'Parliament is sovereign': Grayling warns Strasbourg in row over prisoner votes as ex-minister says UK should leave European court
Justice Secretary Chris Grayling today raised the prospect of Britain
defying the European Court of Human Rights over giving prisoners the vote.
Speaking in the Commons he repeatedly stressed the UK Parliament is
‘sovereign’ and it was up to MPs to decide whether or not to comply with
rulings from Strasbourg.
Even if fines were imposed on Britain, MPs could decide not to pay them.
Despite Attorney General Dominic Grieve warning Cabinet ministers they
could not take a stand against a European court’s controversial diktat, Mr
Grayling insisted: ‘Ultimately this Parliament is sovereign... more »

An Indian radiographer has been sacked from his job at a cancer hospital
after six years following a string of complaints that he could not speak
clear English.

Nice work. Steal an election. Steal a majority. Dominate committees to

The NDP accused the Conservatives of using a House of Commons committee to
whitewash the auditor general's scathing indictment of the government's

The NDP levelled the charge in a dissenting opinion to the public accounts

"The NDP remains deeply concerned that this study did not allow
parliamentarians to shed light and complete the inquiry on this very
important matter," says the three-page dissenting opinion.

David Cecil: Uganda Halts British Producer's Gay Trial
A British theatre producer, facing two years in jail for staging a play
featuring a homosexual, has had his case postponed again by a Ugandan court.
The postponement comes at a time when the Ugandan parliament is about to
debate a bill allowing the death penalty for "aggravated homosexuality".
David Cecil, 34, was arrested in September after refusing to allow
government censors to review the play The River and the Mountain which was
performed in August.
He was charged with "disobeying lawful orders".

Cornhusk dolls and flawed development plans

The cornhusk doll kids of La Pintada are part of life in Copan Ruinas.
La Pintada is about five kilometres away - an hour’s walk, one more poor

One group of women make cornhusk dolls. They’re cute, brightly coloured and
obviously take some skill, but are a little boring.
And the marketing plan is deeply flawed. The children of La Pintada walk

Not that warm on this holiday so I don't have many Thanksgiving traditions.
Not even around the food. I have a few side dish favorites but don't really

Cameron 'not happy' as EU budget negotiations begin
The British prime minister is understood to be unhappy with the compromise
offered by European Council President Herman van Rompuy, because it would
involve cuts to Britain's 3.6bn euro annual rebate. Speaking to the House

Britain's rebate.
Herman van Rompuy is caught in a balancing act between several wealth EU
nations, who want a freeze or a reduction to the annual EU budget, and a
bloc of poorer nations who would like an increase.

three-bedroom home he needs to sell before he can relocate for a new job.
The drywall is new, as are the appliances. The only problem? Location.
Montalbano's home is in Tom's River, New Jersey, which was pummeled by last
month's Sandy megastorm.
"A lot of people are scared to come back to the water," says Montalbano.
"Back in the day, everybody wanted to come to the shore. Now it's a mess

Euro zone faces deepest downturn since early 2009
The euro zone economy is on course for its weakest quarter since the dark
days of early 2009, according to business surveys that showed companies
toiling against shrinking order books in November.
Service sector firms like banks and hotels that comprise the bulk of the
economy fared particularly badly this month, and laid off staff at a faster
pace.
While the monthly rate of decline that manufacturers reported eased far
more than economists anticipated, Markit's latest Purchasing Managers'
Indexes (PMIs) pointed to little change overall for a recession-hit euro
zone this month.

Sarkozy in court over campaign
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived at a Bordeaux court
Thursday for questioning in a probe involving illegal campaign donations,
CNN affiliate BFM-TV said.
The investigation of the former leader has largely centered around whether
L'Oreal cosmetics heiress Liliane Bettencourt and her staff illegally

Israeli military touts successes after conflict
The relentless pace of the Israeli airstrike on Gaza gave the country's
military time to make a significant dent in the offensive capability of
Hamas, the Israeli military said.
Over the eight day conflict, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) looked to
deplete some of the estimated 12,000 rockets Hamas has in its arsenal and
destroy tunnels that are said to be used to smuggle weapons.
"We are very satisfied with the achievements that we have had in this

Proposed EU Budget Rise 'Quite Wrong': David Cameron
The Prime Minister said he would be fighting "very hard" for a good deal
for British taxpayers and to keep the rebate negotiated by Margaret
Thatcher in the 1980s.
"These are very important negotiations. Clearly at a time when we are
making difficult decisions at home over public spending it would be quite
wrong - it is quite wrong - for there to be proposals for this increased
extra spending in the EU," he said.
Mr Cameron is calling for a real-terms freeze, or even a cut, in the budget

The BBC's definition of a ceasefire 'holding' is instructive
The BBC report in a piece headed 'Gaza crisis: Israel-Hamas ceasefire

'A ceasefire between Israel and the Islamist Hamas movement that runs the

Israel radio said some rockets had been fired from Gaza, but there was no

So the ceasefire is holding because Israel hasn't responded to Hamas
rockets. However the firing of Hamas rockets does not break the ceasefire!

