Economist Bill Black: "The fundamental insanity at all times was that [Obama and the Congress] put together, one, we must avoid the fiscal cliff because that's austerity and it'll throw us into recession, and two, therefore we must make far greater budget cuts, adopt far greater austerity. Now, obviously, that's insane logic.

'They're starting to seriously worry': Aides growing increasingly concerned about low turnout at Obama inauguration

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 15 minutes ago
Crowds may have flocked to the National Mall to see President Obama make history in 2009, but the team behind the president's 2013 inauguration bash later this month are bracing themselves for a ton of empty seats. The ceremony that Washington will stage in a few weeks won't be the historic affair it was in 2009, when nearly 2 million people flocked to the Capitol o watch Obama take the oath of office. This time, District of Columbia officials expect between 600,000 and 800,000 people for Obama's public swearing-in on the steps of the Capitol on Monday, January 21. http://www.daily... more »

Pro-British militant groups are instigating riots that have rocked the Northern Irish capital Belfast in the past month, a police officers' representative said on Sunday as officers came under attack again. With a buildup of 16 Russian warships carrying thousands of marines on the Syrian coast “to deter the West from deploying ground forces in Syria,” Syrian Bashar Assad could afford to brazen it out in his first public speech in seven months. Speaking at the Damascus opera house, Sunday, Jan. 6, Assad said Syria no longer takes dictation from anyone and called on Syrian citizens to defend the country against “a war fought by only a handful of Syrians and many foreigners.” He rejected dialogue with the opposition which he referred to as “puppets fabricated by the West.” http://www.deb... more »

By Bashar al-Assad Global Research Syria’s president has blamed “outside forces” for orchestrating the conflict in his country in a rare public address to the nation. Latvia’s Economic Disaster Heralded as a Neoliberal “Success Story”: A Model for Europe and the US?

Mark Daniels at GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING - 13 hours ago
By Jeffrey Sommers and Michael Hudson Global Research *A generation ago the Chicago Boys and their financial supporters applauded General Pinochet’s anti-labor Chile as a success story, thanks mainly to its transformation of their Social Security into Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) that almost universally were looted by the employer grupos by the end of the 1970s. In the last decade, the Bush Administration, seeking a Trojan Horse to privatize Social Security in the United States, applauded Chile’s disastrous privatization of pension accounts (turning many over to US f... more »

How's That Elections Canada Investigation Going?

thwap at thwap's schoolyard - 14 hours ago
With all the excitement surrounding "Idle No More" and Chief Spence's hunger-strike, the passing of 2012 and the complete failure of Elections Canada to have completed its investigation into the 2011 election law violations slipped my mind. Until today. So, ... um, .... yep. Massive violations of our election laws. Wholesale assault on the integrity of our electoral process. Still no report from our elections watchdog. Sigh. I guess I'll write about "Idle No More" instead. So, Montreal Simon has brought the latest example of Christie Belchforth's mental breakdown to our attentio... more »

The Investor Is King

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 14 hours ago
If you wondered why the Harper government has gutted Canada's environmental legislation, Frances Russell provides the answer: The North American Free Trade Agreement was the first of a New World Order of trade agreements designed, to borrow the words of the Trilateral Commission in 1975, to repeal “an excess of democracy in the western world.” It set a precedent never before dreamed of, let alone achieved, in international trade: the right of private investors to sue nations. And not just for millions, but billions, robbing national treasuries of the means to address the social ... more »

David Cameron 'entitled' to use threat of veto to win back powers from Europe

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 15 hours ago
David Cameron has claimed he is "entitled" and "enabled" to block efforts by eurozone countries to pass treaty changes that would create an effective currency union unless his EU partners agree to his own demands for treaty changes that would create a looser UK-EU relationship. Cameron made his threat in an interview on the BBC's Andrew Marr programme on Sunday as speculation mounts on the contents of his landmark Europe speech later this month setting out his plans to demand a looser relationship with the EU. http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2013/jan/06/david-cameron-entitled-thr... more »

laura k at wmtc - 15 hours ago
Naomi Wolf, in *The Guardian*: Zero Dark Thirty is a gorgeously-shot, two-hour ad for keeping intelligence agents who committed crimes against Guantánamo prisoners out of jail. It makes heroes and heroines out of people who committed violent crimes against other people based on their race – something that has historical precedent. Your film claims, in many scenes, that CIA torture was redeemed by the "information" it "secured", information that, according to your script, led to Bin Laden's capture. This narrative is a form of manufacture of innocence to mask a great crime: what you... more »
