"Paradigm Shift For The Healthcare Expense Monster"
*"Paradigm Shift For The Healthcare Expense Monster"*
by Wolf Richter
"A sadly familiar theme in the US—the growing ranks of the working poor—was
fleshed out by the report, “Low-Income Working Families: The Growing
Economic Gap.” But it did something else: it added graphic details to the
conundrum of US healthcare spending. While it ballooned to $2.7 trillion,
17.9% of GDP, or $8,680 per capita, households have lowered their share.
And so have businesses. What gives?

Mawks & Hawks
Everybody knows that the Republicans are phony deficit hawks, pretending to
care about spending only when they are out of power. (see: two unfunded
wars, unpaid-for Medicare prescription drug benefit.) They hilariously
paint President Obama as a big-spending socialist leading us down the road
to financial ruin, even as he accurately points out that he has actually slowed
down the rate of government growth.
But despite the fact that only about 15% of Americans point to The Deficit

A Warning Straight from the Horse's Mouth. We're In For a High-Carbon Fossil Fuel Future
If you were counting on "peak oil" to curb our fossil fuel addiction,
forget it. BP CEO Bob Dudley says the peak oil theory is "increasingly

It's not that we aren't running out of the relatively clean, conventional
crude oil. We are. It's that we're finding ever new and larger sources

What is Germany scared of? Bundesbank to retrieve $200bn of gold reserves from central banks in Paris and New York
Germany is set to retrieve its gold reserves held abroad, in a move critics
fear could trigger a contagion of mistrust among the world’s central banks.
The country’s Bundesbank is set to repatriate a large hoard from its
holding in New York and all of its bullion from Paris, the German newspaper
Handelsblatt has reported.
Germany's Bundesbank owns nearly 3,400 tonnes of gold – only the US has a

EU clamps down on credit ratings agencies
Credit rating agencies will have to be more transparent about how they

The changes will force agencies to indicate when they publish assessments,

Obama signed 23 executive actions
The president said he would announce 23 executive actions today, but said
they are not a substitute for action in Congress. He said he is calling on
federal lawmakers to pass several proposals "right away", including
universal background checks for anyone trying to buy a gun.
Right now, some 40% of US gun purchases are done without background checks.
As part of his $500m (£311m) plan, Mr Obama also called on Congress to
restore the expired ban on military-style assault weapons and to enact a
10-bullet limit on high-capacity ammunition magazines.

It's Hard to See Any Other Way Forward
We are going to have to accept substantially higher costs for liquid-carbon
fuel. There are some uses, such as aviation, that just don't suit
alternative energy options, at least not those available today.
Why should petroleum-based fuels cost two, three, four times what they do
today? Two reasons: we need to price fossil carbon realistically to
reflect the true environmental costs it imposes and we need to use that
revenue to support non-fossil fuels.
There are new technologies that enable us to use surface carbon assets
instead of fossil carbon to produce the gasoline and oil ... more »

Q Day 1: The 2016 Nomination Process
An anonymous commenter asks:
Do you foresee any meaningful rules changes occurring for the 2016
primaries and what impact on the nomination process do you think they would
have?
I doubt that anything significant will happen with the formal rules.
Republicans, I suspect, will follow up on tightening the link between votes
and delegates, making them a bit more like the Democrats in that regard;
this part of the process has always been a bit murky to me, so I don't want
to predict much about how successful the change will be. And it's not
likely to matter a whole lot to nomination out... more »

Is "Too Big To Jail" A Sacred Concept In America... Even With A Democrat In The White House?

The "IF" That Divides Us
We watch in children with pathetic interest, the degree in which they
possess recuperative force. When they are hurt by us, or by each other, or
go to the bottom of the class, or miss the annual prizes, or are beaten in
the game, — if they lose heart, and remember the mischance in their chamber
at home, they have a serious check. But if they have the buoyancy and
resistance that preoccupies them with new interest in the new moment, — the
wounds cicatrize, and the fibre is the tougher for the hurt.

Yesterday, Lawrence Martin floated a depressing thought: We may have to

With still plenty of time in his current term, Mr. Harper will join the

15-year club. Opposition party members will quietly tell you that without
amalgamation or a co-operation deal of some kind among progressive parties,
the chances of unseating the Conservatives are small. Reducing them to a
minority is well possible, they feel, but not throwing them out.

The move, which is said to have come about after the president lost

Police recruits to be paid less than trainee McDonald's manager after reforms see starting salary cut by £4,000
Police reacted with anger yesterday after their starting salary was slashed

Theresa May backed a package of controversial reforms which will see new

The Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, said the
cut was 'ill-conceived and fails to reflect the dangers and demands

Mali's Islamist groups united by war threat
A powerful southern offensive by Islamists in Mali last week, halted only
by French air strikes, showed that a loose alliance of rebels from al
Qaeda's North African wing and local groups has been united by the threat
of foreign intervention.
When the coalition of Islamists swept across northern Mali last year,
massacring army troops and carving up the vast desert zone, ties between Al
Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and local groups Ansar Dine and MUJWA
had looked opportunistic, and regional mediators believed they could prize