Rebels say Syria hospital strike kills 40
Syrian rebels accused government forces of bombing a hospital in the

Ralib al-Omar, a leader of the Yusif al-Asma rebel group, said the attack
targeted the Dar al-Shifa Hospital and that the dead included two nurses.
The Local Coordination Committees of Syria, a network of opposition

Australia released draft revisions to tax laws on Thursday, which it said
were designed to stop big firms, including the local arm of Google, from

The move is in line with a push by Britain and Germany who want the G20

Secret courts plan is left in tatters after Lords reject closed hearings by crushing majority
Peers voted by crushing majorities for fundamental changes to the Justice
and Security Bill, which would allow civil cases involving national
security to be conducted in secret. By margins of over 100 votes, peers
voted to remove ministers' exclusive right to apply for secret hearings and
to give judges ultimate discretion in deciding whether or not they should
be held behind closed doors.

Sudan makes arrests after foiled "sabotage attempt:" state-linked media
Sudan's security services thwarted a "sabotage attempt" led by opposition
forces and arrested a number of civilian and military figures in connection
with the incident early on Thursday, state-linked media reported.
Witnesses told Reuters they saw tanks and armored vehicles moving down a
major street in central Khartoum, the capital, around midnight. A Reuters
reporter said security in the area appeared normal in the early morning.
Sudan, ruled by President Omar Hassan al-Bashir since he seized power in a
1989 coup, has avoided the massive political upheaval that has convulsed

EU budget summit offers hours of hard bargaining.....Hands up, if you think this is another waste of time!
EU leaders are to begin talks on the bloc's seven-year budget, with many of
them calling for cuts in line with the savings they are making nationally.
Countries that rely heavily on EU funding, including Poland and its
ex-communist neighbours, want current spending levels maintained or raised.
The UK and some other net contributors say cuts have to be made. At stake
are 973bn euros (£782.5bn; $1,245bn).

rocket in parallel with design work on a replacement for the early 2020s.
Backing was also given to the project to provide the propulsion unit for

Republican Whoremonger Outpolls Romney
Lance Gilman is a happy camper. He was just elected County Commissioner in
Storey County, Nevada-- and elected by a wide margin. It's a tiny county--
population 4,010, horseshoed between Washoe (Reno) and Carson. Storey was
the only county in the state to vote to legalize marijuana in the 2006
referendum. Earlier this month, President Obama got 920 votes there (40%)
and Romney got 1,321 votes (57%). Of Nevada's 17 counties, Storey was the
5th best-performing for the president. Gilman, a grandfather, did better
than Romney, winning 62% of the vote.

Australia quarantines farm to contain H7 bird flu outbreak
Australia's first outbreak of a highly pathogenic bird flu virus in 15
years should be contained by a cull of 50,000 chickens, authorities said on
Friday, although they do not know what caused the case at an egg farm in
New South Wales state.
The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) said all chickens at the
property in Maitland, 160 km (100 miles) north of Sydney, will be destroyed
after the H7 virus was detected last week.

Gaza truce could pave way for new US peace push
*Egypt's* The US success in helping to broker a Gaza ceasefire shows it
cannot turn its back on the Middle East and should perhaps seize the moment
to try to rekindle peace talks, experts said.
With Egypt's new Islamist President Mohamed Morsi emerging strengthened
from his first big test, having shown he can act as a broker between Israel
and the Palestinians, the time could be right for a new American push, they
said.

ADHD Medication for prisoners so they have yet another excuse for their Behaviour
Treating a common behavioural disorder in convicted criminals could
dramatically reduce the risk of them re-offending, new research suggests.
One of the biggest studies of its kind has found that people diagnosed with
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at least 30% less
likely to commit crime if they are given medication.
The researchers now say that if prisoners suffering from ADHD were
identified and treated, the impact on the criminal justice system could be
significant.

