10:30 pm MSTDr. Ruth Analyzes The Congressional Republicans
Did you know that Dr. Ruth-- Karola Ruth Siegel Westheimer-- was a Jewish freedom fighter in the Israeli War for Independence, a sniper for the Haganah in Jerusalem? No? Did you know she tweets? And this morning she was tweeting about the so-called "fiscal cliff," or at least about the obstructionist Republicans who created it and are forcing the country over it. You do know how obstinate and selfish Republican Members of Congress have become. And you probably don't need Dr. Ruth to tell you Republicans make lousy lovers. Unless you're a masochist.

Winter and baths
My body is having a super hard time adjusting to the temp change between St Maarten and Michigan (from the 80s to the 20s, ugh). Some things I like about winter are winter coats, scarves, boots......... Two things that came in the mail while I was gone. I have been looking for the perfect grey coat forever, and finally got one on Gilt made by love Moschino. Also got a winter hat by Betsey Johnson that is insanely adorable and comfy off Ideeli.com. To try and warm up, I used the jacuzzi tub tonight and used two new products that I loved. One was a bath oil that was really moist... more »
Public Schools Falling Like Dominoes
*A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Bruce A. Dixon* *The forces of education privatization scored a major victory this November in Georgia, thru passage of a cleverly written constitutional amendment backed by a multiimillion dollar deceptive ad campaign, and the active backing or complicit silence of much of the black political class.* Those of us who have been closely following education policy over the past decade, have always known and understood that a test and punish pedagogy would destroy public education, the souls of our nation's children, our democracy and our basic human... more »
Back from Holiday
Hope everyone had an amazing holiday. I know I did......I think my brain is still on holiday. :). So, as you all know, Kurt and I left for a 10 night jaunt in St Maarten for Christmas 2012. We flew back on Christmas, which is an awesome day to fly (minus the fact that I almost died on a plane 3 years ago on Christmas day, LOL) as the airports are deserted. The day before and after Christmas are always crazy busy, but the actual holiday is fairly silent. There was almost nobody on our flights from St Maarten to Charlotte. So, we rented a condo at a place called AquaMarina, which... more »

2013: The Year Americans (And Most Other People As Well) Realize They Cannot Afford Any More Wars For Israel
It is rapidly now approaching the end of the year 2012, and there have been some gains and some losses in this war against the criminals that are out for our enslavement. It is definitely time now to think about what the year 2013 will be like, and whether or not the long awaited financial armageddon that everyone knows is definitely coming, will happen very shortly in the new year. I want to share with my readers the latest work of a great writer, "Horse237" who writes the blog, Video Rebel's Blog, at www.vidrebel.wordpress.com, entitled: "2013 The Year Americans Realize That Th... more »
The fiscal cliff in memes
As we're waiting for the next act of the fiscal cliff tragicomedy let's review some of the some the past memes in this play. Let's never forget the GOP's inadvertent admission at the RNC. Their rejected budget proposals. Their plans for the social safety net. And their master plan to shift the blame via press release. Which will be duly transcribed by the establishment media. the community
"Humanity is preparing for the Greater Community. It does not know this yet, of course, but that is its stage of evolution, and everyone is involved. The fact that humanity is unprepared for the realities of contact with life in the universe is very apparent, but at a more unconscious level, people are anticipating this, and that is why it emerges in your movies, in your books, in human imagination. There is a seed of truth, an element of truth here. There is a reason that people cannot speak of these things in public because it has been discouraged in the social discourse. That fo... more »
Oahu, Hawaii is Eroding From Within
Here's a glimpse of paradise. Kanenelu beach, Oahu. Photo courtesy: iwritealot.com Plan your island getaway now: In time, the mountainous tropical paradise of Oahu will erode, according to new research, with the biggest losses coming from within the island itself. To be accurate, you do have some time to book that vacation before Hawaii's Oahu flattens from an island into a low-lying seamount. Researchers writing in the upcoming February 15 issue of the journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta estimate that the volcanic island will continue to grow, thanks to plate tectonics, for a... more »

The Price of Milk To Double Without a Farm Bill
Eric Blair *Activist Post* Did you know milk, cheese, and other dairy products could double in January if the farm bill isn't passed before the new year? At first I thought this was a veiled threat from the farm lobby to get their subsidies, but it looks like it goes deeper than that. In fact, farmers don't want the price to go up because they fear they'll be swimming in unsold milk. "Few will buy milk the USDA will be forced to sell at prices consumers can’t afford, so Congress has no alternative but to stop the change," UW-Madison agriculture economist Bruce Jones told the ... more »
The fiction vs. non-fiction debate: A distraction from a more important question
Sent to the Los Angeles Times, Dec. 27, 2012 The debate over fiction vs. non-fiction in the Common Core is diverting us from a more important question: should we have common core standards? The rational for the standards is the belief that our schools are “broken.” There is no evidence this is true: Middle class American students who attend well-funded schools score at the top of the world on international tests. Our unspectacular scores are because US has such a high percentage of child poverty, 23.1%, the second-highest percentage among 34 economically advanced countries. High-sc... more »

