New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has campaigned to ban food and drinks loaded with salt, fat and sugar in the city but he has no problems feeding it to Sandy victims. Then Anthony Weiner tried... but he was Anthony Weiner, not Alan Grayson-- and what a disaster that turned out to be! Who’s running the show?

After a weekend of turbulence over who runs the Labour Party—the leader?—the unions?—the caucus?—the wanna-be leader and his gang of white ants?—the *Herald* headline this morning suggests oil has been poured on the leadership waters roughed up by new rules making it easier to trigger a leadership challenge. “Cunliffe backs Shearer as leadership crisis calms” says the headline. Clearly however, the headline writer hadn’t read the story itself, which quoted from (and linked to) State Radio’s *Morning Report* on which new hostilities broke out on this morning. Swastika and fascist salutes: Rise of neo-Nazis in austerity-ravaged Greece

The rise of a neo-Nazi camp in austerity-ravaged Greece is disturbing. A majority of the Athenians, apparently, are open about their allegiance to the Golden Dawn Party, with a symbol which has an uncanny resemblance to the swastika. Fascist salutes by MPs and black-shirted vigilantes attacking immigrants are common in Greece. After a spate of attacks by black-clad men on motorbikes, immigrants are afraid of venturing in the streets at night. Significantly, immigrant street vendors from Asia and Africa are major targets. http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/13423248-swastika-a... more »

If you were a car-mad boy growing up in the 80s, chances are you quite fancied a Ferrari Testarossa. Alas, unless you were stinking rich, you would never see one outside of car shows or American telly. That is, unless, you regularly frequented an amusement arcade. In 1986, Sega's *OutRun* made a massive splash in the coin-op racing scene. The sit-down cabinet's faux-Ferrari modelling stood out. *SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2012* *Part 1—The pleasures of Rice and Petraeus:* In this morning’s Washington Post, two tired old kill-joys have come to the fore. The kill-joys appear, side by side, right at the top of the Post’s op-ed page. In our hard-copy paper, these are the headlines which sit atop their pitiful buzz-killing columns: *Headlines atop the Post’s op-ed page:* Stop scapegoating Susan Rice A modern witch hunt The first kill-joy is Robert Kagan, no liberal. He wants the scapegoating of Rice to stop. The second kill-joy is David Ignatius. He challenges the sexual witch hun... more »

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 14 hours ago
At least five people were killed when a grenade tore through a minibus in Nairobi's Somali-dominated Eastleigh neighborhood on Sunday, a Reuters witness and police said. "I saw bodies ripped apart," the Reuters photographer said. The force of the explosion tore apart the vehicle's roof and seats and shattered the window of a nearby cafe. Two other cars were damaged, the photographer said. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/18/us-kenya-blast-idUSBRE8AH09Q20121118

And just to add to the over-stimulation, it's election day in Honduras today. Liberalism In Crisis

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 15 hours ago
As the Liberal leadership races heat up -- in both Ottawa and Ontario -- those who consider themselves liberals should read what Chris Hedges wrotefollowing the American election : The ineffectiveness of the liberal class, as I saw in the former Yugoslavia and as was true in Weimar Germany, perpetuates a dangerous political paralysis. The longer the paralysis continues, the longer systems of power are unable to address the suffering and grievances of the masses, the more the formal mechanisms of power are reviled. The liberal establishment’s inability to defy corporate power, to s... more »

Chris Hedges on the emptiness of Obama's Re-Election

thwap at thwap's schoolyard - 15 hours ago
Not so much emptiness, I suppose, as a different moral travesty from what a Mitt Romney victory would have been: Liberals, by voting for Barack Obama, betrayed the core values they use to define themselves—the rule of law, the safeguarding of civil liberties, the protection of unions, the preservation of social welfare programs, environmental accords, financial regulation, a defiance of unjust war and torture, and the abolition of drone wars. The liberal class clung desperately during the long nightmare of this political campaign to one or two issues, such as protecting a woman’s ri... more »

The Economist's Ma the Bumbler article has generated a storm in Taiwan, with international media coverage by AFP: "How can a 'bumbler' get a doctorate from Harvard?" said Wang Chien-shien, president of the Control Yuan, a branch of Taiwan's government in charge of monitoring the others, according to the Taipei-based daily China Times Sunday. Ma, who received his doctorate in juridical sciences at Harvard in the early 1980s, was the target of a "biased" report, Finance Minister Chang Sheng-ford was quoted as saying by the Central News Agency. The elections are over, but 2014 elections will begin soon. It never ends, does it? The battle to strengthen the Democratic majority in the Senate will hinge in no small part on a victory in Kentucky to defeat Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. It’s time to Ditch Mitch! Democratic challengers are being discussed and we should hear more in January of 2013 as challengers file early to get a head start on this critical 2014 race. Questions About "Rockets From Gaza"

Big Dan at Big Dan's Big Blog - 16 hours ago
(Note: these are just questions I have. I never fully believe any major news story anymore, at least immediately, when it is reported in real time by the western/U.S. mainstream media. We have been DUPED too many times to believe them, without major personal research from varying sources. Usually we find out the REAL STORY much later. The more initial questions I have, the more I think the "official story" may not be true. Now we get into "OFFICIAL STORY", which is the story told by officials to protect officials. OFFICIALS are Big Media and politicians. We KNOW "officials" are ... more »

in mississauga: a people's history of the war of 1812

laura k at wmtc - 16 hours ago
The Harper Government has spent nearly $30 million promoting The War of 1812, all part of its overall effort to re-brand Canada as a "warrior nation". History is always worth remembering, but who tells the story? What's emphasized and what's forgotten? Was Canadian identity forged on the battlefields of 1812? Did farmers and other working people support the war, or resist it? Who profited from the war? Come hear a different perspective: "A People's History of the War of 1812," an antidote to Harper's glorification of war, featuring John Bell. Progressive people living in Etobicoke... more »

Japan Finds Radioactivity in More Foods From California The California Radiation Report By Andrew Kishner www.NuclearCrimes.org August 23, 2012http://www.nuclearcrimes.org/California-Radiation.pdf [excerpted] It is downright frightening to know that in one instance an orange grown in 2011 in California was 'hotter' than oranges grown there in the 1960s when hydrogen nuclear bombs were exploding in open-air at testing sites closer to the U.S. than Fukushima! It is even scarier that pistachios grown in the U.S. were the 'hottest' item in an 'isotopic test' selection of supermarket it... more »

The U.S. has a flat tax (in effect)

Greg Mankiw at Greg Mankiw's Blog - 17 hours ago
The Congressional Budget Office has a new study of effective federal marginal tax rates for low and moderate income workers (those below 450 percent of the poverty line). The study looks at the effects of income taxes, payroll taxes, and SNAP (the program formerly known as Food Stamps). The bottom line is that the average household now faces an effective marginal tax rate of 30 percent. In 2014, after various temporary tax provisions have expired and the newly passed health insurance subsidies go into effect, the average effective marginal tax rate will rise to 35 percent.
