ANGRY CHINESE PROTESTERS OVERTURN POLICE VANS
Thousands
of residents have protested in a southeastern Chinese city after
a traffic accident, smashing police cars and overturning three police
vans,
police and residents said Sunday.
The reason why the protest sparked in Fuan city in Fujian province was
unclear. One resident said people got angry because police and
paramedics
took nearly an hour to arrive to help the injured, while a Hong
Kong-based
human rights group said it was to do with corruption.

Liberalism In Crisis
As the Liberal leadership races heat up -- in both Ottawa and Ontario --
those who consider themselves liberals should read what Chris Hedges wrotefollowing the American election
:
The ineffectiveness of the liberal class, as I saw in the former Yugoslavia
and as was true in Weimar Germany, perpetuates a dangerous political

are unable to address the suffering and grievances of the masses, the more
the formal mechanisms of power are reviled. The liberal establishment’s

Not so much emptiness, I suppose, as a different moral travesty from what a

Liberals, by voting for Barack Obama, betrayed the core values they use to

protection of unions, the preservation of social welfare programs,
environmental accords, financial regulation, a defiance of unjust war and
torture, and the abolition of drone wars. The liberal class clung

marginal tax rates for low and moderate income workers (those below 450
percent of the poverty line). The study looks at the effects of income
taxes, payroll taxes, and SNAP (the program formerly known as Food

effective marginal tax rate of 30 percent. In 2014, after various
temporary tax provisions have expired and the newly passed health insurance
subsidies go into effect, the average effective marginal tax rate will rise
to 35 percent.

Miliband Warns Of 'Sleepwalk' Towards EU Exit
Ed Miliband has called for major reforms of the European Union and a
"hard-headed" approach taken by Britain, ahead of a crunch EU budget summit
this week.
The Labour leader - who last month joined forces with Tory rebels to defeat
the Government over its strategy to freeze the EU budget - said Labour must
not ignore the legitimate concerns of eurosceptics.
He said reform was needed on the budget, on immigration rules, state aid
restrictions and austerity measures - but declined to promise a referendum
on the UK's future within the EU.

EU Will give UK until Friday to change Prisoner Voting Ban
MPs are to be given another say on whether to give prisoners the vote, as
the deadline for Britain to comply with a European ruling on the
controversial issue looms.
The UK's current blanket ban on prisoners voting has been judged as
unlawful by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and officials in
Strasbourg have given the Government until Friday to comply with the ruling.

18-month-old boy is killed in Gaza after Israel bombed more militant targets overnight
A toddler has been killed and his two brothers wounded in the latest
Israeli airstrike on Gaza, emergency services said.
The 18-month-old Palestinian boy died in a strike east of the Bureij
refugee camp in central Gaza, spokesman Adham Abu Selmiya told the AFP news
agency.
Health ministry spokesman Ashraf al Qudra said the two wounded boys, aged
four and five, were "in critical condition".

GAZA WAR – IS NETANYAHU COMMITTED TO INVADE THE GAZA STRIP?
There is some speculation that a truce between Israel and Hamas could be
negotiated to avert an invasion of the Gaza Strip by Israeli troops.
While a truce and ceasefire should be hoped for, one needs to consider the
realities of the situation from the point of view of Netanyahu.
First, Netanyahu has the blessing of US President Obama to do whatever
Netanyahu deems best for Israel – including invade. Second, Netanyahu, as
far as the Gaza is concerned, has the full support of his multi-party
cabinet, the military and the intelligence community if he decides to
invade.

My pal Roland teaches elementary school in Compton, one of L.A.'s roughest

“When winter arrives, the trees must sigh in sadness as they see their
leaves falling. They say: ‘We will never be like we were before.’ Of
course. Or still, what is the meaning of renewing oneself? The next leaves
will have their own nature, they pertain to a new summer that approaches
and which will never be like the one that passed.
Living means changing– and the seasons repeat these lessons to us every
year. Changing means going through a period of depression: we still don’t

Pillar of Death: Israhell Is The Real Savage

"Interior Minister Eli Yishai, in a moment of disturbing candor, revealed
what is for many in Netanyahu’s government the ultimate goalof its
escalating military campaign on Gaza:
“The goal of the operation is to send Gaza back to the Middle Ages. Only
then will Israel be calm for forty years.”
Now, part of Yishai’s bombast comes from the fact that, as a known racist and
head of the ultra-orthodox Shas party, he’d feel much more comfortable in
the Middle Ages himself.
However, his statement reveals an essential truth few Israeli leaders dare

It All Sounds Good Until They Shoot Back
It's no accident that our fondness for resorting to military violence is
inversely proportional to the risk that our target might inflict the same
violence on us. Put another way, we're all for whacking people so long as
they can't whack back.
How fond would Benny Netanyahu be of targeted assassinations if Hamas had
the ability to retaliate in kind?
How likely would Barack Obama be to resort to drone warfare in distant
lands if the other side had the ability to send manned drones into U.S.
airspace?
It begs the question of how we're going to cope with a "peer" adversary, a