Not sure why so many journalists still ignore the obvious fact the Tea Party is just ultra-conservative Republicans by another name, not some new phenomenon. But yes, whereas they were once a fringe group among a majority of moderates, the ultra-cons have taken over the power structure of the Republican party despite their small numbers. Which is why, despite the rumors, gossip and stenography about the fiscal "cliff," we're never going to get a decent offer from the GOP. How the UK tax authority got cozy with big business
For Ian Barlow, Britain's tax authority has gone from being fearsome to being really rather nice. In the 1990s, when the accountant was head of UK taxation for KPMG, he argued Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) was creating an "increasingly fierce environment" for corporations. But last month, Barlow, 61, said senior American business executives found the UK taxman's approach "refreshing." "It is a tax authority that is much easier to deal with than their own tax authority, and I think that's no bad thing," he said over a banquet of salmon mousse and rib of beef at the Instit... more »

George H W Bush
Bush the elder was a moderate Republican - and it seem unlikely he could be nominated today. His illness reminds us of the gulf between the Republican Party of twenty years ago and today. Some of President Bush's legislative actions were positively progressive. On July 26, 1990, he signed the Americans with Disabilities Act, which stated that businesses can not discriminate against a qualified individual with a disability. This includes job hiring, job training, worker's compensation and other terms. President H W Bush also signed the Clean Air Act of 1990, environmental legisl... more »

Cloture Votes/Filibusters Primer
I blogged again over at Plum Line today about cloture votes and filibusters(they're not the same thing!) and received a request in comments to explain. So here's a primer that goes into a bit more detail than the last couple of times I've written about it. A filibuster generally has been an effort to defeat something by using available parliamentary maneuvers; most famously that's been talking endlessly, but any maneuver qualifies. Or, to put it another way, what we're really interested in here is any kind of obstruction by the minority -- any minority, partisan or otherwise. We can ... more »
Fabrication versus disbelief
R. v. Cyr, 2012 ONCA 919 deals with the distinction between disbelieving an accused and finding an exculpatory statement made by the accused is a fabrication. A fabrication may be taken as showing an inference of guilt whereas mere disbelief is evidence of nothing. Some might question whether an innocent accused might not fabricate a story -- and thus fabrication ought to mean no more than mere disbelief. Regardless, the law is stated clearly below: [74] The parties do not differ significantly on the governing principles although they part company on the result of the application o... more »

28 Good Questions That The Mainstream Media Should Be Asking
Why is there so little trust in the mainstream media these days? CNN ratings have been hovering close to record lows over the past few months. A recent Gallup survey found that 60 percent of all Americans "have little or no trust" in the mainstream media. That was a record high according to Gallup. So why is this happening? Sadly, the truth is that the mainstream media quit telling the truth a long time ago. The mainstream media has an agenda, and more Americans than ever are beginning to recognize this. Once upon a time, control of the news in the United States was at least somewhat... more »

When that happens, it is going to be absolutely catastrophic for the U.S. economy. Right now, we export a lot of our inflation. When financial markets in the United States crash, so does the U.S. economy. Just remember what happened back in 2008. The financial markets crashed, the credit markets froze up, and suddenly the economy went into cardiac arrest. Well, there are very few things that could cause the financial markets to crash harder or farther than a derivatives panic. Sadly, most Americans don't even understand what derivatives are. Unlike stocks and bonds, a derivative is not an investment in anything real. Rather, a derivative is a legal bet on the future value or performance of something else. J... more »
From Good Jobs To Bad Jobs To No Jobs - The Tragic Downfall Of The American Worker
There was a time in America when virtually anyone that wanted a job could go out and get one and the United States boasted the largest and most prosperous middle class in the history of the world. Sadly, those days are long gone. Back in 1969, 95 percent of all men between the ages of 25 and 54 had a job. But now there are millions of Americans in their prime working years that cannot find a job. Millions of others are working low wage jobs or part-time jobs because that is all they can get. The other day I went to a large retail store and I got into a conversation with the lady wh... more »

End of the Year - end of the world? Brent Miller explains...
Link: http://youtu.be/-Usz5EzMlfY *Brent Miller* and his Horizon Project seems to promote catastrophism, the believe in disaster for our civilization. For as far as I know he never said that the world would end December 21, 2012 (claimed on many websites), but rather 'anywhere between 2008 en 2016'. The world didn't end and won't anywhere between those years. That natural disasters and long, cyclical natural phenomena will occur is no matter of any doubts - they will. That our civilization may come to an end is an open question - it is already stumbling and failing. We live in quit... more »

Russia fires back: At itself!
There must be a mysterious cultural chauvinism which explains why some people or some countries decide to respond by hurting themselves after another person or nation upsets them or somehow insults them. I don't really understand it. It strikes me as completely irrational. Russia has recently decided to enact a law punishing Russian orphans, because the U.S. passed a law aimed at corrupt Russian legislators. Makes sense? This kind of "retaliation" reminds me of the response of many residents in inner-city Los Angeles after acquittals came down for the police officers who had bea...more »

