future and past. That's comprehensibility for
you.
Of course, there are still things we do not comprehend, such as
consciousness or the development of organisms, but ... more »

The Pig & The Ghostwriter... The tale of a clairvoyant computer By Raymond
Weisling
This is a true story. It is about a funky Intel 386 computer that ran
Windows 3.1 but had some other strange capabilities that appeared over a
year or two. The setting is Solo, Central Java, Indonesia.
It started, I guess around early 1994, when I formed a map production
group, with four assistant graphics operators. I had a 386 DX computer left
over from an earlier project, but it was not used much, primarily because I
have always been a Macintosh user and Windows 3.1 was pretty awful. But... more »

has it all wrong.
*A couple of polls showing the federal NDP losing support to the Liberals
pose some pretty fundamental questions for the party and its small 'l'

path of the two big business parties or does it reinvent itself as a

state of politics and governance in this country?*

Cowards of The Age Are Stomping Gaza To Death
Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 16 hours ago
Fact: The governments in Israel and the United States are led by cowards
who only attack weak and defenceless populations as well as failed states
(Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Gaza).
Fact: Operation Pillar of Death (the Israeli version is Pillar of Cloud)
began with Israel breaking the ceasefire and assassinating the only man in
Hamas who was capable of enforcing a ceasefire. Israel delivered a clear
message with that assassination: We don't want peace.
Fact: The world is condemning Israel's irresponsible and criminal attack
on Gaza. The U.S. and Israeli governments are ... more »
GAZA WAR – BACK DOOR TO CONFRONTATION WITH IRAN?
Damian Lataan at Telling the History of the Twenty-First Century as it Really Is - 17 hours ago
I have over the years suggested a number of scenarios by which Israel might
achieve its ultimate endgame objectives of destroying its enemies,
Hezbollah and Hamas, and realising the Zionist dream of creating a Greater
Israel. All of these suggested scenarios have involved regime change in
Iran.
I have suggested that an attack on Iran might include a simultaneous attack
against Hezbollah and Hamas on the pretext of preventing either or both
from mounting retaliatory attacks against Israel; I have suggested that
Israel might find some *casus belli* to attack Hezbollah in Lebanon in t... more »

Regime Uncertainty: Some Clarifications, by Robert Higgs
Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 17 hours ago
*A major reason for businesses in a depression being unwilling to invest in
recovery is being scared or uncertain about what the government will do
next that will damage or destroy those investments.
This idea is captured in Robert Higgs’ description of “**regime uncertainty*
*”—a variant of an old idea: that the willingness of businesspeople to
invest requires a sufficiently healthy state of “business confidence,” and
the
continued and unpredictable meddling and “stimulus” of governments ravages
the requisite confidence.*
