The federal government will continue to access Americans’ emails without a warrant, after the U.S. Senate dropped a key amendment to legislation now headed to the White House for approval.

Last month, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved an amendment attached to the Video Privacy Protection Act Amendments Act (which deals with publishing users’ Netflix information on Facebook pages) that would have required federal law enforcement to obtain a warrant before monitoring email or other data stored remotely (i.e., the cloud).

The Senate was set to approve the video privacy bill along with the email amendment, which would have applied to a different law, the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act. But then senators decided for reasons unknown to drop the amendment.

*Note: So, the Senate Committee mysteriously stripped the Feinstein Amendment protecting Americans against Indefinite Detention and now they mysteriously stripped another protection off another bill. Just WHO is on that Senate Committee? (I know that Israeli dual citizenship Senator Levin is and most likely the other enemy of the people - Senator Lieberman). Why do we have a full Senate, if a handful of Senators can just nullify whatever the full Senate decides on?

The scientist named to oversee the research arm of Louisiana’s massive Gulf restoration project left behind a major ethics scandal at the University of Texas, where a panel has blasted his role in authoring a deeply flawed pro-fracking paper without disclosing that he’s been paid $1.5 million over five years as a board member of a drilling company. Charles “Chip” Groat — also a former director of the U.S. Geological Survey — was announced as February as the incoming first president of the non-profit The Water Institute of the Gulf, or TWIG, which has received $1 million in taxpayer funding from Louisiana and additional support from the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. The group’s mission is to provide the scientific underpinnings as officials prepare to spend more than $17 billion to restore the Gulf Coast, with some of the funding expected from settling claims against BP for the 2010 spill. From next year, NSW school boys will have access to the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine which will protect them against developing infections that can lead to cancer.

From 2013, boys in Year 7 in all NSW high schools will be offered the HPV vaccine annually. In addition, boys in Year 9 will be offered the vaccine as part of the national ‘catch up’ program in 2013 and 2014.

The NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant, said the highly successful vaccine has already seen a drop in the infections that lead to cervical cancer in females. However, as the vaccine only protects against two of several high-risk types of HPV associated with cancer it is vital that women continue to have regular Pap tests.

“The vaccine, which has been available to girls since 2007, is highly effective in preventing the main types of HPV infection and should be given to adolescents before they become sexually active”, said Dr Chant.

“Extending the vaccination program to boys will help protect them against some of the most common types of HPV infection and against developing a range of cancers.”

Associate Professor Kristine Macartney of the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance said that “as well as protecting males from HPV infections, immunising young men will also help protect women from infection”.

“The HPV vaccine is a strong weapon in preventing this common virus that is easily spread during intimate contact with another person,” Associate Professor Kristine Macartney added.

In 2011, 81% of Year 7 girls received at least one dose of the three-dose course of HPV vaccine.

HPV is the name given to a group of viruses that affect both females and males. Most people who are sexually active will have a genital HPV infection at some time in their lives. HPV infection usually causes no symptoms and goes away by itself. However, in rare cases infection can cause life-threatening cancers.

Almost all cases of cervical cancer and genital warts are due to HPV infection. HPV also causes cancers in other parts of the body.

Information kits will be sent to the parents of all NSW schoolboys eligible to receive the vaccine in early 2013. Students in Year 7 will also be offered vaccination against other diseases, including diphtheria-tetanus-whooping cough (dTpa), hepatitis B and varicella (chicken pox).

Secretary Sebelius gave notice in the January 13, 2011 Federal Register (pages 2383-86) that 41% of all people in the U.S. who were 12 to 15 years old between 1999 and 2004 have dental fluorosis from ingesting too much fluoride, primarily from drinking fluoridated water and swallowing fluoridated toothpaste, both occurring before they were 9 years old.

Dental fluorosis results in lacy white marking on teeth in milder cases and brown stains and pitted, crumbly teeth in moderate to severe cases. Secretary Sebelius states that 3.6% (or 1 in 27) of all people in that age group in the U.S. have moderate to severe dental fluorosis. Many experts state that dental fluorosis is a sign of fluoride poisoning.

There are many other harms caused by water fluoridation. For example, multiple credible scientific studies have found significant increases of hip fracture (and deaths from hip fracture) in people over 65 living in fluoridated areas. Also, many experts state that drinking fluoridated water in reconstituted formula or other drinks is particularly not safe and effective for infants less than one year old.

The alleged benefit of fluoridated water is that it helps prevent the disease of tooth decay. But strong evidence shows that tooth decay has decreased over the last 30 years in unfluoridated countries like Denmark and Germany in the same manner that it has decreased in fluoridated countries like the U.S. and Australia. This is convincing evidence that water fluoridation is not a significant cause of the reduction of tooth decay in the world. Many prominent experts state that fluoridation products are not "safe and effective" to aid in the prevention of tooth decay.

U.S. statutes require substances intended to aid in prevention of disease to be classified as drugs. Therefore, fluoridation products are drugs. HHS and FDA have the responsibility to regulate drugs in the U.S. Yet neither has taken any action to regulate fluoridation products as drugs. This is true despite the fact that 2/3 of the people in the U.S. are being given these drugs through public drinking water. Generally people are given this medication without their permission.

It is generally agreed that primary harm from fluoride is from ingestion and any benefit from fluoride is not from ingestion but rather from topical application (such as use of toothpaste with fluoride). Secretary Sebelius should stop the sale of all water fluoridation products in the U.S. because they are all unapproved drugs. The Secretary has the authority and responsibility from Congress to take this action and we need to convince the Secretary to act.

The destroyers got too greedy, pushed too hard, and may have succeeded in leavening the dough for their own destruction. All around the planet, people are waking up, rising up, taking to the streets and roads, taking stands, taking action. Solidarity is growing. I am so encouraged by the recent upwelling of action from indigenous people, and if you love this earth, the only home we have, I advise supporting their efforts in every way possible. ( Idle No More is one good place to tune into a lot of the current wave of indigenous efforts.)

The destroyers will try to break our solidarity, try to fragment us, try to set us against each other. Don't fall for it. Always look for the routes to the best, most inclusive solidarity and alliance. Always look for the people who want to build and who love to share. I will live to see the day when enough of us builders and sharers connect up to tip the scales or I will die trying.
