US Shale Gas Drives Up Coal Exports - Tyndall Manchester Research
A report by researchers at Tyndall Manchester has concluded that whilst the US is burning less coal due to shale gas production, millions of tonnes of unused coal are being exported to the UK, Europe and Asia. As a result, the emissions benefits of switching fuels are overstated.( Looking at this report after reading The Hostmen - The World's First Fuel Cartel gives a whole new perspective on who is representing what - and why. I noticed this site while scratching my head over the mission statement for Cefas, while somewhat impressed by thoughts of the historical research database available on ocean currents and conditions as recorded for centuries by the Royal Navy. The historic voyage of the Beagle to the Galapagos included such recording ; standard logs even then which assist in fixing position. The Royals profit quite handsomely from 'climate change adaptation' while mucking with global energy markets. )

European Space Agency approves Ariane 5 rocket upgrade, Yeah! We are Made of Money in Europe
European Space Agency (Esa) member states have resolved key issues at their
ministerial council and agreed a 10.1bn euro (£8.1bn) programme of
activities.
The big decisions included approval for an upgrade to Europe's Ariane 5
rocket in parallel with design work on a replacement for the early 2020s.
Backing was also given to the project to provide the propulsion unit for
Nasa's new manned capsule, Orion.

Republican Whoremonger Outpolls Romney
Lance Gilman is a happy camper. He was just elected County Commissioner in
Storey County, Nevada-- and elected by a wide margin. It's a tiny county--
population 4,010, horseshoed between Washoe (Reno) and Carson. Storey was
the only county in the state to vote to legalize marijuana in the 2006
referendum. Earlier this month, President Obama got 920 votes there (40%)
and Romney got 1,321 votes (57%). Of Nevada's 17 counties, Storey was the
5th best-performing for the president. Gilman, a grandfather, did better
than Romney, winning 62% of the vote.

Australia quarantines farm to contain H7 bird flu outbreak
Australia's first outbreak of a highly pathogenic bird flu virus in 15
years should be contained by a cull of 50,000 chickens, authorities said on
Friday, although they do not know what caused the case at an egg farm in
New South Wales state.
The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) said all chickens at the
property in Maitland, 160 km (100 miles) north of Sydney, will be destroyed
after the H7 virus was detected last week.

Gaza truce could pave way for new US peace push
*Egypt's* The US success in helping to broker a Gaza ceasefire shows it
cannot turn its back on the Middle East and should perhaps seize the moment
to try to rekindle peace talks, experts said.
With Egypt's new Islamist President Mohamed Morsi emerging strengthened
from his first big test, having shown he can act as a broker between Israel
and the Palestinians, the time could be right for a new American push, they
said.

ADHD Medication for prisoners so they have yet another excuse for their Behaviour
Treating a common behavioural disorder in convicted criminals could
dramatically reduce the risk of them re-offending, new research suggests.
One of the biggest studies of its kind has found that people diagnosed with
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at least 30% less
likely to commit crime if they are given medication.
The researchers now say that if prisoners suffering from ADHD were
identified and treated, the impact on the criminal justice system could be
significant.

UK Renters Warned About 'Rogue' Letting Agents
The lettings sector needs more regulation, the Royal Institution of

of so-called rogue agents.
Those renting properties are at risk of being taken advantage of by
unscrupulous agents amid "a total lack of effective regulation", RICS
warned after surveying 2,000 people.
The organisation said that renters had come to expect "worryingly low
standards", with two thirds of those questioned saying they had not been
given an inventory when they moved into a rented property in the last two

Cameron To Insist On Austerity In EU Budget
David Cameron travels to Brussels later insisting that austerity being
enforced around Europe is reflected in the EU's budget.
He will join leaders from all 27 countries at a special summit to set the
European Union's spending limits from 2014 to 2020.
It is a complex and deeply divisive process, with the UK balking at the
European Commission's opening gambit - to increase the overall spending
ceiling to a maximum €1,091,000,000,000.
This was flatly rejected by Britain and nearly all the net contributors to
the European Union.

Legalise drugs–the debate
In response to the decision by Coloradan and Washingtonian voters to
legalise marijuana, the Obama administration admits that marijuana
legalization can do miracles.
According to the federal government, the price of pot will plummet
following legalization while remaining above the black-market level. Pot
will be dangerously cheap yet dangerously expensive at the same time.
Someone’s obviously smoking something, and it’s not just the good people of
Colorado and Washington.
Should marijuana be legalised all across the board? Should all states? How
about all drugs?

