Russia sent warships to the Mediterranean to prepare a potential evacuation of its citizens from Syria, a Russian news agency said on Tuesday, a sign President Bashar al-Assad's key ally is worried about rebel advances now threatening even the capital. Moscow acted a day after insurgents waging a 21-month-old uprising obtained a possible springboard for a thrust into Damascus by seizing the Yarmouk Palestinian camp, an urban zone just 2 miles from the heart of the city, activists said. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/12/18/us-syria-crisis-idUSBRE8AJ1FK20121218

The Unequal State of America: Redistributing up

In the town that launched the War on Poverty 48 years ago, the poor are getting poorer despite the government's help. And the rich are getting richer because of it. The top 5 percent of households in Washington, D.C., made more than $500,000 on average last year, while the bottom 20 percent earned less than $9,500 - a ratio of 54 to 1. That gap is up from 39 to 1 two decades ago. It's wider than in any of the 50 states and all but two major cities. Honduran economy depends on migrants' transfers to families

A couple of stories in the newspapers this week suggest the best way North Americans could help Honduras is to let a few more people head north to find jobs. La Prensa reported remittances - the money sent back by Hondurans working in the U.S. - will be up 12 per cent this year. That would bring the money sent home to about $3.2 billion, or about 18 per cent of the country’s GDP. Put another way, without remittances the GDP per capita would drop from about $4,400 to $3,600. Some of the newspapers today claiming that the recent massacres in the United States are a result of America's special culture. I disagree. The problem, bluntly, is access to guns. That's is why the murder rate is so very high in the North of Canada; it is because people have access to guns and disputes which would otherwise end in a fistfight end shooting. Disturbed people with guns are far more dangerous than disturbed people with, say, knives. Limit gun access and the number of shooting deaths will fall.

Most Americans know corporations run the nation and long ago ceased to be good citizens. U.S. Corporations have endorsed a sociopathic stance of short term profits as their objective exclusive to all others. Profits above people is now the norm. Dr. Ralph Gomory, who contributes to this site and Dr. Richard Sylla have dismantled the U.S. corporation and even put it back together again in an essay published by American Academy of Arts & Sciences. What Fed Exit?

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 5 hours ago
A decision by the Federal Reserve to expand its bond buying next week is likely to prompt policy makers to rewrite their 18-month-old blueprint for an exit from record monetary stimulus. Under the exit strategy, the Fed would start selling bonds in mid-2015 in a bid to return its holdings to pre-crisis proportions in two to three years. An accelerated buildup of assets would also mean a faster pace of sales when the time comes to exit -- increasing the risk that a jump in interest rates would crush the economic recovery. ... It was not the supposed imminent collapse of the Syrian regime that dominated the recent meeting of the Friends of Syria in Marrakech but the thorny subject of al-Nusra, one of the armed resistance groups operating in the country, which the US has just classified as a "foreign terrorist organisation". The chairman of the Syrian National Coalition called for the US to reconsider its decision; the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamad Tayfur condemned it as wrong and hastily made. Darwin Never Met Aliens With Paul Schroeder

This item by Paul Schroeder tackles the broad rethink that is taking place in the theory of evolution. As ever we keep looking for an externalization rather than explanation. A logic reality check is in order. An external reality must also self evolve. We are merely demanding that life as we know it be self evolving here on Earth and that is not impossible at all, although it is completely plausible that we got a jump start along the way, but it must not be foundational unless life arose first inside the Sun. What is the problem is that we have mistaken the library for... more »

The great GM lies: A Tory minister insists GM crops 'are a good thing'. Really?

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 11 hours ago
There is no doubt that it was a declaration of the Government’s colours on genetically modified farming when Environment Secretary Owen Paterson rounded on critics of GM technology as ‘humbugs’ last week, and insisted GM food should be grown and sold widely in Britain. During the course of his ringing endorsement, he managed to spark outrage and alarm by claiming ‘there isn’t a single piece of meat being served [in a typical London restaurant] where a bullock hasn’t eaten some GM feed’. His belligerent intent was quite clear. The message he wanted to get across was that GM crops are... more »

Even without Congress, Obama could act to restrict guns

Unburdened by re-election worries and empowered by law to act without Congress, U.S. President Barack Obama could take action to improve background checks on gun buyers, ban certain gun imports and bolster oversight of dealers. Prospects for gun control legislation intensified in the wake of the school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, as more pro-gun rights lawmakers said on Monday they were open to the possibility while Obama and three cabinet members met at the White House to discuss the subject. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/12/18/us-usa-shooting-obama-options-idUSBRE8BH04... more »
