A country without care jumps at the chance to see the doctor
The doctor is in at Angelitos Felices
I’ve known for a while now that accessing medical care was a challenge for
the majority of Hondurans who have to rely on the public system. But it
wasn’t until I put in a couple of days as an ad-hoc translator for a U.S.
doctor in the villages this week that I fully understood that medical care
is as good as non-existent for a whole lot of people.
The doctor was part of a faith-based group out of Illinois and Tennessee
who were here to build fuel-efficient stoves in three villages around
Copan. She hadn’t planned on seeing patients, but word got ... more »

New SARS-related virus has now infected six, killed two in the Middle East
A new coronavirus from the same family as SARS has now infected six people
in the Middle East, two of whom have died, the World Health Organization
announced Friday.
The UN health agency said four new cases have been confirmed, in addition
to a previous patient from Saudi Arabia, who died in June, and another one
from Qatar still undergoing treatment in the United Kingdom.
Three of the new cases are Saudis — and two are family members who lived
together, the WHO said in a news release. One died and the other is
recovering.

Health Authorities Try To Identify Woman Exposed To Rabies
Health authorities are posting an urgent notice as they try to trace a
woman bitten by a cat in Chaplin, Connecticut about two weeks ago. The cat
has since died, and a necropsy found it suffered from rabies,
Director Robert Miller of the Eastern Highlands Health District says the
woman was driving on South Bear Hill Road, with at least one child in her
vehicle. It was after 5 p.m. around November 8th, but because it was dark,
the witness did not have more of a description than that. The car was
travelling between Cross Road and Canada Lane.

Lost City Raiders, a B movie
My newly favorite Czech TV channel, Prima Cool (which airs not only The Big

What Mattered This Week?
A quiet week in domestic politics, so I suppose I'll go with the ceasefire
in Gaza. No, it almost certainly didn't mean that a real solution to the
underlying situation is at hand, but anytime people avoid a disastrous
escalation it's probably a good thing, no?
I don't really have much for the didn't matter side of things, but I
suppose I can mention the idea of eliminating the Ames Straw Poll, which I
wrote about yesterday over at Greg's place.
But I was traveling, and so I may have missed all sorts of things. What do
you have? What do you think mattered this week?
Iran accuses U.S. of 'illegal and provocative acts' in Gulf and warns of 'adverse consequences'
Iran yesterday accused the U.S. Navy of carrying out 'illegal and
provocative acts' in the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman.
In letters to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council,
Iran's UN ambassador Mohammad Khazaee said the Navy repeatedly violated the
country's airspace.
He mentioned flights over the coastal areas of Bushehr on seven occasions
in October, and most recently a U.S. drone flight on November 1 which
ignored radio warnings and penetrated Iranian airspace.

Cameron rounds on EU leaders who quaffed £120 bottles of wine over lunch while insisting there was no room to make savings in the Brussels budget
David Cameron last night accused Brussels of existing in a ‘parallel
universe’ and ‘insulting taxpayers’ last night as EU budget talks collapsed
in acrimony.
In the strongest condemnation of EU institutions ever issued by a British
prime minister, Mr Cameron reacted with scorn after being accused of
‘blackmailing’ other leaders by demanding spending cuts and defending
Britain’s rebate.
Mr Cameron said he was astonished that EU bosses were refusing to cut ‘a

The irony of this couldn’t — to use a Gallic adjective — be more piquant.
For the truth is that France is an economic basket case that is

Spain sends Algerian criminal to live in the UK... and there's nothing we can do about it

But because he had married in the UK before his latest crime spree in
Spain, he was deported to London rather than to his native Algeria.

A handful of rock-throwing activists battled riot police in the streets

demonstrate against a decree, which effectively prevents Mr Morsi's
decisions from being challenged.
The move also removed powers from the judiciary and allows the president to

Division of Labor: Conquering the "Public"
Anthony Cody, in his Living in Dialogue blog, has recently addressed the
strategy common among "No Excuses" Reformers (NER) using a corporate
playbook to render all that is public *private*: Cody identifies "division
[as] the key weapon that reformers will be using in the years to come."
Divide and conquer has never been more powerful and subtle than it is in
the education reform debate, driven by Big Money (Bill Gate),
faux-progressives (Michelle Rhee and Arne Duncan), and tepid political
leadership (Barack Obama).
To the strategies aimed at dividing workers against themselves, the... more »

He's right:
Then, we must innovate in social policy. First, as I have written here
before, a wealth tax to fight poverty, by which the taxpayers design and
operate, like charities, methods for combating poverty. This would
incentivize the wealthy and the financially most astute to reduce poverty,
as the tax would decline as defined poverty declined. And let us abolish
imprisonment for all non-violent offences except the briefest periods, the
most egregious offenses, or the chronic recidivists. Instead of building
more prisons, let us focus on community service and rehabilitation fo... more »

Natural Society, 24 November 2012
*There have been several studies over the years that established a link
between **aspartame** consumption and cancer risk. But, these studies were
frequently criticized as being too small, only capturing a short period of
time, and otherwise not living up to strict scientific standards. A new
study, however, addresses these concerns and substantiates what the
previous ones already said: that aspartame in diet soda can increase your

Middle East nuclear talks will not occur next month: U.S.
Talks planned for next month on banning nuclear weapons in the Middle East
will not take place, the United States said on Friday, a development likely
to anger Arab states but please Israel.
The State Department announced that the mid-December conference on creating
a zone free of weapons of mass destruction, or WMD, would not occur and did
not make clear when, or whether, it would take place.
Earlier this month, diplomats told Reuters that the talks were likely to be

Couple Lose Foster Children For Being In UKIP
A couple say three foster children were taken from them because of their
membership of the UK Independence Party.
The unnamed couple, from South Yorkshire, took on a baby girl, a boy and an
older girl from an ethnic and troubled family background in September.
Less than eight weeks into the placement they were visited by a Rotherham
social worker and foster agency official who accused them of belonging to a
party with "racist policies" which meant they were unsuitable to look after
the children.
The visit followed an anoymous tip-off about the couple's party membership.

Sea Creatures
Dale has provided us here with an overview of previous work on the sea
creature phenomenon particularly as done by Paul Leblond.
What I am comfortable with is that there are outright sea serpents out
there with external gills on their heads. These have been seen up close and
personal all over the world. I am unconvinced that we have pleiosaurs out
there though. The argument that we are mistaking other creatures for this
is well taken and nicely shown by some of this material.

Heart Tissue Restoration Successful
The fact remains that they are already doing it. Heart tissue is been
restored using stem cells in a location were it truly matters. Thus this
will available far quicker than imagined.
What has recently become apparent is that injection of stem cells made
from one's own skin cells can be targeted to restore damaged tissue
anywhere. There is obviously a lot more to it than that but it is still
that simple.
If we are lucky, a whole slew of ailments can be treated this way
successfully.
Of course, the holy grail here is the restoration of brain damage.

Elixer of Life?

Thus this work has now truly begun.

Language a factor in determining best interests of the child
Perron v. Perron, 2012 ONCA 811 holds:
[44] In a linguistic minority environment, homogeneous
French-language schools are generally preferable to French immersion
programs for ensuring that both languages, namely French and English, are

majority, homogeneous instruction in French does not result in losing the
language and culture of the linguistic majority. This does not therefore
imply a choice of preferring the culture and language of the minority over
