Scientists have discovered a planet with conditions that could support life - orbiting a sun that is visible to the naked eye. The world is one of five thought to be circling Tau Ceti, a star 12 light years away which is almost identical to the sun. The mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 26 people dead has put school officials nationwide on edge, with some locking down campuses or calling for more police protection after real or perceived threats. In the last few days, Brooklyn middle-school students were locked inside their school for about an hour after the principal reported gunshots fired across the street. Fear of being "committed" may have caused Connecticut madman, Adam Lanza, to snap

The gunman who slaughtered 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school may have snapped because his mother was planning to commit him to a psychiatric facility, according to a lifelong resident of the area who was familiar with the killer’s family and several of the victims’ families. Adam Lanza, 20, targeted Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown after killing his mother early Friday because he believed she loved the school “more than she loved him,” said Joshua Flashman, 25, who grew up not far from where the shooting took place. An audio recording of this excerpt from "New England Reformers" by Ralph Waldo Emerson (1844) read by Douglas Storm. The same insatiable criticism may be traced in the efforts for the reform of Education. The popular education has been taxed with a want of truth and nature. It was complained that an education to things was not given. We are students of words: we are shut up in schools, and colleges, and recitation-rooms, for ten or fifteen years, and come out at last with a bag of wind, a memory of words, and do not know a thing. Harper - Damned If He Does, Damned If He Don't.

Harper has a choice. He can transform Athabasca into a state-controlled, state-run fossil fuel resource or he can kiss goodbye to his twisted dream of fossil fuel superpowerdom. The Athabasca Tar Sands are running out of steam - literally. There's simply too much shale oil and gas coming on line to make Athabasca bitumen alluring to new investors. Without capital there won't be the major expansion of bitumen production Harper has hinged all of his plans, his dreams on. It's not the first time Athabasca has floundered. The Gun Control Slippery Slope - Mental Health

The establishment of mental health databases This is a case where generalization and over-generalization can not be avoided. When you use the term "mental health" - where can you draw the line? How do you draw the line? Let’s not focus on the guns Guns don’t kill – people do Let’s focus on the people – not the guns. Let’s stop and think for a moment who mig... more »

The Worst Thing About Kerry Becoming Secretary Of State: Anti-Cuba Zealot Bob Menendez GetsThe Chair Of Foreign Relations Committee

*Similar (very bad) agenda when it comes to Cuba* The GOP has been successful in forcing the dependably craven Obama to appoint John Kerry Secretary of State. Who cares which member of the wealthy elite gets these jobs? There's not a jot of difference between John Kerry and Susan Rice policy-wise. But with Kerry out of the way two things happen-- Scott Brown gets a chance to steal a Massachusetts Senate seat and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) becomes chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Bungling Olympic security firm G4S is set to be offered another gold-plated Government contract despite its failure to provide enough staff for London 2012. The company, which MPs want blacklisted from taxpayer-funded deals because the Army had to rescue it this summer, has now been shortlisted to help in several call centres. G4S has been picked by the Department for Work and Pensions above 16 other firms and now looks likely to help advise the public on benefits. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2249980/London-2012-shambles-firm-G4S-set-awarded-150m-Government-contract.html
