Feynman's "Ode to a Flower": an animation
You must have heard Richard Feynman's monologue on the beauty of a flower
from the scientist's viewpoint.
It was aired as a part of the interesting BBC program The Pleasure of
Finding Things Out.
But this may be the first time when you're encouraged to watch this
animation that was created on the background of Feynman's wise words.

100,000 were struck down with Norovirus in the UK over Christmas
Around 100,000 people were struck down with the winter vomiting bug over
Christmas, latest figures suggested as it emerged the number of confirmed
cases was 72% higher than this time last year.
The dramatic rise was attributed in part to an early outbreak of the
illness which closed dozens of hospital wards as it swept across the
country.
A total of 3,877 laboratory-confirmed cases of norovirus have now been
recorded in England and Wales - up on the 2,255 of last year.

What Do British Columbians Know that the Rest of Canada Doesn't - Yet?
What we know is that the RCMP is rotten, from the top down. The good news
is that an increasing percentage of Canadians across the rest of the

Perhaps British Columbians know the RCMP better because we have to put up

America avoids fiscal cliff disaster - but for how long?
So the US fiscal cliff has been avoided - or rather, postponed for a couple
of months after a last-ditch deal was clinched in Washington. Global share
prices have already rallied on the news that this is not to be a story of
financial calamity.
But instead, there's a story to be told of what happened to a party which
publicly pledged never to vote for tax rises; a leader accused of running a
"dictatorship" and being more interested in his own job than the long term
needs of the country, and another party whose bitter infighting meant a

Russia poised for largest naval exercise for decades
Russian warships have embarked on a long voyage to the Black and
Mediterranean seas to take part in what the Defence Ministry said would be
the largest naval exercise in decades.
It said on Wednesday that ships from its Northern, Baltic, Black Sea and
Pacific fleets would stage the exercise at the end of the month to test
their ability to act together outside Russian waters.
Its website said the training exercise would also include anti-terrorism
and anti-piracy drills.

U.N. raises Syria death toll to 60,000
More than 60,000 people have died in Syria's uprising and civil war, the
United Nations said on Wednesday, dramatically raising the death toll in a
struggle that shows no sign of ending.
In the latest violence, dozens were killed in a rebellious Damascus suburb
when a government air strike turned a petrol station into an inferno,
incinerating drivers who had rushed there for a rare chance to fill their
tanks, activists said.

The United States and New Zealand conducted secret tests of a "tsunami

The tests were carried out in waters around New Caledonia and Auckland

series of 10 large offshore blasts could potentially create a 33-foot
tsunami capable of inundating a small city.
The top secret operation, code-named "Project Seal", tested the doomsday
device as a possible rival to the nuclear bomb. About 3,700 bombs were

Carbon Based Energy Threatens Ecosystem in Myriad Ways
It seems that every time I read the newspaper I find yet another article
discussing the myriad ways carbon-based fuel is destroying our ecosystem.
What people don't seem to fully realize is that human's seat at the top of
the food chain means they are likely to bio-accumulate the greatest amount
of toxins over the long term.
Humans are bigger than bees, bats and frogs, which are all animals we know
are experiencing population collapse due to environmental contamination.

British Aid 'Funding Iranian Executions'
British taxpayers have effectively funded executions in Iran by providing

Prisoners' rights charity Reprieve claims recent spending has coincided

Benefits Rise 'Almost Double Salary Increase'
Welfare payouts for the jobless have risen almost twice as fast as average
salaries over the last five years, according to official figures.
Out-of-work benefits have increased in value by 20% since 2007, compared to
a rise of 12% in private sector pay.
Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith said the increases had cost
the taxpayer £6.3bn since the start of the recession in 2008.

The Taiwan You Never Knew: Underground Gas Station?
Taichung, an area for cutting edge underground operations, offered up a
classic for public inspection last month. An allegedly criminal
entrepreneur bought 95 octane gas at 20.5 NT a liter and sold for 27.5, 7

abandoned metalshop, was a great favorite with taxi drivers. He even handed
out $300 coupons for bringing in new people, printed up business cards, and
operated a delivery service. One of the more delightful aspects of Taiwan's
gray and illegal businesses is the way they mimic the formalities of

A proposed 28th amendment to the US Constitution
I know that in the US there is much debate about whether members of
Congress are in fact 'above the law'. I think that making it clear that
they are not would be a good thing.
In the UK where MPs enjoy huge privileges, I would suggest that such a law

course means not David Cameron's CINO party lead coalition, but maybe one

Better Barley
Work like this is always welcome to see. What we need to see is genetic
engineering that adapts desert plant strategies into our grassland crops. A
thick blade that holds water sounds like a deal maker costing little if any

long dry spell. It may even make the blade more palatable and useful to
ruminants.
Selection will be helpful, but mostly marginally.
A genetic strategy could be applied across all grains and allow cropping
in lands far more arid and make irrigation far more efficient. We know t... more »

Something as obvious as grazing rotation stabilizes the pasturage and
plausibly prevents its elimination. That is very good news for tropical
soils everywhere. If they also sustain partial forest cover while they do
all this, we may also have natural refertilization underway also. Recall
that cattle grazing is minimal on the uptake of nutrients.
This should also lead to groomed forests with a modest investment in
effort. What is clearly needed is an ongoing education program for farmers
on practical methods used elsewhere.
This also tells us that grazing rotation has be... more »

Fiction/nonfiction debate a diversion from the big question: Should we have common core standards?

The debate over fiction vs. non-fiction in the Common Core is diverting us
from a more important question: should we have common core standards?
The rational for the standards is the belief that our schools are "broken."
There is no evidence this is true: Middle class American students who

The "real hurdle" in educational reform: Poverty
Protecting children from the impact of poverty
Sent to the Chicago Sun Times, January 1, 2013
Yes, poverty is the “real hurdle to education reform” (Dec. 29).
We can protect children from some of the impact of poverty immediately and
inexpensively. Poverty means inadequate diet, inferior health care, and
lack of access to books at home, in school and in the community, among
other things, and each of these has a devastating effect on school
performance.
We are investing billions in new standards and tests, and there is no
research indicating that this will help children. Instead, ... more »
