Military past and present protest Portugal's 2013 budget

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 18 seconds ago
An estimated five thousand veterans and servicemen marched through the streets of Lisbon, to show their anger at planned austerity measures. Portugal is already feeling the strain and the budget for next year approved by the centre-right government will bring even more cuts and tax rises in an effort to save 5.3 billion euros. “The 2013 budget proposes we make higher payments for medical care, although the service is worse. We pay more for less,” said Sergeant Jose Leitao. http://www.euronews.com/2012/11/10/military-past-and-present-protest-portugal-s-2013-budget/

Polish police repell ultranationalists

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 2 minutes ago
Warsaw has seen police fire rubber bullets and tear gas at right-wingers as Poland marked its independence day. Several policemen were injured. Polish authorities say two police officers were injured Sunday and several extremists detained for throwing stones and metal objects. The right-wingers disturbed one of the many marches which took place in Warsaw to mark 94 years since Poland regained sovereignty at the close of WWI after over 120 years of foreign rule. "Today public life is poisoned by excessive rows," Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski had said at the beginning of the ... more »

David Frum Says It Isn't The Democraphics Killing The GOP-- It's The Message

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 12 minutes ago
I hope you watched the video above. Most of it-- as you might expect if you know anything about Joe Scarborough and his Villager guests-- is worthless, but the David Frum parts are extremely valuable. They stand out like a sore thumb from the rest of the drivel. For me the key segments were Frum trying to get to the bottom of what's wrong with the GOP today. "Mitt Romney's message," he tried explaining to a barely sentient Scarborough, "is 'I am going to take away Medicare from everybody under 55; I'm going to cut Medicaid for everybody by about a third, and I'm going to do that t... more »

Mulling over the results of this election, one thing is clear to me. Our biggest obstacle to future progress is gerrymandering. From D.C. to the statehouses Democrats actually won a majority of votes that is not reflected in the number of seats they hold. This the poison fruit of the 2010 debacle that allowed Republicans to take over statehouses just when the new districts were being drawn. But in trying to understand their defeat, they really need to point the finger of blame at a section of the GOP itself: the Tea Party. Since it sprang into action a few years ago, the Tea Party has prided itself on "re-energizing" the GOP base and returning the party to its core principles. And indeed, the Tea Party did inspire a lot of Conservatives who had been dismayed by the likes of big-spending George W. Bush (even though the Tea Party only ... more »

The Year the Town Hall Shrank

BBC Four's The Year the Town Hall Shrank is hard-hitting, powerful stuff. As a profile of Stoke-on-Trent, it is unflinching and uncomfortable. The fate befalling those on the end of austerity is deeply upsetting. As a critique of the ideologically-motivated cuts imposed on councils by central government, it's damning. Yet for all that, there is something unsettling about *The Year* beyond the tough subject matter. And last Thursday night's episode, which prominently featured the BNP, exemplifies it. Hundreds of British troops could be deployed to intervene in Syria if the country descends into chaos. General Sir David Richards, the UK's top soldier, said contingency plans were in place for a 'very limited' military response if the humanitarian situation worsened. His admission is the most serious warning yet that Britain could deploy forces to the warzone. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2231390/UK-s-soldier-warns-British-troops-deployed-Syria-warzone.html

Could General Petraeus Become Inmate Petraeus?

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 10 hours ago
The United States military takes adultery very seriously. In fact it treats adultery as a criminal offence warranting imprisonment. When CIA director David Petraeus resigned, he pointedly stated that his affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, began after he left the U.S. Army. Under *no* circumstances did the affair occur while Petraeus was still an active duty general. Certainly not during the time Petraeus and Broadwell spent together in Afghanistan. And not during the time she spent with him working on his biography. This isn't over yet, not by a long shot.
