Conservatives' War Against Women Started A Long Time Ago

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 25 minutes ago
Last night we saw how the GOP seems to have learned not a thing from the drubbing women voters gave them in the election earlier this month. But misogyny is a worldwide problem, a very old habit of conservatives and one that will take a very long time to break. Their War Against Women has helped define what conservatives are, going back a very long way in man's history. Last week we saw the uproar in the Church of England when the Church's Synod decided-- against the wishes of Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, retiring Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams and the nex... more »

These weapons of mass destruction can actually be seen and there is a mountain of evidence that these methods of weaponry actually exist. Can the meaning of The Beatles be summed up in alphabetical order while at the same time making an interesting compilation? The answer is almost. Here goes: *A Day in the Life* * * ** Start with a biggie, A Day in the Life is the pinnacle of The Beatles career, according to Ian MacDonald no less. Revolution in the Head practically invented modern rock scholarship, so we should pay obeisance. VAT May Have To Rise To 25% and Austerity till 2018, Warns IFS

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 9 hours ago
Chancellor George Osborne may have to hike VAT to 25% as he continues his battle to restore Britain's economic health, analysts have suggested. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) warned struggling Britons could face yet more spending cuts and tax rises because of weaker economic growth and lower tax revenues. If these problems are permanent, the Chancellor will need to plug a £23bn black hole if he is to meet his financial targets by 2018, according to the respected think tank. Achieving this from tax hikes alone would be "roughly equivalent to increasing the main rate of VAT f... more »

Should Rob Ford have been removed?

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 10 hours ago
As a legal matter, once the judge found the amounts were material (an arguable point to my mind), the removal was automatic. But that isn't the point -- should a judge have removed an elected Mayor where the judge carefully explained there was no corruption in the sense of personal gain or similar? The law as written didn't give the judge an option. And that law was passed by duly elected MPPs. That said, and I write as someone who did not support Rob Ford and has not supported him, it does *feel wrong* for the Mayor of Toronto to be removed on what seems like a minor technical le... more »

Microwave Heats UP Market Speed. by Jacob Bunge Nov 23, 2012 p. C1. [Excerpted] In a business where milliseconds matter, three of the largest exchange operators are looking to join the race to beam data to traders via ultrafast microwave links. CME Group Inc. and Nasdaq OMX Group are exploring a joint venture that would relay price and other market information between New York and Chicago faster than existing underground fiber-optic cables, while NYSE Euronext is offering services to capitalize on demand for speedier links between London and Frankfurt. ....ARound the world 'there... more »

Honda robot - Asimo gets scary in 2012

even though Honda seem reluctant to fix the 'cacked in his pants' glitch in Asimo's motion set, this 2012 footage of little Asimo's new ABC or *Autonomous Behavior Control* technology allows Asimo to continue moving without being controlled by an operator. It's quite amazing... ...amazing like 'more than a little scary' now.

Last Monday I went to court for the fourth time for my arrest at Occupy - and once again, the "people were not prepared" to go to trial. This was particularly infuriating because I had to get up at 5 a.m. to be sure I would arrive in New York on time, since the trains are still not recovered from Sandy (for new visitors, there are pictures of rotted trees on earlier posts such as here and here). NJ Transit replaced the railcars with shuttle busses, piloted by bewildered drivers - city dwellers who might have been exiles from another planet so little notion did they have how to nav... more »

US Disappoints World on Emissions Cuts, So Does Everyone Else

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 13 hours ago
Barack Obama's campaign pledge to act on climate change is beginning to look like electoral hot air. Despite the urging of poor countries at Doha, the U.S. is holding to Obama's old commitment of 17% emission cuts below 2005 levels by 2020 (even that still lacks Senate approval). "*'We're sleepwalking off a cliff,' Alden Meyer of the Union of Concerned Scientists said. There was a lack of ambition to confront rising world greenhouse gas emissions at the two-week meeting, the first in an OPEC nation, he said*." *"China's chief delegate Su Wei insisted that the rich should extend th... more »

At long last, readers push back against Dowd!

*MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2012* *Dumbest known life-form on earth:* Yesterday morning, Maureen Dowd’s column was very dumb—dumb even by her own standards. As usual, Dowd was banging on “Barry.” Here’s how the nonsense began: DOWD (11/25/12): *The two electrifying rookies exploded onto the scene with killer smiles, undeniable gifts, an affinity for superheroes, poise beyond their years and the ability to play at top form when it’s all on the line.*Both stay so calm under pressure that they have evoked comparisons to Cool Hand Luke. First to let everyone know, I am doing much better than I was the last few days. Those who know me personally, know that I suffer from bad sinuses and am very prone to getting sinus infections. It seems that I do get these infections once or twice a year, especially when the weather changes dramatically from hot to cold and from cold to hot! And right now, it is very cold here in central Canada! I have avoided seeking medical help in terms of "antibiotics" to fight these sinus infections for the last few years, and instead have relied on natural cures and upping my vitamin supple... more »

Thanksgiving Week Recap

Southern Man at Southern Man - 13 hours ago
Random images and events from Thanksgiving Week 2012. With Teen Daughter camped out with Southern Parents there was a lot of commuting between The Land and the Ancestral Manor. Monday and Tuesday were work days so the "weekend" didn't really pick up until Wednesday and to further complicate matters Southern Man has been down with some kind of winter malady so Wednesday kicked off with a visit to his doctor, who prescribed about a hundred dollars worth of pills and liquids and inhalers. But that evening Southern Man and Teen Daughter ran around a bit and she saw a movie in which Sout... more »

MANUFACTURED CONSENT: Manufacturing Susan Rice!

*MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2012* *What David Gregory said:* What is “manufactured consent?” The term originated with Walter Lippmann, then ran through a 1988 book by Noam Chomsky and Ed Herman. To see the way the practice works, consider what David Gregory said on yesterday’s Meet the Press. This is the last morning on which we plan to feature the attacks on Susan Rice. But below, you can see what Gregory said about Rice on yesterday morning’s program. Last Wednesday, Rice made a public statement defending the way she described the attacks on the Benghazi consulate. A Master of Tax Avoidance

Greg Mankiw at Greg Mankiw's Blog - 14 hours ago
Warren Buffett has an op-ed in today's NY Times on one of his most popular themes: The rich should pay more in taxes. At first blush, his position seems noble: A rich guy says that people like him should pay more to support the commonweal. But on closer examination, one realizes that Mr Buffett never mentions doing anything to eliminate the tax-avoidance strategies that he uses most aggressively. In particular: 1. His company Berkshire Hathaway never pays a dividend but instead retains all earnings. So the return on this investment is entirely in the form of capital gains. By n... more »

Labour's immigration myths

Not a sheep at Not a sheep - 14 hours ago
' The myth peddled by Blair's acolytes – that high levels of immigration generated significant economic benefits for the existing UK population – was demolished in 2008 by a House of Lords select committee. It concluded: "We do not support the general claims that net immigration is indispensable to fill labour and skills shortages. Such claims are analytically weak and provide insufficient reason for promoting net immigration." Reinforcing this point, the government's Migration Advisory Committee recently confirmed that immigrants do "displace" some British workers – ie, take thei... more »

Many worlds vs positivism and symmetries

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 14 hours ago
About a dozen of TRF articles mention Hugh Everett and his "many-worlds interpretation" of quantum mechanics. Exactly three months ago, I showed that "many worlds" don't exist as long as one uses the standard rules of quantum mechanics to answer the very question about their existence. If we use the same rules to answer the question "Do many worlds exist?" as we use for answering questions about the electrons' spins and other questions "obviously accessible to the experiments", the answer of quantum mechanics is a resounding No. There can't be any "multiple worlds". After all, the... more »

Taking Harper Down

Michael Harris -- who I quote a lot these days -- has uncovered Stephen Harper's recipe for governing Canada: 3 cups of fear; 3 cups of information burial; 3 cups of ad hominem vilification; 1 cup of voter suppression; 1 cup of contempt of Parliament; a generous sprinkling of never-say-die lawsuits; 4 cloves of broken promises; 12 large sycophants to be found at Planning and Priorities (if you can find out where the committee meets); a dash of softness wrapped in a blue sweater (reserve this close to a piano until needed); a dollop of public money to pay for torrents of self-cong... more »

Ezra Klein-- A Veritable William Jennings Bryan

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 15 hours ago
Yesterday, we saw how overrun Congress is with very rich people and how the lack of empathy by rich politicians for normal working families is a policy disaster going into the Grand Bargain. Not many people think of Ezra Klein as some kind of raging populist. In the crucial election of 1896, are you * sure* where Ezra would have stood? The disgust he expressed on *The Last Word* Friday (above) and in his *Washington Post* column over the weekend for the super-wealthy trying to undermine Social Security, gave me some hope that maybe, just maybe, enough Democratic corporate shills co... more »