Our management kindly let us office drones decamp at 2pm this afternoon on
condition that all our work was done. The bell rang, and as if by magic
everyone's work was done. (In truth, we didn't have exactly a full
complement onsite when the bell rang.) So I've had plenty of time to think
of some appropriate way to celebrate Thanksgiving here among the

Can't They See How This Ends?
The U.S. military has really fallen for this remote-controlled mayhem
business. The latest and greatest thing is the miniature, one-way drone.
It has a range of between 6 to 10-miles, it can loiter over the target from
10 to 30-minutes, and then it ends its service life by flying into the
ground, detonating a couple of pounds of high explosive. Some can be
controlled by a ground operator sitting in the safety of a cozy bunker.
Others can use GPS guidance. Others might even be robotic, flying to the
designated spot and waiting until it detects something with the parameters ... more »

he said: “The U.S. government has a technology called a printing press (or,

Sciences sent a a 14-page letter to Arne Duncan warning him against high
stakes use of value-added in RTTT.
That's okay, you're not alone--many of us are puzzled. One thing is for
sure, however--when teachers band together and get a couple of good lawyers
to shine a penetrating light on this Oz-inspired scheme and the wreckage it
is causing, that's when this house of cards will come tumbling down.

Thoughts for the Brain - bespoke reality
Every moral philosophy presupposes a sociology, so said Alasdair MacIntyre.
I’ve never read him but there’s no doubt this is true. In order to appraise
anything in our society you have to understand what this society is and
what point you are appraising it from. Even if you don’t accept the results
of Marx’s study of political economy you have to accept he was on the right
track.
We are lucky in Britain. Even at this eleventh hour we still have politics
and public life constructed around the class point of view. There has been

Drifting Ever Faster Away from 350
The figures are out for 2011 and they're record-breaking. Last year we
managed to drive atmospheric CO2 levels to 390 ppm.
*The amount of heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached a
record 390.9 parts per million (ppm) in 2011, according to a report
released Tuesday by the UN's World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
That's a 40 percent increase over levels in 1750, before humans began
burning fossil fuels in earnest.*

Canada Genuflects To Israel! ( I Seriously Want To Barf!)
As a Canadian citizen, I am truly disgusted every time I see the Jewish
controlled Stephen Harper government in Ottawa bend over and kiss their

criminals and traitors completely sell their souls to Jewish interests,
well above and beyond the interests of the people of Canada who actually

Killer Dengue fever outbreak reaches Britain after holidaymakers spread it across Europe
An outbreak of dengue fever has reached Britain after holidaymakers helped
spread the killer disease across Europe.
Although hundreds of Britons contract dengue fever every year, the majority
do so in tropical countries such as Thailand and India.
But with more than 1,300 people infected with the mosquito-borne disease in
the island of Madeira, Europe is experiencing its first sustained
transmission of dengue fever since the 1920s.

'This is gonna be one for the history books': Curiosity team set to reveal 'major discovery' in Martian soil... just not yet

Red Planet - but scientists are keeping quiet about what it is.
The finding was made by the six-wheeled rover's Sample Analysis at Mars

rover touched down.
SAM is Curiosity's on-board chemistry lab and is able to take a sample of
Martian rock, soil or air and find out what it is made of.
Most importantly, it is capable of identifying organic compounds - carbon
containing substances that could indicate life.

Wiretapping the web: New technology could allow governments to listen in on your Skype conversations
New eavesdropping technology could allow government agencies to 'silently

Until now, so called voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services have been
difficult for police to tap into, because of the way they send information

The services convert analogue audio signals into digital data packets,
which are then sent in a way that is costly and complex for third parties

Life on other planets....
The search for extraterrestrial life is on full swing. We’ve sent probes
just about everywhere and every nearby planet and moon. Even as we read
these words our quest for life on other planets even microbial life is
being done on a now dead planet, Mars.
Mars has great lessons for those would be planetologists and planetary

Two newly submitted studies verify 41 new transiting planets in 20 star

Israeli 'settlements'
I keep hearing that Israel is expanding settlements in the West Bank, but
is that the case? this blogger says no:
1. The last time a settlement was set up was in 1997. The last time an
unofficial outpost was set up which then became a settlement was in 2003.
Almost a decade.
2. There is no settlement activity in Area A.
3. There is very little settlement activity in Area B, though in a number
of places along the edges of Area B there are some local cases of
overstepping the line. Which means that for all the failure of the Oslo
process, Israel is still respecting its transfer of co... more »

