It's like The Onion for Canadians and it is very good. As Justin Trudeau continues his tour around the country, seeking to inspire Liberal Party members' hearts and minds as his father did some 42 years ago, no one has yet worked up the courage to mention to the family scion that the Liberal Party has been defunct for almost two years. Russia to Americans: Never give up your guns

Matt at The Coming Crisis - 3 minutes ago
These days, there are few things to admire about the socialist, bankrupt and culturally degenerating USA, but at least so far, one thing remains: the right to bear arms and use deadly force to defend one's self and possessions. This will probably come as a total shock to most of my Western readers, but at one point, Russia was one of the most heavily armed societies on earth. This was, of course, when we were free under the Tsar. Weapons, from swords and spears to pistols, rifles and shotguns were everywhere, common items. People carried them concealed, they carried them holstered. ... more »

The fire broke out at 4:42 p.m. at the main transformer that feeds power from the reactor to the public power grid, and the reactor was shut down immediately, plant spokesman Buddy Eller said. The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes, Eller said. He did not know when the reactor might be restarted. http://fuelfix.com/blog/2013/01/08/county-judge-bay-city-nuke-plant-fire-contained/

Congressional Progressive Caucus At A Crossroads

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 10 minutes ago
This week Congressional Progression Caucus co-chair Keith Ellison sent out a fundraising letter for People for the American Way talking about the "3 Progressive Principles for the Next Deal." He points out that the fight is just getting started. We need to forge a way forward with economic policies that protect the security and enable the prosperity of *all *Americans. The only way to do this is to adhere to a set of basic, sensible principles that reflect our core American values. I’ve proposed three such principles that I believe will get us there. The city is working with health care centers to offer free flu vaccines and hopes to set up places where people can get vaccinated. The city said there have been four flu-related deaths, all elderly residents, since the unofficial start of the flu season Oct. 1. About a dozen killer whales have become trapped in a vast stretch of sea ice in Hudson Bay, Canada. The animals, stuck in the waters near the remote Inuit community of Inukjuak in Quebec, are taking it in turns to gasp for breath through a hole in the ice, which was about the size of a van but is reportedly shrinking due to freezing temperatures. "Mexico City transforms through beautifying public spaces" by Adriana Gomez Licon | Associated Press, December 30, 2012 MEXICO CITY — The plan is as big as this mammoth city: Turn a seedy metro hub into Mexico City’s Times Square; clear swarms of feisty vendors and remodel the historic Alameda Central; illuminate the plazas and walkways of a park twice the size of New York’s Central Park. Mexico City’s government is trying to transform one of the world’s largest cities by beautifying public spaces, parks, and monuments buried beneath a sea of honking cars, street hawkers, billboar... more »

The Young Turks Attack Alex Jones, Call Him Crazy

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 5 hours ago
"Like Alex Jones, Michael Savage is a full blown lunatic. He has mental issues, needs to be on some sort of medication, and perhaps institutionalized." - Cenk Uygur. What utter garbage. This is stupid rhetoric. Is everyone now a clinical therapist? Is there a new priesthood coming to power? The media is throwing the word "mentally ill" around willy-nilly, just like they have done with the word "terrorist." Anyone who goes against mainstream thought is mentally ill according to the priests in the media. Calling the opposition crazy is the oldest trick in the totalitarian playbook. ... more »

Sometimes, the most obvious things are worth pointing out. Richard Nixon -- born 100 years ago today -- was on a national ticket 5 times, and had he completed his second term would have held national office for 16 years. Why Blue America Never Endorsed Heidi Heitkamp Last Year

Early last year very few people thought the Democrats would be able to hold the North Dakota Senate seat which Kent Conrad was giving up. In 2008, Obama only won 45% of the vote there (and this year he wound up with an even more dismal 39%, winning only 6 of the state's 53 counties). It's a red state turning redder. But Heidi Heitkamp was the perfect candidate for the seat-- a populist firebrand against the super-wealthy corporate hackthe GOP was running. And Heitkamp did win, beating Rep. Rick Berg 160,752 to 157,758 and taking 24 counties, including the entire eastern part of the ... more »
