11:12 am MSTIf approved, Egypt's new constitution would be a step back into the Mubarak era
THE choice looks simple. Over the coming week Egypt’s electorate of 51m
will have the opportunity to vote yes or no to a new constitution. A
healthy blast of political advertising floods airwaves, billboards and the
internet. Yet this is no cheery exercise in democracy. Seldom has any
nation confronted so momentous a question at a time of such polarisation.
Rival marches of supporters and opponents of President Muhammad Morsi,
vicious street battles and sectarian taunting suggest that any outcome of
the referendum will leave many Egyptians deeply embittered. The political
tension is... more »

Legislative intent enables interpretation but does not grant jurisdiction
Reference re Broadcasting Regulation 2012 SCC 68 dealt with CRTC
jurisdiction. It holds that a declaration of legislative intent does not

Premier Brad Wall Strips SaskPower Bank Account Of $120 Million AND Then Immediately Raises Power Rates To Sask Families

Grand Bargain Passage Strategy
I know Obamabots aren't going to want to hear this, but I suspect that
Obama and Boehner see pretty much eye to eye on the contours of their
"Grand Bargain" and are more concerned with the strategy of getting it

to Peter King (R-NY) and Doc Hastings (R-WA), two of Boehner's closest

A Pipeline to be Built on Lies
A University of British Columbia study finds just one tanker spill from the
Northern Gateway supertanker project could more than wipe out any financial
benefits accruing to the province from the pipeline.
Just one. Remember, local Coast Guard personnel have warned that, when it
comes to a supertanker disaster on the northern coast, it's not "if" but
"when and how often."
Enbridge predictably argues the UBC report is deeply flawed. The company,

Hearsay still a good basis for an appeal
R. v. Edwards, 2012 ONCA 882 allows an appeal based on hearsay:
[1] In our view, the appeal must be allowed. The trial judge
relied on hearsay in reaching the conclusion that the appellant had
knowledge of the contents of the package. The Crown concedes that she erred
in doing so. This constituted an important part of her reasoning both at
paras. 22 and 28 of her reasons. The proviso cannot therefore be applied to
maintain this conviction.

War on Budgeting Shows Up Again
Jonathan Chait has a nice one today in which he looks at GOP attempts to
understand why Barack Obama is pushing tax increases on the rich. The gist
of it is that it apparently doesn't occur to Republicans that Democrats
might support higher taxes because it would reduce the deficit (or, to put
it another way, because it would fund programs Democrats support).
This, of course, is recognizable as the GOP war on budgeting. Under war on
budgeting thinking, each tax and each expenditure is evaluated in isolation
as good or bad; there's no sense that one needs to compare one expenditure

Unlawful Killing: The Murder of Diana Spencer by the Windsor Mafia
The following film is likely to be taken down very soon, so watch it whilst
you can. Diana Spencer was murdered by the Windsor Mafia, after delivering
an heir to the throne (William), and the illegitimate bastard child, Harry
Windsor. The UK Monarchy is a family of pure evil, and not one of them
deserves to escape the justice of the people. Diana herself was no angel,
and indeed was an ardent multi-cultist who went so far as to become
impregnated by an Arab. This was the final straw for the Jewish ruling
family of the UK, and was the reason she was killed. I reproduce the film ... more »

Israeli foreign minister charged with breach of trust
Israel's powerful foreign minister was charged Thursday with breach of
trust, but escaped more serious charges in a fraud and money-laundering
case that could jeopardize his political career and upend the Israeli

The decision by Israel's attorney general capped an investigation into
Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman that stretched back more than a decade.
Lieberman, a close ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is expected

Greece gets new EU aid, declares "Grexit" era dead
The euro zone agreed on Thursday to provide nearly 50 billion euros ($64
billion) in long-delayed aid to Athens, prompting its Prime Minister
Antonis Samaras to declare an end to talk of a Greek exit from the single
currency.
The deal averts a catastrophic default and secures Greece's survival in the

repeatedly missed fiscal targets agreed with the EU and the International

By the blacklisting Tuesday, Dec. 11, of the Jabhat al-Nusra group fighting

1. The 10,000 fighters of this al Qaeda affiliate are the best-trained and

2. Jabhat al-Nusra fields 3,000 fighters out of the mostly Free Syrian

The Ukrainian government has appealed for the release of a Ukrainian
journalist abducted in Syria two months ago amid reports her life is in
danger.
Anhar Kochneva, who was working as a freelancer for Russian and Ukrainian
media, is believed to have been kidnapped near the city of Homs.
Several videos apparently released by her captors show her asking for her
kidnappers' demands to be met.
Initially they called for a ransom of $50m (£31m; 38m euros) to be paid.

