Portugal & Poland 'Cannot Afford' Eurovision and Have Pulled Out
Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 25 minutes ago
The Eurovision song contest appears to have become the latest victim of the
economic crisis with the news that two countries have been forced to pull
out of next year’s event - because they cannot afford to enter.
Poland and Portugal will not take part in the competition in Malmo in
Sweden next May.
Portugal, which was given a £63bn bailout by Brussels last year, has only
missed the annual event three times in the last 48 years.

Overpass collapse kills 11 in Bangladesh; protests erupt
Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 1 hour ago
At least 11 people were killed and scores others injured when an
under-construction overpass collapsed in southeastern Bangladesh, police
said Sunday.
"We've recovered 11 bodies so far, and the death toll may rise further as
the rescuers are yet to remove the rubble of the girders of the flyover,
which collapsed Saturday night," said Mirazuddin Ahmed, deputy commissioner
of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
Police said about 20 people remained trapped after three concrete beams of
the overpass -- each 42 meters long -- collapsed in Bangladesh's
second-largest city.

Egypt Judges Condemn President's 'Attack'
Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 1 hour ago
Egyptian judges have condemned a decree granting President Mohamed Morsi
sweeping new powers, as angry protesters clashed with police for a second
day.
A handful of rock-throwing activists battled riot police in the streets
near Tahrir Square, where several thousand protesters massed on Friday to
demonstrate against the decree, which effectively prevents Mr Morsi's
decisions from being challenged.
The move also removed powers from the judiciary and allows the president to
take any measures to protect national security.

dreams - centring the spiral - free planet

A country without care jumps at the chance to see the doctor

The doctor is in at Angelitos Felices

New SARS-related virus has now infected six, killed two in the Middle East
Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 14 hours ago
A new coronavirus from the same family as SARS has now infected six people
in the Middle East, two of whom have died, the World Health Organization
announced Friday.
The UN health agency said four new cases have been confirmed, in addition
to a previous patient from Saudi Arabia, who died in June, and another one
from Qatar still undergoing treatment in the United Kingdom.
Three of the new cases are Saudis — and two are family members who lived
together, the WHO said in a news release. One died and the other is

Health Authorities Try To Identify Woman Exposed To Rabies
Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 14 hours ago
Health authorities are posting an urgent notice as they try to trace a
woman bitten by a cat in Chaplin, Connecticut about two weeks ago. The cat
has since died, and a necropsy found it suffered from rabies,
Director Robert Miller of the Eastern Highlands Health District says the
woman was driving on South Bear Hill Road, with at least one child in her
vehicle. It was after 5 p.m. around November 8th, but because it was dark,
the witness did not have more of a description than that. The car was
travelling between Cross Road and Canada Lane.

What Mattered This Week?
Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 15 hours ago
A quiet week in domestic politics, so I suppose I'll go with the ceasefire
in Gaza. No, it almost certainly didn't mean that a real solution to the
underlying situation is at hand, but anytime people avoid a disastrous
escalation it's probably a good thing, no?
I don't really have much for the didn't matter side of things, but I
suppose I can mention the idea of eliminating the Ames Straw Poll, which I
wrote about yesterday over at Greg's place.
But I was traveling, and so I may have missed all sorts of things. What do
you have? What do you think mattered this week?
Iran accuses U.S. of 'illegal and provocative acts' in Gulf and warns of 'adverse consequences'

Iran yesterday accused the U.S. Navy of carrying out 'illegal and

In letters to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council,
Iran's UN ambassador Mohammad Khazaee said the Navy repeatedly violated the
country's airspace.
He mentioned flights over the coastal areas of Bushehr on seven occasions
in October, and most recently a U.S. drone flight on November 1 which
ignored radio warnings and penetrated Iranian airspace.

In the strongest condemnation of EU institutions ever issued by a British

Keith Watermelon at THROUGH THE SCARY DOOR - 19 hours ago
Caught the scum of the Met tweeting this earlier. Note the use of the
#freetommyrobinson hashtag. Kind of gives the game away. Unsurprisingly,
they've since deleted the tweet. ACAB.
[edit] The offending tweet has now re-appeared in its entirety.
Beware! Road suprises ahead!!!

Would You?

If someone cheated at cards and you know they cheated, would you allow them
to keep your money? Would you allow them to keep your money and then play
against them at a later date under the same conditions?
Would you allow someone who wants you dead to make your health care
decisions for you? Would you allow someone who wants you dead and someone
who is a stupid ignoramus to make your life or death decisions for you?
Would you tolerate it if someone stole from you and the police were
bought-off or corrupt in some other way and simply refused to investigate?

Jesse Jackson, Jr.-- Why The Case Of Selective Persecution?
DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 20 hours ago
Several Republican congressmen are extremely concerned with House Armed
Services Chairman Buck McKeon's immense and unreported gambling debts to
Organized Crime figure-- and possible agent of at least one foreign power--
Sheldon Adelson. More than a few Democrats are concerned that their party
caucus is about to elevate one of its most corrupt members, Joe Crowley
(R-NY), to an important leadership position. Crowley, who was recently let
off the hook for the House Ethics Committee-- along with Republican Tom
Price in an apparent tit-for-tat deal-- after he was caught trading votes ... more »

McMaher and CBC's Terry Milewski report on this week's release of internal
emails between an alarmed Elections Canada and a stonewalling Con Party
lawyer Arthur Hamilton.
Turns out EC officials' were reporting on a robocall "scam" in a "dozen
ridings" across "at least 6 provinces", starting *three days before the
last election.*
Four months later Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand was still publicly
referring to them as "crank calls".
Milewski :
"Ever since the scandal broke, the Conservative line has been it was just a
rogue operation in one riding, in Guelph of course, and tha... more »
The Phony Populist
Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 20 hours ago
Yesterday, Don Gilmour published a must read piece in the* Toronto Star*.
His target was the phony populist politician. Using Toronto Mayor Rob Ford,
Calgary mayor -- and Alberta premier -- Ralph Klein and former Washington
Mayor Marion Barry as salient examples, Gilmour argued that, with populist
politicians, image and substance are diametrically opposed:
One of the ironies **of a populist politician is that he is often a triumph
of image over truth, the very thing he was elected to counter.
Before Ralph Klein was elected mayor of Calgary in 1980, he was a portly,
rumpled tele... more »
The 234-bit gene that turns an ape into a man
Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 21 hours ago
You must have wondered why some of us are human while others are just apes.
As I learned from an article that was sent to me by Peter F., all the
difference may boil down to 117 base pairs on the 20th chromosome.
Study: Single Gene, Plus Some "Junk" DNA Turned Ape Ancestors Into Modern
Man (Daily Tech)
Recall that all the information needed to create and run an organism is
digitally stored in the DNA molecule, a sequence of base pairs. Each base
pair is either AT or TA or CG or GC (the first and second letter correspond
to the 1st strand and the 2nd strand of the double helix and ... more »
