curse," and noting that every second-term president in the Gallup era
except for Reagan and Clinton had lower approval ratings averages in their

the U.S. debt ceiling next month would trigger economic chaos.

OK, not *that* busy. There was a lot of prep to be done at work during the
week but other than that it was sufficiently cold that Southern Man spent
his evenings holed up in The Trailer drinking hot cocoa and watching
movies, and much of Saturday doing the same and wondering if Friday's flu
shot had made him ill. Of course there was daily geocaching (but often just
one a day to keep the streak alive) and Sunday was filled with church and
parents and friends and then church again (singles leadership team
meeting).

Environmental officials are investigating whether fuel contaminants have
spread from a defunct service garage to neighboring residential properties
in the city of Rockland, Maine.
According to an article in the Bangor Daily News, the garage closed in
2006, and soil contamination from fuel leaks was discovered a couple of
years later, when the underground gasoline tanks were removed.

The Anonymous hacktivist group appears to have hacked MIT's website,
leaving a tribute for Aaron Swartz, the online activist who recently
committed suicide.
Swartz was a the co-founder of Demand Progress and founder of Infogami, a
service later merged with Reddit. He committed suicide in New York City on
Jan. 11.
MIT's website was defaced with a message claiming the prosecution of
Swartz, who was arrested in 2011 for allegedly harvesting academic papers
from the JSTOR online journal archive, was a "a grotesque miscarriage of
justice".

I have been busy the last few days taking care of some family and personal
business... Only now have I actually had the time to sit down, surf the
Internet, and write my weekly rant....
I have done a large number of articles about the Sandy Hook "shooting", and
everything that I have seen now points in the direction that it was an

Here's a case where online non-access makes it awfully difficult for me to
write about a piece I'd really like to -- in this case a new installment in
the series of pieces *The New Yorker*'s John McPhee has been devoting to
reflections on his own history as a writer. In the January 14 issue he
offers a piece called "Structure" (see below for a link of sorts), which
has two different subtitles. On the magazine's contents page, it's "Where
do you start?" On the actual article, and int he online presentation, it's
