Military past and present protest Portugal's 2013 budget
An estimated five thousand veterans and servicemen marched through the
streets of Lisbon, to show their anger at planned austerity measures.
Portugal is already feeling the strain and the budget for next year
approved by the centre-right government will bring even more cuts and tax
rises in an effort to save 5.3 billion euros.
“The 2013 budget proposes we make higher payments for medical care,
although the service is worse. We pay more for less,” said Sergeant Jose
Leitao.

Polish police repell ultranationalists
Warsaw has seen police fire rubber bullets and tear gas at right-wingers as
Poland marked its independence day. Several policemen were injured.
Polish authorities say two police officers were injured Sunday and several
extremists detained for throwing stones and metal objects. The
right-wingers disturbed one of the many marches which took place in Warsaw
to mark 94 years since Poland regained sovereignty at the close of WWI
after over 120 years of foreign rule.
"Today public life is poisoned by excessive rows," Polish President
Bronislaw Komorowski had said at the beginning of the ... more »

David Frum Says It Isn't The Democraphics Killing The GOP-- It's The Message
I hope you watched the video above. Most of it-- as you might expect if you
know anything about Joe Scarborough and his Villager guests-- is worthless,
but the David Frum parts are extremely valuable. They stand out like a sore
thumb from the rest of the drivel. For me the key segments were Frum trying
to get to the bottom of what's wrong with the GOP today. "Mitt Romney's
message," he tried explaining to a barely sentient Scarborough, "is 'I am
going to take away Medicare from everybody under 55; I'm going to cut

Greece Passes 2013 Austerity Budget
Greek lawmakers have approved the country's 2013 austerity budget involving
fresh spending cuts.
The budget passed by a 167-128 vote in the 300-member Parliament.
It came days after a separate bill of deep spending cuts and tax hikes for
the next two years squeaked through with a narrow majority following severe
disagreements among the three parties in the governing coalition.

* Are you a sheep or a madman? *
"It is often said that if Christ were to come to the world now he would be
crucified again. This is not quite true. The world has changed; it now

what an original and deep fundamental relation I have to the comic, and
this will be of use for me in illuminating Christianity." - Søren

The fruits of our labors
Mulling over the results of this election, one thing is clear to me. Our
biggest obstacle to future progress is gerrymandering. From D.C. to the
statehouses Democrats actually won a majority of votes that is not
reflected in the number of seats they hold. This the poison fruit of the
2010 debacle that allowed Republicans to take over statehouses just when
the new districts were being drawn.
Nonetheless, we did well with the new Democratic House in D.C.:
Come January, women and minorities for the first time in U.S. history will

Tea Party Played Key Role in Romney's Defeat

Shell-shocked Republicans are continuing to do a post-mortem on why Mitt
Romney's bid for the White House was a flop. But in trying to understand
their defeat, they really need to point the finger of blame at a section of
the GOP itself: the Tea Party.
Since it sprang into action a few years ago, the Tea Party has prided
itself on "re-energizing" the GOP base and returning the party to its core
principles. And indeed, the Tea Party did inspire a lot of Conservatives

2014 primaries might be dangerous for corrupt corporate shills
Blue America worked with a lot of different organizations over the last

GOP threatens more gridlock
While the pundits and lesser politicians play point the finger of blame for
Tuesday's resounding loss at the polls, didn't take long for our D.C.

compromise they mean cave into their every demand.
Speaker Boehner sternly warned his troops, the rules of the game have

the tax rate on the top income earners is still very much off his table.

The Year the Town Hall Shrank
BBC Four's The Year the Town Hall Shrank is hard-hitting, powerful stuff.
As a profile of Stoke-on-Trent, it is unflinching and uncomfortable. The
fate befalling those on the end of austerity is deeply upsetting. As a
critique of the ideologically-motivated cuts imposed on councils by central
government, it's damning. Yet for all that, there is something unsettling
about *The Year* beyond the tough subject matter. And last Thursday night's
episode, which prominently featured the BNP, exemplifies it.

Thousands of Kuwaitis protest against voting changes
Tens of thousands of Kuwaitis packed into a square opposite parliament on
Sunday in a peaceful opposition-led rally against new voting rules.
Recent demonstrations against the electoral changes, ordered by Kuwait's
ruler last month ahead of a poll on December 1, have led to clashes between
protesters and police as marches spread out of the areas usually designated

Could General Petraeus Become Inmate Petraeus?
The United States military takes adultery very seriously. In fact it
treats adultery as a criminal offence warranting imprisonment.
When CIA director David Petraeus resigned, he pointedly stated that his
affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, began after he left the U.S.
Army.
Under *no* circumstances did the affair occur while Petraeus was still an
active duty general. Certainly not during the time Petraeus and Broadwell
spent together in Afghanistan. And not during the time she spent with him
working on his biography.
This isn't over yet, not by a long shot.

A missile strike wounded four Israeli troops on jeep patrol along the Gaza

Canada's First Remembrance Day
“We will remember” is a call heard at many military memorial ceremonies and
parades, but it was only in 1931 that Ottawa passed an act permanently
fixing Canada’s national military memorial day to the anniversary of
Armistice Day, Nov. 11, 1918, marking the end of the Great War. The day was
named Remembrance Day. The same act moved Thanksgiving to October from its
traditional November date, still adhered to by our American neighbours.
