Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 1 minute ago
Flood water covered swathes of central and northern Italy today after the region was battered by torrential rain. Devastating storms caused huge damage at the weekend, washing out roads and isolating towns in southern Tuscany, where four people died as a result of flooding. Europeans Are Trying To Figure Out Why Conservatism Went Off The Rails In America

This past weekend, journalist Paul Harris tried to help U.K. readers understand what happened in the U.S. election and why the Republican Party seems so hell-bent on self destruction. The picture he paints of the GOP doesn't look anything like mainstream European conservative parties, but like extreme right, neo-Nazi fringe groups. Reporting from Pella, Iowa he interviewed 75 year old Shirley Schutte as an example of some mighty ugly sentiments. "Obama is a Muslim," the right-wing crackpot asserted. Was she sure about that? But 9/11 (a Mossad-CIA job) made war a permanent feature in the lives of Israelis and Palestinians for the foreseeable future. 9/11 also brought America into the picture which pleased Israel's extremist rulers. Now, of course there's a case that can be made that it's Good For the Nation, but leave that aside (there's also a case that it's very much Good For the Press, but again put that aside). (By *American Zen*'s Mike Flannigan, on loan from Ari and Welcome Back to Pottersville.) It hasn't been decided yet whether I'm a figment of Robert Crawford's imagination or his alter ego or vice versa. Either way, it could safely be said that I'm the author of *American Zen*, the story of an epic road trip that took place during a week of my and my friends' lives exactly four years ago. As I'd subsequently described our trip up and down the northern eastern seaboard across four different states (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York), it was like a "Flomax/Viagra/... more »

The Tories are aiming to destroy the basis for working class intervention in public life and they are aiming to do it in one term. They must be fought. He wants to reform Britain's education system yet he is cutting back on the people supposed to be delivering his reforms. The usual faux-liberal suspects have all been herded into the White House Veal Pen for their periodic branding. The sounds of suckling are echoing through the blogosphere. I wrote before the election that so-called progressive and labor groups working hard for the president's re-election were going to give him a brief honeymoon before launching a concerted effort to hold his feet to the fire on taxing the rich and protecting Social Security and other traditional New Deal stuff. Oh, dear. I expected them to be cowed -- but to turn a negotiating session into a pep rally for Dear Le... more »

The closest rogue planet to Earth has been spotted by astronomers.

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 13 hours ago
It's the closest one to Earth that's been found - but it's still 100 light years away from us. That's a long way! Astronomers think the rogue planet - given the catchy name of CFBDSIR2149-0403 - is about 50-120 million years old. http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/20324541

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 13 hours ago
Syrian authorities ordered airstrikes for a third consecutive day close to the tense Turkish border on Wednesday, and said a French decision to recognize and consider arming a newly formed Syrian rebel coalition was an “immoral” act “encouraging the destruction of Syria.” http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/15/world/middleeast/syria-war-developments.html?pagewanted=all

Check out her poignant video about recent deaths along the US/Mexico-- in honor of the Day of the Dead. Eight days after Border Patrol agent Nicholas Ivie was killed by friendly fire on the U.S.- Mexican border, a sixteen year-old boy was shot seven times through the border fence by a Border Patrol agent. Claire McCaskill: Too funny. First power meeting with E Warren and D Fischer? In the Senators Only Women's bathroom. Gonna need a bigger bathroom. McCaskill, who was first elected in 2006, may or may not realize it but the women's bathroom near the Senate floor goes back only to 1993; before that female Senators had to walk down a floor. Twenty women still isn't anywhere near parity, but it's getting a lot closer. It's still amazing how long it took for women to start winning seats in the Senate at all; as recently as the first Senate serving with George H.W. Bush, there were only ... more »

Did Warren Really Win?

*We know who lost*: "Senator Scott *Brown’s largest financial supporters* are a *who’s who of finance and business*, while his political challenger, Elizabeth Warren, has drawn support primarily from universities, law firms, and left-leaning political groups, according to an analysis of federal filings. Brown’s support from the financial industry — about $5.5 million, or 28 percent of the $19.5 million he has raised in total — also appears to *reflect how much the sector* *does **not** want* Warren in the Senate." * **Related*: Who Bought Brown's Election? *The U.S. Senate's Chief... more »

U.S. commander says Benghazi attacks linked to al Qaeda in Maghreb

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 14 hours ago
The head of the U.S. military command in Africa said on Wednesday that some of the militants involved in the attack in Benghazi that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya were linked to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). "There is a growing network of violent extremist organizations and it appears to me very likely that some of the terrorists who participated in the attack in Benghazi have at least some linkages to AQIM," General Carter Ham, head of Africa Command, told reporters in Paris. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/14/us-mali-usa-idUSBRE8AD0WF20121114

Breaking: Journalist contradicts Princeton professor!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 14 hours ago
*WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2012* *Was Candidate Romney the most dishonest ever:* Last week, we discussed a rather strange op-ed column by Princeton professor Kevin Kruse. See THE DAILY HOWLER, 11/6/12. In our view, Kruse made some rather strange claims about our post-war elections. At the end of his piece, he voiced this judgment about Candidate Romney: KRUSE (11/6/12): PolitiFact has chronicled 19 “pants on fire” lies by Mr. Romney and 7 by Mr. Obama since 2007, but Mr. Romney’s whoppers have been qualitatively far worse: the “apology tour,” the “government takeover of health care,... more »

Anthony Watts' television channel

*Al Gore has a new TV competitor* Last year, Al Gore's Climate Parody Day spent millions of dollars and attracted a few thousand viewers in the whole world who watched the boring show for a few minutes in average. Because the man behind the world's most viewed climate website, Watts Up With That (150 million views or so), apparently thinks that it was a success (sorry for this comment, Anthony, but I just couldn't resist), he wants to attract a few percent of Gore's audience and that's why he has established a new television channel to compete with Current TV, Climate Parody Day... more »

22 Signs That Voter Fraud Is Wildly Out Of Control And The Election Was A Sham

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 14 hours ago
After what we have seen this November, how is any American ever supposed to trust the integrity of our elections ever again? There were over 70,000 reports of voting problems on election day, and there are numerous eyewitnesses that claim that they saw voting machines change votes for one candidate to another candidate right in front of their eyes. In several of the swing states there were counties where the number of registered voters exceeded the total voting age population by a very wide margin. How in the world does that happen? Some of the vote totals that were reported in some ... more »

Police who tackled and tasered a Brazilian student on LSD could face further action after a damning report on the man's death. An Australian coroner said officers acted like schoolboys in "Lord Of The Flies" when they crash-tackled Roberto Laudisio Curti and shocked him with 50,000 volts. New South Wales coroner Mary Jerram said she could not determine what caused the 21-year-old's death but added that it was "impossible to believe that he would have died but for the actions of police". http://news.sky.com/story/1011336/taser-death-police-branded-thuggish
