In this interesting piece carried by the latest edition of *Progress Magazine*, YouGov supremo Peter Kellner writes “New polling for Progress shows that working-class attitudes are not what some in the Labour party imagine them to be” and subsequently goes on to argue that social class does not condition values, politics, and voting habits as it once did. Anyone with a passing knowledge of recent work on the sociology of class, or indeed the theoretical justification underpinning New Labourism and the Third Way are likely to have encountered similar arguments at some point. I want to remind anyone who hasn't that Romney has still not come clean on his taxes and that Bloomberg reported last week that he doesn't appear to have paid *any* taxes between 1996 and 2009, using a loophole and the Mormon Church to avoid paying his fair share-- or even any share at all. More GOP intimidation

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 12 hours ago
These people actually believe they own the country and have the right to be arbiters of who is allowed to vote. The court had to issue an injuction against them: County officials received a complaint shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday that Republicans outside a polling location on Maple Street in Homestead were stopping people outside the polls and asking for identification. This is just in PA. I'm seeing reports of similar incidents all over the country on the twitter. This is going to an ugly day and if Obama manages to win against this concerted effort to steal the election, it's go... more »

GOP officials booted, Black Panthers return -- and Obama at polling site?

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 12 hours ago
A Pennsylvania judge is issuing an order to reinstate Republican election officials across Philadelphia who allegedly were ejected or refused entry by on-site Democratic voting chief judges, GOP officials tell Fox News. One Republican official claimed that "just under 70" Republican election officials were blocked from Philadelphia polling sites Tuesday morning by Democrats on site. One of them, the official claimed, "was shoved out of the polling place." http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/11/06/judge-issuing-order-to-reinstate-booted-philadelphia-election-officials/

Geoscientists identify trigger for Earth's last big freeze

With the US election on going it seems as if we are in a holding pattern when it comes to the ME wars. Today is the day for something different Ok, so these scientists think they have a handle on what caused the last big freeze... What is not mentioned is what caused the warming prior to the thaw that caused the freeze. Can't blame that on the masses! So, what warmed the planet? And could that same mechanism have been in play at this time? Or should I say, in the near past, because it looks as if the planet is getting cooler, yet again. *A new model of flood waters from melting of... more »

Israelis on trial in Turkey over Gaza ship deaths

Turkey on Tuesday opened the trial in absentia of former Israeli military commanders charged over the 2010 killings of nine Turks aboard a Gaza-bound aid ship. The proceedings against four of Israel's most senior retired commanders, including the ex-head of the army, has been dismissed by Israel as a politically motivated "show trial" and threatens to further strain already fraught relations. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/06/us-turkey-israel-trial-idUSBRE8A50Z420121106

Canada to allow civil nuclear trade with India

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 12 hours ago
Canadian firms will be able to export uranium and nuclear reactors to India for the first time in almost four decades under an agreement between the two nations, their prime ministers said, but more work is needed to implement the deal. Once implemented, the agreement will end a ban on nuclear cooperation Canada imposed in 1976 after India secretly exploded its first nuclear bomb in 1974, commonly called the "Smiling Buddha", using material from a Canadian-built reactor in India. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/06/us-india-canada-idUSBRE8A50M520121106

Obama-Romney: TRF poll

*Update:* About 1/3 of U.S. TRF readers voted for Obama and 3/5 of them expected Obama to win. Only 1% of TRF readers voted for Obama but expected Romney to win. Among the non-TRF readers, Romney slightly won the popular vote but by the electoral votes, Obama safely defended his presidency. This poll is very simple and unsurprising. I want the U.S. readers – which make up 1/2 of the TRF visitors – to report whom they voted for and whom they expect to win. As it always the case, whatever GOPers are obsessing about, it's because they're doing it themselves. I've been a bit paralyzed these last few days. I'm not nervous in the same way I was in 2008. Just feel like everything that can be said, has been said a thousand times already. I'm turning it over to the universe. I've implored the cosmos to give us what we need and I'm hoping it will be what I want. I'm too superstitious to make predictions. But this much I will predict, if the GOP manages to steal the vote, or it comes down to the Roberts court handing it to Willard, this time I won't be silent. I hope no one will. In the meantime, think it's going to be a very long day. So her... more »

Why I Voted for Barack Obama Today

Amazing how the Simpsons is still pretty funny after 25 years… In the interest of full disclosure, I thought I’d list the reasons why I voted the way I did.