UK Renters Warned About 'Rogue' Letting Agents
The lettings sector needs more regulation, the Royal Institution of
Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has said, after revealing a rise in the number
of so-called rogue agents.
Those renting properties are at risk of being taken advantage of by
unscrupulous agents amid "a total lack of effective regulation", RICS
warned after surveying 2,000 people.
The organisation said that renters had come to expect "worryingly low
standards", with two thirds of those questioned saying they had not been
given an inventory when they moved into a rented property in the last two
years.

Cameron To Insist On Austerity In EU Budget
David Cameron travels to Brussels later insisting that austerity being
enforced around Europe is reflected in the EU's budget.
He will join leaders from all 27 countries at a special summit to set the
European Union's spending limits from 2014 to 2020.
It is a complex and deeply divisive process, with the UK balking at the
European Commission's opening gambit - to increase the overall spending
ceiling to a maximum €1,091,000,000,000.
This was flatly rejected by Britain and nearly all the net contributors to
the European Union.

Legalise drugs–the debate
In response to the decision by Coloradan and Washingtonian voters to
legalise marijuana, the Obama administration admits that marijuana
legalization can do miracles.
According to the federal government, the price of pot will plummet
following legalization while remaining above the black-market level. Pot
will be dangerously cheap yet dangerously expensive at the same time.
Someone’s obviously smoking something, and it’s not just the good people of
Colorado and Washington.
Should marijuana be legalised all across the board? Should all states? How
about all drugs?

Thanksgiving comes but once a year -- thank goodness!
*The Black Friday rush begins . . .*
Jack Ziegler, in this week's *New Yorker*
*by Ken*
Our management kindly let us office drones decamp at 2pm this afternoon on
condition that all our work was done. The bell rang, and as if by magic
everyone's work was done. (In truth, we didn't have exactly a full
complement onsite when the bell rang.) So I've had plenty of time to think
of some appropriate way to celebrate Thanksgiving here among the
takers-not-makers class.
Don't ask me why, but most of the day my brain kept cycling back to Jim
Hightower's newly posted column. Naturally no asp... more »
Can't They See How This Ends?
The U.S. military has really fallen for this remote-controlled mayhem
business. The latest and greatest thing is the miniature, one-way drone.
It has a range of between 6 to 10-miles, it can loiter over the target from
10 to 30-minutes, and then it ends its service life by flying into the
ground, detonating a couple of pounds of high explosive. Some can be
controlled by a ground operator sitting in the safety of a cozy bunker.
Others can use GPS guidance. Others might even be robotic, flying to the
designated spot and waiting until it detects something with the parameters ... more »
GAZA WAR – INVASION CANCELLED OR JUST POSTPONED?
The agreement that came into effect just a few hours is not an accord for
peace but merely a ceasefire. It is unlikely to be permanent and further
talks are unlikely to yield much for the Palestinians. Meanwhile, the
Israeli troops amassed at the Gaza Strip’s borders continue their build-up
and they remain on alert ready to move a moments notice as Netanyahu warns “of
possible additional military action if the cease-fire fails to lead to
long-term security”. What Netanyahu’s idea of ‘long-term security’ might be
is anyone’s guess. It may well be that all Netanyahu wants is a bit more... more »
GO NAD!
British fetus fascist and lying MP Nadine Dorries is the first contestant
voted out of a reality show.
The MP for Mid Bedfordshire said she decided to take part in the reality TV
show to get her controversial views on issues such as abortion across to
the wider public. But if that was the case, she appears not to have won
them over.
Her unpopularity with the public was clearly evident in viewers' repeatedly
voting for her to undergo bushtucker trials, eating a range of gruesome
delicacies including a camel's toe, an ostrich's anus and some cattle

IS IT POSSIBLE THAT KARL ROVE ACTUALLY FAILED TO DELIVER OHIO TO ROMNEY BECAUSE OF *ANONYMOUS*? I THINK SO ...AND I SURE HOPE SO!
*THE MOVIE "V" IS UPLIFTING ...UNTIL WE BEGIN TO ADMIT THAT IT IS JUST A

By David L Griscom
Back on November 8th, I was convinced that Karl Rove failed to deliver Ohio
to Romney because his original vote-flipping software failed to account for
an unexpectedly high percentage of Obama voters in Ohio, and his televised
late-night insistence that Romney would still win would have lead to
wide-spread suspicion if he had rigged it.
However, it turns out that the election system in Ohio on Election Nigh... more »