No, the butler didn't do it ...
The cliché in old whodunit films was that the butler always did it. But when a woman mysteriously vanishes or is murdered, the reality is that the guilt party is usually her husband, her boyfriend or a jealous former lover. That appears to be the case in the widely reported assassination of Jennifer Sebena, a patrol officer killed while on duty for the Wauwatosa (Wisc.) Police Department. The AP is reporting that homicide investigators have closed their case. MILWAUKEE—Authorities arrested the husband of a slain suburban Milwaukee police officer who was shot dead on Christmas Eve... more »

It's 2012. Do You Know Where Your Jimmy Hoffa Is?
* * *by Noah* Who doesn't love a mystery? Anytime there is a search for the body of Jimmy Hoffa, it becomes one of my favorite stories of the year. This year it was Roseville, Michigan. It doesn't matter that it's the same story over and over again. Hell, religions are built on the same thing. The "Where is Hoffa?" story always consists of some old guy in Michigan or Indiana having a tip, the blue-wind-breaker feds come in, dig dozens of holes in some other guy's yard, find *nada*, and leave the property looking like the biggest moles in the universe had quite a party. "Our work is... more »
Wild dolphins reported giving gifts to humans
On 23 occasions over the past several years, wild dolphins were observed giving gifts to humans at the Tangalooma Island Resort in Australia. The gifts included eels, tuna, squid, an octopus and an assortment of many other types of different fin fish. While these gifts might not be your choice for a gift to find underneath your Christmas tree, some of the items that were offered to humans are highly valued food sources for cetaceans such as dolphins. ALEC History is Important
Some people tell me that history isn’t very important when it comes to ALEC – that I need to focus on what is happening today. But what is happening today is directly related to what happened in the ALEC past – cause ALEC’s past is ALEC’s present. The “model legislation” ALEC wrote in the 1990’s – they are still trying to pass in some form. So from my viewpoint, it is important to understand that ALEC history. For ALEC - there is really nothing new - it is just the same old same old - with a different name. From Sourcewatch: 2003 The following is the list of "Private Enterprise... more »

Predictions
Dave Weigel has a post up detailing the predictions he got wrong this year. It's admirable...not so much because he's taking responsibility, but because of the effort required. Re-reading my own stuff? No thanks. Now, I do try to keep track of what I've predicted and write about it here if I get it wrong (Tommy Thompson losing his primary? Oops). Fortunately, I think I escaped the election season with relatively few embarrassing ones. Mostly, that's because I try to steer clear of predictions! Not because I'm afraid to (in fact, predictions are pretty popular, and I'm pretty sure th... more »

NYT Defends Fortune 500's Global Human Exploitation
*December 27, 2012* (LD) - While the US funds and arms sectarian death squads across the Arab World under the guise of "promoting democracy," it props its own economy up on a vast network of global human exploitation. From Walmart's sweatshop-death traps in Bangladesh, to Apple's deplorable partnership with Taiwan's Foxconn, millions go underpaid while overworked under dangerous, inhumane conditions to fuel America's consumerist paradigm. Public backlash against these practices range from outrage over human exploitation (less common) to complaints that the West's economies are suff... more »

The jingoistic Kathryn Bigelow
Many commentators, foremost among them the brilliant Glenn Greenwald (and here), have taken director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal to task for the homage to torture called "Zero Dark Thirty." But many of them seem surprised. Having seen Bigelow and Boal's first award-winning film, "The Hurt Locker," only recently, I wasn't. That film too was an exercise in propaganda. All of the killing of innocents was done by the "bad guys," never by the noble American soldiers. In one scene, someone watches the bomb disposal expert from a distance, holding what may (or may not) be a... more »
Blind dog Abby finds her way home in depths of Alaskan winter

Advanced humanoid Roboy to be ‘born’ in nine months

I don't know what to say so I think I'll post Thomas Mulcair's speech in the House of Commons in response to Bill C-45. Here's a noteworthy excerpt: In response to a question, the hon. member for Saint Boniface asked us earlier if we were aware of the global recession. I would remind the member that it was her Minister of Finance who, in the middle of that global crisis in the fall of 2008, denied its existence and refused to take action. Talk about arrogance. How Keynes Got it Right and the 'Right' Got it Wrong!
*by Len Hart, the Existentialist Cowboy* Many have proposed a 'flat' tax. It sounds good but isn't! Flat taxes are not really 'flat'. Ten percent of the income of a poor or middle person is a much, much greater burden than is the same percentage against the income of a millionaire. The difference is that merely keeping a roof over the family's head and food on the table is a MUCH bigger percentage of income/wealth for a poor or middle class family. The very, very wealthy, in fact, find it difficult to spend all their wealth. What is left over after the cost of maintaining a villa in... more »

Doomed To Repeat Themselves
Today, Postmedia's Michael den Tandt asks a question of national import: Can the Conservatives learn from their mistakes? For, indeed, they have made many. But they all add up to one major mistake: The hardest knock of all against the Tories, however, and the one that cuts deepest, is simply that they’ve forgotten how to listen. Their opponents will say they never knew how to begin with. That is untrue. If the Conservatives had a single secret weapon over the past seven years, beyond their extraordinary fundraising network, it was their ear. They had an unerring sense of what, whe... more »
