Texas: Brief fire prompts shutdown of reactor at Bay City nuke plant

A fire at the South Texas Project Electric Generating Station, the nuclear
power plant about 90 miles southwest of Houston, shut down one of the
plant’s two reactors Tuesday afternoon.
The fire broke out at 4:42 p.m. at the main transformer that feeds power
from the reactor to the public power grid, and the reactor was shut down
immediately, plant spokesman Buddy Eller said.
The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes, Eller said. He did not know
when the reactor might be restarted.

Indonesia: Tornado Hits Batam, Damages Hundreds of Houses

A tornado struck the Riau Islands city of Batam on Wednesday afternoon,
damaging hundreds of houses and injuring a child.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said the tornado struck at
3:30 p.m. and badly damaged 29 houses, moderately damaged 102 houses and
inflicted slight damage on 96 houses.
Two mosques, a government office and a gas station were among other
buildings harmed by the tornado, the BNPB said in a press statement on
Wednesday.

outbreak of anthrax among cattle. The move comes in the wake of an anthrax
outbreak reported in Tamil Nadu's Theni and Cumbum districts, bordering
Idukki district in Kerala.
The government on Tuesday night banned cattle from Tamil Nadu being brought
to the state through the checkposts in Idukki district.
On Wednesday, the state animal husbandry department launched a n action
programme to vaccinate the cattle breeds along the state's border districts.

Boston declares public health emergency as Massachusetts faces harsh flu season

hopes to set up places where people can get vaccinated. The city said there
have been four flu-related deaths, all elderly residents, since the
unofficial start of the flu season Oct. 1.
"The best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family is to get
the flu shot," said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
The city was experiencing its worst flu season since at least 2009, Menino
said, with about 700 confirmed cases of the flu, compared with 70 all of

MoD Overspends Equipment Budget By £6.5bn

The Ministry of Defence has overspent its equipment budget by £6.5bn and
some of its major orders are likely to be delivered 39 years late.
The National Audit Office (NAO), in its latest report into the MoD's
spending, has revealed that the 16 most costly projects, which originally
totalled £56.5bn when they were approved and should have taken 159 years to
deliver between them, now have a combined price tag of £61.1bn and will not
be ready for a total of 195 years.

Killer Whales Trapped In Canadian Sea Ice

About a dozen killer whales have become trapped in a vast stretch of sea
ice in Hudson Bay, Canada.
The animals, stuck in the waters near the remote Inuit community of
Inukjuak in Quebec, are taking it in turns to gasp for breath through a
hole in the ice, which was about the size of a van but is reportedly
shrinking due to freezing temperatures.
The whales are said to be panicking at times in their desperate bid to get
oxygen.

Tappin: Extradited Brit Jailed For Arms Dealing

trying to buy missile parts and resell them to Iran.
US District Judge David Briones, who sentenced Tappin, said he would

born 100 years ago today -- was on a national ticket 5 times, and had he
completed his second term would have held national office for 16 years. Not
only that, but because his vice presidency and presidency were interrupted
by Kennedy/Johnson, he first took national office in 1953 and resigned the
presidency in August 1974, spanning over 20 years.

An oil depot in the port area of the Nigerian city of Lagos has been hit by
a major explosion and fire.
The blast, which shook buildings in the Apapa area, happened during a
transfer of fuel, the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) said.
Firefighters have been at the scene and four people were wounded in the
blast, AFP news agency reports.

bailout until it drops its opposition to wide-ranging economic reforms.
During a press conference in Berlin, the German chancellor insisted the aid
deal would not be completed without Nicosia agreeing to a programme

Norovirus: new strain may be to blame for record cases say experts

The so-called Sydney 2012 strain has become the most common form of
norovirus in circulation, scientists at the Health Protection Agency said.
The virus, named after the place it first emerged, caused a similar early
start to the norovirus season in Australia as has happened here.
So far over 1.1m people have contracted nororvirus this winter in England
as cases approached double the normal rate.

A commuter ferry has crashed into the dockside in Lower Manhattan in New
York during the morning rush hour, injuring between 30 and 50 people.
The Seastreak Ferry, which provides daily services from Atlantic Highlands
in New Jersey, struck Pier 11 in the East River not far from Wall Street at
about 8:45am ET (1:45pm GMT).
Officials say at least two of the passengers were in a critical condition,

First cases of 'incurable' antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea found in North America as CDC warns of public health nightmare

The long feared nightmare of U.S. public health officials has come to pass
with the news anti-biotic resistant Gonorrhea has been detected in North
American patients.
A study released today by the Journal of the American Medical Association
announced it had found nine patients with a strain of the sexually
transmitted disease immune to the last remaining effective oral antibiotic.
This confirms the fears of both the Centers for Disease Control and the
World Health Organisation who warned last year that untreatable gonorrhea,

Child protection campaigners have slammed social workers who allowed a
four-year-old girl to stay with a foster parent for two weeks after they
suspected he might be a paedophile.
Bristol City Council failed to act instantly after police warned them the
vulnerable child lived with an alleged sex offender, which the NSPCC
believe could have put her at 'serious risk of harm'.
The local authority has spent two months fighting a High Court battle to
prevent details of the case being reported.

A Polish sex attacker was killed by a passerby who intervened to stop him
molesting an 18-year-old girl in the street, a jury heard yesterday.
Janusz Smoderek died of stab wounds soon after he drunkenly assaulted the
teenager while on his way home from a lap-dancing club.
Stephen Sleaford admits stepping in to save the young woman, but insists he
was not responsible for Smoderek's death, and says it was in fact the Pole
who was carrying a knife, not him.

Norovirus: Blame It On The Aussies, Experts Say

A new strain of norovirus, which spread from Australia, is responsible for
the majority of recent cases, health experts have said.
The new variant of the bug, called Sydney 2012, has become the "dominant
strain", officials said.
In October, when the number of cases started to increase, the Health
Protection Agency (HPA) performed genetic testing on norovirus strains in
England and Wales.

Syrian rebels freed 48 Iranian hostages on Wednesday in exchange for the
release of more than 2,000 civilian prisoners held by the Syrian
government, the head of a Turkish aid agency which helped broker the deal
said.
The Syrian rebel al-Baraa brigade seized the Iranians in early August and
initially threatened to kill them, saying they were members of Iran's elite
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps sent to fight for Syrian President Bashar

outside the Washington premiere of a controversial film about the hunt for
Osama bin Laden.

Nasa Reveals Neutron Star Effects

Nasa has released a film showing a spectacular light show made by a
fast-moving jet of particles from a rapidly rotating neutron star.
The film may provide new insight into the nature of some of the densest
matter in the universe, Nasa says.
The images were captured by space telescope, the Chandra X-ray Observatory.

Quebec judges accused of buying drugs

The Canadian Judicial Council announced Tuesday it is reviewing the conduct
of Justice Michel Girouard of the Quebec Superior Court for the alleged
purchase of “an illicit substance from a police informant.”
Another judge, Marc Grimard of Quebec Court, is facing a similar allegation.
On Monday, Chief Justice Elizabeth Corte of the Quebec Court said the
allegation against Judge Grimard is being taken “very seriously” and he is
not being assigned new cases.
