Smartly done, Queen E. Now you can go back to focusing on your little great-granddaughter being born healthy and happy

KenInNY at DownWithTyranny! - 8 minutes ago
*Description:* The Queen overturned a rule that had been in place since 1917. The rule required a male heir to be first in line for the crown, but due to Kate's pregnancy announcement in December, that rule will be extracted. The new rule states any gender will have a stake in line for royalty. If the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have a girl, she will be third in line for the throne. *by Ken* Two first responses to this momentous news: (1) You mean she can just do that, the queen? Just sign her name, and make royal girl-children just the same as boy-children in the line of roya... more »

When will testing fever end?

Sent to Education Week, January 10, 2013. “Testing group picks ‘college readiness’ exam” (January 9) announces yet another test to add to the staggering pile of tests our students must take. When will this end? Because there is no evidence that adding more tests helps students, and plenty of evidence that increased testing will be very profitable for those who sell the tests and supply the infrastructure for the required on-line testing, the obvious answer is that testing fever will end only when the greed of the standardized-testing-industrial-complex is satisfied. The young philosopher was wrestling with his demons, including the death of his father, a sternly religious man who demanded absolute obedience from his son. Japan Takes A Dangerous Step Backwards Towards Fascism

Abe's new cabinet-- as far right as his grandfather's fascist cabinet during World War II In the lead up to World War II, Japan had it's own homemade brand of violent fascism-- and it wasn't a coincidence that they were allied with Germany and Italy. Until recently very few Japanese historians hesitated to describe the Japanese experience in the 1930s as fascist. Most interpreted it in Marxist terms as a last-ditch defense by monopoly capitalism, while also stressing that fascism had special characteristics in Japan. Trillion Dollar Coin Reveals the Monetary System in Death Throes

Mark Daniels at GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING - 3 hours ago
Eric Blair I’m thrilled that the trillion dollar coin idea is being taken seriously by the establishment. Not because I think it is a viable solution to the national debt, necessarily, but because it shows just how close our monetary system is to reform. First, for those not familiar with the trillion dollar coin; the idea is that the U.S. Treasury can coin any monetary value they want for whatever purpose they choose. In this case the idea has been floated to Obama to avert the mandatory raising of the debt ceiling by coining a trillion dollar coin. In other words, Obama can ... more »

Baseball Hall of Fame elects no players for first time since 1996

Rich Rifkin at Lexicon Daily - 8 hours ago
Before steroids came along and made baseball's Hall of Fame voting even messier, the selection process was always too subjective and most voters were badly informed as to what criteria should be used to measure a player's on-field performance over the course of a career. Based on what writers have said about how they determine their votes, it's clear most have a poor understanding of baseball metrics and some seem to be influenced by their personal relationships with the players. Using sabermetrics, such as Wins Above Replacement (WAR), it's not hard to decide who had a Hall of F... more »

The right of the people to keep and bear arms is an extension of the natural right to self-defense and a hallmark of personal sovereignty. It is specifically insulated from governmental interference by the Constitution and has historically been the linchpin of resistance to tyranny. Yet the progressives in both political parties stand ready to use the coercive power of the government to interfere with the exercise of that right by law-abiding persons because of the gross abuse of that right by some crazies in our midst. Diet Soda Linked to Depression in NIH Study

Matt at The Coming Crisis - 11 hours ago
Millions of people reach for an afternoon diet soda as a pick-me-up to make it through the rest of the day. But new research suggests sodas and other sugary drinks — especially artificially sweetened ones — could be related to depression. According to the research, which will be officially released at the American Academy of Neurology's annual meeting in mid-March, people who drink four cans or more of soda daily are about 30 percent more likely to be diagnosed with depression than people who don't drink soda. Coffee drinkers are about 10 percent less likely to develop depression ... more »