US 'launched Flame cyber attack on Sarkozy's office'
A French news magazine has accused the US government of hacking into the
office of Nicolas Sarkozy in the final weeks of his presidency of France.
L'Express said a cyber war agency whose job it is to detect and prevent
hacking had found a "powerful worm" in the computers of the Elysee Palace.
The palace has since confirmed a big cyber attack did take place.
The US embassy in Paris "categorically denied" the US had been involved in
any cyber attack on the French government

World powers want new nuclear talks with Iran quickly
Six world powers are committed to holding a new round of nuclear
negotiations with Iran as soon as possible, said a spokesman for the
European Union's foreign policy chief, who represents the six in talks with
Iran.
Officials from the six countries - China, Russia, the United States,
Britain, France and Germany - met in Brussels on Wednesday to plan for
future contact with Iran, in an effort to make progress in the decade-long
rift over Tehran's atomic work.

FDA took 684 days to warn meningitis-linked firm: files
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration took 684 days to issue a warning
letter after uncovering serious issues at the pharmacy at the center of the
deadly U.S. meningitis outbreak, newly released documents showed.
The New England Compounding Center (NECC) chastised the FDA for taking so
long, telling the agency its response time was nearly 18 months longer than
the FDA's average response, according to letters released by a Freedom of

Carbon tax percolates through U.S. political system – Washington state representative introduces Managed Carbon Price Act

20 November 2012
WASHINGTON (McClatchy Newspapers) – The president downplays it. Insiders
insist it doesn’t stand a chance. Yet as negotiations between the Obama
administration and Congress take form over a deal on taxes and budgets, the
idea of a carbon tax is discussed with greater frequency.
Oddly enough, there’s no high-profile leader out there championing a carbon
tax, yet it’s the subject of reports, conferences and a flurry of maneuvers
by groups for and against it.

Bye, Bye Miss American Pie
By Capt. Fogg
Indications are that the Mayans were right and that 2012 is indeed the end
of an era, not because of some change in politics or religion and not
because of anything cosmic or tectonic, but because a piece of America as
we knew it has died. An America, exuberant in itself, proud, forward
looking, confident. Hostess bakeries died this week and not because of
mismanagement but because of what America has become: timorous, ashamed of
what it loves and afraid of being provincial. Our sweet land of phony
authenticity. Of thee I sing.

The Curiosity rover's SAM device, Sample Analysis at Mars, found something

First pictures of dead dolphins with gunshot wounds show that humans are to blame for spate of mysterious deaths on U.S. Gulf Coast
They are the horrific pictures which prove that a mysterious spate of
dolphin deaths along the northern Gulf Coast of America have nothing to do
with natural causes.
This bottlenose dolphin was found dead along the coastline of Mississippi
after being shot. When investigators examined the mammal, they found a
bullet inside its body.
It is one of a number of dolphins which have washed ashore along the
northern Gulf Coast over the past few months.

Read Stuff, You Should
Happy Birthday to Stan Musial, 92.
The good stuff:
1. Excellent article on women in politics and the remaining barriers by
Kate Sheppard, but it isn't quite true that Heidi Heitkamp is the "first
woman to represent North Dakota in Congress, ever." First woman elected to
do so, but when Quentin Burdick died in 1992, Jocelyn Burdick served for
two months.
2. Really good point about unintended consequences and Senate reform from
Sarah Binder. Something I need to keep in mind more often: what we "see"
happening in the Senate may not reveal to us the full options that both
sides have... more »
WotW: Summarize the Web with One Mouse Click
We've all been there – you go to a blog/website/article and you're excited
to read it. Then you see how long it is. Your brain does some quick mental
math:
length of article x time spent reading / reward level = read? Typically
this equation amounts to the common phrase, "Too Long, Didn't Read."
(TLDR). All because an article is either too long – or appears too long due
to poor web formatting – we would rather skip it than benefit from whatever
information might be contained therein. We can't blame ourselves too much
though because we're busy and there are too many things to read. W... more »
Wisconsin Republicans Already Working To Prevent Citizens From Voting
No doubt you heard Paul Ryan trying to deflect blame from his policy agenda
for the gigantic GOP losses this month by blaming "urban people" for voting.
Yes, lots of Blacks, Latinos and educated people voted, always a negative
for Republicans-- although, with the sole exception of the old slaveholding
states, Democrats also swept the nation's suburbs, something that doesn't
fit in to Ryan's racist narrative. Nonetheless, homestate ally, Governor
Scott Walker, is following up on Ryan's grousing by trying-- once again--
to disenfranchise those pesky "urban voters."
Walker would like... more »