Where political debate is concerned, many (if not all) the problems

Interpreting the Fed
*My friend and sometime coauthor Larry Ball sends me his quick analysis of
the Federal Reserve's recent announcement:*
I think the FOMC announcement is big news: for the first time, the Fed
clearly says it will be more dovish in the future than the pre-crisis
Taylor Rule (TR) dicates.
In my estimation, the pre-crisis TR is something like the following for the
real interest rate r:
r = 2.0 - (1.5)(u-u*) + (0.5)(pi-2.0).
Let’s say u* is still 5.0. Then if u=6.5 and pi=2.5, the TR says r =

Unmasking the Brotherhood: Syria, Egypt, and Beyond
*December 13, 2012* (Stop Imperialism) - The complexities of the Arab
Spring and the struggle for political freedom throughout the Arab world
should not obscure what has now become an absolutely essential
understanding for all anti-imperialists: the Muslim Brotherhood is one of
the most powerful weapons of the Western ruling class in the Muslim world.
While that may be a difficult pill for some to swallow for emotional or
psychological reasons, one need look no further than the insidious role the
organization is playing in Syria and the abuses of power and human rights
of the gove... more »
Meaning, Consciousness, and the Mayan Prophecy
Although my name is spelled M-a-j-i-a, it is pronounced Maya. My parents
didn't know how to spell the name.
The story is that my dad had a dream he would have a blonde haired,
brown-eyed daughter named Maya. He claims he had never heard the name
before, so didn't know how to spell it. His family is of Swedish-Italian
descent so it was probably the Swedish influence that led to the insertion
of the nonsensical "j" in my name.
His dream wasn't actually prophetic because I have blue eyes.
Anyway, I've always been interested in the Mayans for obvious reasons.
The Mayan prophecy of 201... more »
It's The Terror War System, Stupid!
*Blowback is not a bitch. Blowback is a beautiful bride. And The CIA's
priests of power have ordained a permanent marriage between U.S. policy and
blowback.*
*"The Terror War is not an event, or a campaign, or even a crusade; it is a
system.* Its purpose is not to eliminate "terrorism" (however this
infinitely elastic term is defined) but to perpetuate itself, to do what it
does: make war. This system can be immensely rewarding, in many different
ways, for those who operate or assist it, whether in government, media,
academia, or business. This too is a self-sustaining dynamic, a... more »
"A Look to the Heavens"
“In front of a famous background of stars and galaxies lies some of
Earth's more unusual trees. Known as quiver trees, they are actually
succulent aloe plants that can grow to tree-like proportions. The quiver
tree name is derived from the historical usefulness of their hollowed
branches as dart holders. Occurring primarily in southern Africa, the trees
pictured in the below 16-exposure composite are in Quiver Tree Forest
located in southern Namibia.

Some of the tallest quiver trees in the park are estimated to be about 300
years old. Behind the t... more »
A tale of Lemonade Stand Operators and Snake Oil Distillers
A tale of lemonade stand operators and snake oil distillers....by Grant G
*"Released on Thursday, B.C.'s public accounts for the fiscal year
2009/2010 conclusively prove that the pre-election fiscal plan foisted on
British Columbians by Premier Gordon Campbell and his BC Liberals on Feb
17, 2009 was the worst -- the most egregious, the most deceptive --
"Fudge-it Budget" in provincial history.*
* **The public accounts show that the Campbell Liberals inflated revenues
in Victoria's main operating account, the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF),
by a stunning $2.558 billion -- yes, Bi... more »
Menards - Woe is Me.
From:Uppity Wisconsin
Progressive News from the Cheddarsphere
The Menards chain has been planning to move into Missouri with new stores
in three St. Louis suburbs, but yesterday the firm unexpectedly announced
that one of those stores, in suburban O'Fallon, is being dropped from the
expansion plan. Why? A Menards spokesman explained to local news media that
... deep breath... it's Obama's fault. The unnamed spokesperson said (according
to a St. Louis TV station):
“I’m very sorry, but we are a family owned business and with the Obama
Administration scaring the dickens out of all ... more »
Some good people get good Dem Senate committee slots -- but then there are also those other people
*Yes, Senator Warren is getting that Banking Committee slot!*
*by Ken*
It reminds me of nothing so much as the day when solons of college
fraternities break the good news to such of their incoming hopefuls which
of them have made the grade and will be received unto the elect. With,
maybe a few differences.
(1) When it comes to apportioning committee slots to Senate Democrats for
the 114th Congress, there's only one solon: Majority Leader Harry Reid.
Today, as you probably know, was the day when Leader Harry Reid manned the
phones spreading the good news. I don't know how many of t... more »

Cree block highway
The Samson Cree Nation issued a statement Tuesday
"The Answer..."
"Very few beings really seek knowledge in this world - few really ask. On
the contrary, they try to wring from the unknown the answers they have
already shaped in their own minds - justifications, confirmations, forms of
consolation without which they can't go on. To really ask is to open the
door to a whirlwind. The answer may annihilate the question and the
questioner."

Over angry protests, Michigan passes 'right-to-work' legislation
Over the chants of thousands of angry protesters, Republican lawmakers made
Michigan a right-to-work state Tuesday, dealing a devastating and
once-unthinkable defeat to organized labour in a place that has been a
bastion of the movement for generations.
The GOP-dominated House ignored Democrats' pleas to delay the final passage
and instead approved two bills with the same ruthless efficiency that the
Senate showed last week. One measure dealt with private-sector workers, the
other with government employees. Republican Gov. Rick Snyder signed them
both within hours, calling them "pro... more »
