Paul Craig Roberts, *Contributor* * *Those who have followed the Republican campaign for the presidential nomination and current contest between Romney and Obama know that the United States has no political leadership in Washington. Billions of dollars have been spent on political propaganda, but not a single important issue has been addressed. The closest the campaign has come to a political issue is which candidate can grovel the lowest at the feet of Israeli prime minister Netanyahu. Romney won that contest. Scientists Warn Geo-Engineering Can Kill Billions of People

Who's Spinning Whom?!?

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 1 hour ago
John Sides reports today on some research which confirms what we all basically know: winning the spin matters more than winning the debate. That is, as Kim Fridkin et al. find, reactions differed to a 2004 debate depending on whether people just watched the debate; watched the debate and news coverage; or just watched the news coverage. As John says, there's evidence from earlier cycles for the same effect. What I'm wondering about, however, is how the spin is going to work this time around. Who is going to select the clips that everyone sees, which therefore become the memorable mo... more »

Higgs: living near the cliff of instability

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 1 hour ago
Jester posted an interesting text on the instability of the Higgs field: What's the deal with vacuum stability? Of course, this topic has been covered many times on this blog, including on July 3rd and July 17th this year, but it's interesting to read Jester's twists on the story, anyway. First, given the current best estimates of the top quark mass and the Higgs mass (other parameters don't matter too much), the quartic (=fourth power) coupling describing the Higgs self-interaction \(|H|^4\) almost certainly goes negative beneath the Planck scale. *Taken from May 2012 paper by... more »

Human Migration Map Review

This is a nice review put together by Dale Drinnon of the present picture of earliest human DNA migration globally. We presume direction which is completely reasonable but we still need to be aware of that. Clovis points originated someplace and there is no point ruling out a traffic reversal over the Bering. Also it is my contention that DNA flow never really lets up unless a natural cul de sac is established in which population expands inside natural boundaries. A Huge Breakthrough for Renewable Energy

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 10 hours ago
One serious drawback of some forms of renewable energy, such as wind or tidal power, has been that they don't conform to peak market demand. Some are intermittent, some work best at off-peak, low-demand hours. What's been missing is a viable means of storing surplus renewable energyproduction. A Brit engineer seems to have come up with a solution, liquid air, that is nearly as efficient as conventional battery technology. Water vapour and oxygen are removed from the air. The remaining nitrogen is then super-cooled until it liquifies using off-peak renewable energy production. ... more »
