Running around like the chicken with the head cut off these days.
Here's what I'm reading on the GO Bus and the subway:
*The Generalissimo: Chiang Kai-shek and the Struggle for Modern China* by
Jay Taylor. It's fairly recent (2009) and makes use of a lot of recently
released archival material to construct a sympathetic portrait of China's
KMT leader during the mid-20th Century. It encompasses his entire life, so
there'll be a lot of stuff about Taiwan which will be brand new to me.

Some Conservatives Voice Petraeus Conspiracy Theories
It's the soap opera that shocked official Washington and ensnared a
previously squeaky clean CIA director at a time when he was supposed to
play a role in the accounting for a possible security misstep in Libya.
We don't know all the facts of why the FBI started investigating David
Petraeus' biographer and how it ultimately led to his resignation.
But a growing number of conservative commentators contend that the
resignation of former CIA Director David Petraeus is more than simple
amends made for a personal wrong.

Spain suspends home evictions for most needy
Spain approved measures on Thursday to help the most needy families facing
eviction, a growing problem in the recession-bound nation highlighted last
week by the suicide of a woman whose home bailiffs came to seize.
The government said it would suspend evictions for two years for vulnerable
homeowners who can no longer pay back debt, including those with small
children, the disabled and long-term unemployed.
"This is an emergency response to mitigate the effects of the worst of the
economic crisis," Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said at
a weekly press conference.

War looms in chaotic Gaza
A Hamas rocket killed three Israelis north of the Gaza Strip on Thursday,
drawing the first blood from Israel as the Palestinian death toll rose to
15 in a military showdown lurching closer to all-out war and an invasion of
the enclave.
On the second day of an assault Israel said might last many days and
culminate in a ground attack, its warplanes bombed targets in and around
Gaza city, where tall buildings trembled.
Plumes of smoke and dust furled into a sky laced with the vapor trails of
outgoing rockets.

Drought is expected to increase in frequency and severity in the future as
a result of climate change, mainly as a consequence of decreases in
regional precipitation but also because of increasing evaporation driven by
global warming1–3. Previous assessments of historic changes in drought over

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 78,000 to a seasonally

BBC Palestine journalist cradles dead baby son after Israeli rocket attack on Gaza
Gently cradling the tiny body of his young son to his chest, Jihad
Masharawi's devastation is heartbreaking as tears stream down his face.
The BBC Arabic picture editor's 11-month-old son Omar was injured in Gaza
by an Israeli airstrike yesterday and despite being rushed to a local
hopsital, he was pronounced dead.
Israeli aircraft, tanks and naval gunboats pounded the Gaza Strip as Israel
targeted the Islamic militants - the attack resulted in the death of eleven
Palestinians including young Omar.

Violent clashes as austerity protests grip EU cities
Clashes in Lisbon left nearly 50 people hurt while in Spain at least 70
were injured and some 140 arrests were made.
Wednesday's action was co-ordinated by the European Trade Union

that austerity was not working.
"It's increasing inequalities, it's increasing the social instability in
society and it's not resolving the economic crisis," she said.

What the Fiscal Cliff Means for the Middle Class
Now that the election is over, it seems like all the politicians and
pundits can talk about is the so-called "fiscal cliff." But the chatter
around the fiscal cliff is deeply weird, so in this post I will explain
what it is and what the issues involved mean for the middle class.
Just what is the fiscal cliff? It is the combination of spending cuts and
tax increases set to take place on January 1 based on several different
laws. Estimates of the consequences run as high as $800 billion next year,
or 5.2% of the country's $15.29 trillion gross domestic product in 2011.

The case against accelerated reader

The case against accelerated reader (AR) is even stronger than the Jan
Lacina’s article states (“Accelerated Reader: Teaching kids the 'game' of

There is no clear evidence that AR works, even in the short term. AR has
four components: It provides access to books, provides time to read,
quizzes children on what they read, and awards prizes for performance on
the quizzes. As Dean Lacina notes, it is well-established that providing
books and time to read are effective, but AR research does not show that

Relationship Between Telomere Length and Mortality Investigated

in the late stage that shortened telomere length is associated with an

With our developing capacity to replace tissue with stem cells that turn

James Holmes hospitalized
The suspect in the Aurora movie theater mass slaying has been hospitalized
with an undisclosed illness or injury serious enough that his defense team
asked that a scheduled pre-trial hearing be postponed.
Defense attorneys for James Holmes asked for an emergency hearing late
Wednesday afternoon saying their client’s condition made it impossible for
him to appear in court Thursday.
Public defender Tamara Brady offered no details, citing Holmes’ medical and

A wave of anti-austerity anger is sweeping across Europe with general
strikes in Spain and Portugal and walkouts in Greece and Italy - grounding
flights, closing schools and shutting down transport.
Millions of workers have been taking part in the dozens of co-ordinated
protests in a so-called European Day of Action and Solidarity against
spending cuts and tax hikes.
In Portugal, violent clashes took place between activists and police
officers in Lisbon, and one woman was seen being repeatedly struck with a
baton.

Rat Massacre: Galapagos Islands To Kill Millions
Ecuador is preparing to massacre more than 180 million rats as it seeks to
eradicate them from the Galapagos Islands.
A helicopter will drop nearly 22 tons of specially designed poisonous bait
on Pinzon Island, an uninhabited island in the archipelago 600 miles off
the coast of Ecuador and the nearby Plaza Sur islet.
It is the second stage in an offensive that aims to kill all non-native
rodents across the 19 islands that helped inspire Charles Darwin's theory
of evolution by 2020.

Another uplifting report from Benjamin. The Maiona group, or Red Dragon,
“links 59 countries plus 2700 tribes mostly in the South Pacific Region”,
and is working with the White Dragons to move the planet toward peace and a
harmonic world. I’ve never heard of this group before, but I’m sure there
are many so-called “secret” societies which we never (and maybe will never)
hear of.
Of course, apply Higher Discernment to Ben’s articles.

Resurrecting The Peace Ship: Abie Nathan - In Memory
Abie Nathan was a volunteer pilot in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War who became
an Israeli peace activist. He is viewed as one of the greatest Israelis. He
thought his work for peace and equal co-existence was done in 1993, when
the Oslo Peace Accords were signed. But 9/11 (a Mossad-CIA job) made war a
permanent feature in the lives of Israelis and Palestinians for the
foreseeable future. 9/11 also brought America into the picture which
pleased Israel's extremist rulers.
The most recent aggression against Gaza by the Israeli military is a
reminder that war is easy and peace is hard. But ... more »

President Obama and the Iron Law of Climate Change
You could not ask for a more clear expression of the iron law of climate
change and its implications that that which was given by President Obama
today in a press conference (emphasis added):
There’s no doubt that for us to take on climate change in a serious way
would involve making some tough political choices, and you know,
understandably, I think the American people right now have been so focused
and will continue to be focused on our economy and jobs and growth that,
you know,* if the message is somehow we’re going to ignore jobs and growth
simply to address climate change, ... more »
