10:31 am MSTRalph Goodale's Plaintive Plea
When I read it my gut reaction was "So?" "It" was an e-mail from Ralph Goodale warning that the New Democrats are on the verge of a first, out fundraising the Liberals for an entire year. The Libs apparently need $100,000 to close the gap on the NDP, assuming there are no particularly generous New Democrat supporters writing cheques between now and New Year's Eve. The way the plea was written you might have imagined the Red Army was massed on the gates of Berlin. I like Ralph Goodale. I think he's a fine and honourable man and a first-rate Parliamentarian. The Hoover Institute's Amazing Discoveries
I previously characterized much of the research published by "reformers" as evidence-influenced, as opposed to evidence-driven. I cited criticisms by Bruce Baker and Julia Sass Rubin of the new Hoover Institute CREDO study of New Jersey charter schools. Today, however, I would like praise the conservative think tank. “Charter School Performance in New Jersey,” includes a repudiation of everything that the Hoover Institute has advocated. It compares outcomes for 77% of their study's charter school students with those of their peers in traditional public schools (TPS). It finds ... more »

Obama says failure to reach fiscal deal would hurt markets
Financial markets would be affected adversely if U.S. lawmakers fail to agree on a "fiscal cliff" deal before Tuesday, President Barack Obama said in an interview broadcast on Sunday, while urging Congress to act quickly to extend tax cuts for middle-class Americans. Lawmakers are seeking a last-minute deal that would set aside $600 billion in tax increases and across-the-board government spending cuts that are set to start within days. If Congress does not make that happen, the first bill brought up in the new year would be to reduce taxes for middle-income families, Obama told NB... more »

5 Facts To Take Away From The Tragedy In Newtown
Andrew Criscione Speak Liberty Now The recent school shooting in Newtown that killed 20 children and 6 adults is a horrific tragedy, and there are five very important facts to take away from it. *1.) Gun-free zones are extremely dangerous.* In Switzerland, where many adults carry semi-automatic weapons while in the course of their daily activities, “the gun crime rate is so low that statistics are not even kept.” (1) On the other extreme is Norway, where guns are very tightly controlled. This enabled a shooter to casually take his time massacring over 70 children at the equivalen... more »

Earlier in the year I decided to start a yearly bird list along with the date (when applicable) of when I had my first sighting. In the sky, face on, was a 'helicopter'. I must have been at altitude also, or in a skyscraper to have seen it from this angle. It was a very strange helicopter. Furthermore, for the moment, there is not the slightest indication that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has any intention of accepting the Obama administration’s latest plan for a nuclear deal. Lincoln and Slavery
But the president resisted. In Lincoln’s view, the end of slavery was not a matter of if; it was a question of when, and how. Long before he became a national figure, he had predicted that the time would come when all Americans would be forced to choose sides over slavery, and he knew which side he would be on. Slavery was “a great and crying injustice,” he said, “an enormous national crime.” To one friend he said simply: “Slavery is doomed.” On another occasion he said: “I am naturally anti-slavery. If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong. I can not remember when I did not so th... more »

First we read about the horrific gang rape, with spectators. Then we learn that the victim has died. Then, on top of all that, we hear authorities may seek the death penalty for the perpetrators. Kings dodge big collapse to beat Knicks on buzzer-beater
I don't watch every Sacramento Kings game. And when I do tune in, I will often surf other channels and miss good portions of their games. The problem for me--a bandwagon fan, if you will--is that the Kings lose most of the time. It's just not that much fun to see my local outfit stink. But last night, aided by the New York Knicks not having their best player, Carmelo Anthony, available, and not having their starting point guard, Felton Spencer, healthy enough to play, the Kings held on for a 1 point victory at home on a last-second shot. Earlier in the game Sacramento was up by ... more »
What Mattered This Week?
Senate reform matters, so I'll say that the bipartisan group put out a proposal that wasn't a complete joke probably counts. If you don't like that: Hawaii's new Senator may well be there for 25 years or more, so that matters, too. Can I use that it doesn't matter whether a fiscal cliff deal is reached this week or next? Because I don't think that it does. Matter, that is. Starts mattered after that, though... Well, that's what I have. What do you think mattered this week?

US Senate leaders work to avoid New Year's 'fiscal cliff'
Congressional negotiators burrowed into their Capitol offices on Saturday to see if they can stop the U.S. economy from falling off of a "fiscal cliff" in just three days when the biggest tax increases ever to hit Americans in one shot are scheduled to begin. Aides to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell were expected to work through the day on a possible compromise that would set aside $600 billion in tax increases and across-the-board government spending cuts that are set to kick in next week. http://www.reuters.com/article/2... more »
