Can someone who wears niqab for religious reasons can be required to remove it while testifying? It depends

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 6 minutes ago
R v NS 2012 SCC 72 deals with the issue of a witness covering the face for religious reasons. A summary follows: The issue is when, if ever, a witness who wears a niqab for religious reasons can be required to remove it while testifying. Two sets of * Charter *rights are potentially engaged — the witness's freedom of religion and the accused's fair trial rights, including the right to make full answer and defence. An extreme approach that would always require the witness to remove her niqab while testifying, or one that would never do so, is untenable. The answer lies in a just ... more »

America's War on Basra and Fallujah Grinds On

And you thought America's war on Iraq was over. Remember Basra? Remember Fallujah? They were two Iraqi cities that endured extensive fighting when American and Coalition forces moved in. The guns fell silent years ago but the casualties continue to mount only now, instead of shrapnel wounds, the killers are cancers and birth defects and the finger is being pointed at the Americans love for "DU" or depleted uranium munitions. In Mexico, New Agers say end of Mayan calendar will herald 'cosmic dawn,' not end of world

Matt at The Coming Crisis - 54 minutes ago
The celebration of the cosmic dawn began with a fumbling of the sacred fire meant to honour Friday's end of the Mayan long count calendar. Gabriel Lemus, the white-haired guardian of the flame, burned his finger on the kindling and later somebody knocked a burning log out of the ceremonial brazier onto the wooden stage, before he quickly scooped it up. Still, the white-clad Lemus, like about 1,000 other shamans, seers, stargazers, crystal enthusiasts, yogis, sufis and swamis in a Merida convention centre about an hour and a half from the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, was convinced th... more »

How Nuclear Energy in Japan Got Linked to National Security

On the subject of rotating teacher strikes in Ontario, Tom Walkom offers a little historical perspective: When Bob Rae’s New Democratic Party government overrode collective agreements in 1993, many private sector unions — including the Steelworkers and my union, the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers — broke with their public sector counterparts to support the NDP regime. The essence of their argument would be familiar today: private sector workers had already suffered from what was, at the time, the biggest recession since the 1930s; therefore, public sector workers had ... more »

Gun-rights groups like the NRA are being labeled "terrorists." You know what's next, right? Illegal detention of gun owners aka "domestic terrorists." The government will use guns against gun owners, and with that action they will reveal th... more »

Draw the line - have the local organizational capacity to back it up. *December 18, 2012* (LD) - It goes without saying that the mass media lies - they lied about Iraq in the lead up to a war that in total, killed over 2 million people. They lied about Libya, they are lying about Syria. They lie about vaccines and intentionally try to sell parents the idea of purposefully injecting their children with mercury. Their lies have a single purpose - to serve the special interests that hand them their talking points. Now the mass media is lying about gun violence. The New York Times wro... more »
