Have you entered the mother's bracelet giveaway yet? Lentil soup is straight out of my childhood. Running around like the chicken with the head cut off these days. Here's what I'm reading on the GO Bus and the subway: *The Generalissimo: Chiang Kai-shek and the Struggle for Modern China* by Jay Taylor. It's fairly recent (2009) and makes use of a lot of recently released archival material to construct a sympathetic portrait of China's KMT leader during the mid-20th Century. It encompasses his entire life, so there'll be a lot of stuff about Taiwan which will be brand new to me. Chiang Kai-shek is generally not well treated by history. He was seen as a ruthless, colourless autocr... more »

Some Conservatives Voice Petraeus Conspiracy Theories

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 12 minutes ago
It's the soap opera that shocked official Washington and ensnared a previously squeaky clean CIA director at a time when he was supposed to play a role in the accounting for a possible security misstep in Libya. We don't know all the facts of why the FBI started investigating David Petraeus' biographer and how it ultimately led to his resignation. But a growing number of conservative commentators contend that the resignation of former CIA Director David Petraeus is more than simple amends made for a personal wrong. http://news.yahoo.com/start-voice-petraeus-affair-conspiracy-theory-... more »

Spain suspends home evictions for most needy

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 18 minutes ago
Spain approved measures on Thursday to help the most needy families facing eviction, a growing problem in the recession-bound nation highlighted last week by the suicide of a woman whose home bailiffs came to seize. The government said it would suspend evictions for two years for vulnerable homeowners who can no longer pay back debt, including those with small children, the disabled and long-term unemployed. "This is an emergency response to mitigate the effects of the worst of the economic crisis," Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said at a weekly press conference. ... more »

What the Fiscal Cliff Means for the Middle Class

Now that the election is over, it seems like all the politicians and pundits can talk about is the so-called "fiscal cliff." But the chatter around the fiscal cliff is deeply weird, so in this post I will explain what it is and what the issues involved mean for the middle class. Just what is the fiscal cliff? It is the combination of spending cuts and tax increases set to take place on January 1 based on several different laws. Estimates of the consequences run as high as $800 billion next year, or 5.2% of the country's $15.29 trillion gross domestic product in 2011. Yes, that would... more »

AR has four components: It provides access to books, provides time to read, quizzes children on what they read, and awards prizes for performance on the quizzes. Occasional magnetic field portals do open between the Sun and the Earth's magnetic fields allowing injections of energetic particles into our atmosphere and clearly responsible for things like the northern lights. Relationship Between Telomere Length and Mortality Investigated

This is an excellent study that polices up a lot of implied conjecture that has been already well accepted. The bonus however is that it is only in the late stage that shortened telomere length is associated with an increased death risk. With our developing capacity to replace tissue with stem cells that turn the biological clock back to zero, the possibility arises that extended life is completely plausible. In fact, right now it is a certainty. In the meantime slowing telomere loss is good and telomere restoration is better. Efforts in those directions are availabl... more »

Europeans Are Trying To Figure Out Why Conservatism Went Off The Rails In America

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 11 hours ago
This past weekend, journalist Paul Harris tried to help U.K. readers understand what happened in the U.S. election and why the Republican Party seems so hell-bent on self destruction. The picture he paints of the GOP doesn't look anything like mainstream European conservative parties, but like extreme right, neo-Nazi fringe groups. Reporting from Pella, Iowa he interviewed 75 year old Shirley Schutte as an example of some mighty ugly sentiments. "Obama is a Muslim," the right-wing crackpot asserted. Was she sure about that? "I am. I am not sure he even should have been there [in t... more »

Unidentified Bird flu strain hits New South Wales farm, Australia

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 12 hours ago
An unidentified strain of bird flu has been detected at a hen farm near Maitland in the Hunter Valley, prompting authorities to quarantine about 50,000 chickens. The suspected virus is not thought to be the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu that has killed 359 people worldwide in sporadic outbreaks since 2003. Nonetheless, the 50,000 hens may have to be destroyed, the NSW Department of Primary Industries said. A "first response team" of specialists from the department is on site to enforce the quarantine, while the CSIRO runs lab tests on samples of the virus, with results expected th... more »

The Maiona group, or Red Dragon, “links 59 countries plus 2700 tribes mostly in the South Pacific Region”, and is working with the White Dragons to move the planet toward peace and a harmonic world. Resurrecting The Peace Ship: Abie Nathan - In Memory

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 14 hours ago
Abie Nathan was a volunteer pilot in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War who became an Israeli peace activist. He is viewed as one of the greatest Israelis. He thought his work for peace and equal co-existence was done in 1993, when the Oslo Peace Accords were signed. But 9/11 (a Mossad-CIA job) made war a permanent feature in the lives of Israelis and Palestinians for the foreseeable future. 9/11 also brought America into the picture which pleased Israel's extremist rulers. The most recent aggression against Gaza by the Israeli military is a reminder that war is easy and peace is hard. But ... more »

You could not ask for a more clear expression of the iron law of climate change and its implications that that which was given by President Obama today in a press conference (emphasis added): There’s no doubt that for us to take on climate change in a serious way would involve making some tough political choices, and you know, understandably, I think the American people right now have been so focused and will continue to be focused on our economy and jobs and growth that, you know,* if the message is somehow we’re going to ignore jobs and growth simply to address climate change, ... more »
