Guns and Strategy
I strongly recommend Jonathan Chait's largely pessimistic view (from the
point of view of those who want legislation) of the chances of getting
anything restricting guns in any way whatsoever through the House. And if
that's correct -- if conservative Republicans remain dead set against
anything at all -- then there's almost nothing Barack Obama can do about it
(see, too, David Frum's view, which points out the possibility that
presidential public leadership could easily polarize the debate and
therefore backfire).
That said: I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility that legis... more »
Where does the press corps get its facts!
*MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2012*
*Does Scott Pelley actually know that:* We’ve been struck by the maudlin
nature of much of the coverage of the most recent mass shooting.
To our ear, Alexandra Petri’s column was wondrously faux at the Post. But
so were large amounts of the coverage, as journalists took turns assuring
the nation that they’ve never been so upset.
This morning, on Way Too Early, even Mike Barnicle played that card. For
ourselves, we didn’t especially believe him. That said, if he wasn’t upset
before this, he too must be mentally ill.

Tomorrows World had a mobile telephone in 1979

telephone to go mobile. In this report from a longer programme, Michael
Rodd (pictured above) examines a British prototype for a cordless telephone
that allows the user to make calls from anywhere. Also included at the end
of this item is a rather nice out-take as Rodd also experiences the first

Kim Jong-un Beefs Up Security Amid Fear of Unrest: Reason why the rocket was fired so hurriedly in North Korea?
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has apparently stationed around 100 armored
vehicles at his house, summer home and other facilities for fear of a
military coup or uprising, sources say.
Kim "is extremely nervous about the possibility of an emergency developing

According to the source, Kim recently ordered officials to "place top

a result, the venues of events he attends are swarming with guards carrying

The Newtown shooting last Friday morning is virtually unique in
American history not only because it's, by far, the worst elementary school
shooting of all time but because the usual gun nuts have gone into hiding.
The Sandy Hook massacre apparently is proving to be the tipping point
that's going to force a meaningful debate on gun control, one in which our
president, who has never once uttered the words "gun" and "control" in the

Andison v. Katz, 2012 MBCA 107 makes clear that a cause of action arises in

not mean discoverability is met but rather the cause is complete:
27 Thus, it is clear that the damage component of the cause

Fire at Fukushima?

There have been quite a few unusual observations of the plant since the 7.3
earthquake this week. If there was a fire, citizen monitoring stations
should be showing peaks, depending upon which way the wind was blowing
Citizens in Japan and those downstream of the jet stream should look for
any unusual monitoring results:

The Syrian-Turkish Border Is A Flashpoint For WWIII
*Source of photo*.
There are many regional flashpoints in the Middle East, but military
experts believe that the Syrian-Turkish border is the most volatile.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich *said in
November*that, "The militarization of the Syrian-Turkish border is a
dismal signal."
At the moment, there is a low-level conflict on the Syrian-Turkish
border.
There have been *clashes throughout the past year*, often times stoked
by
the FSA, the NATO-backed Jihadist insurgency that is fighting Assad.
But if the United States government has anything to say abou... more »
Pennsylvania nuclear power plant: Unexpected shutdown reported
An energy company says it’s trying to figure out why a central Pennsylvania
nuclear power plant reactor shut down unexpectedly.
PPL Corp says Unit 2 at the Susquehanna nuclear facility near Berwick shut
down early Sunday morning. The company says the reactor is safe and stable.
In a statement, Allentown-based PPL says the shutdown occurred during
routine testing of a valve on the unit’s main turbine system.

Ecuador declares orange alert near Tungurahua volcano
ECUADOR has issued an orange alert - the second-highest warning level - for
towns near the Tungurahua volcano, as its level of activity rose, civil
defence officials say.
The area of the warning covers the adjacent provinces of Tungurahua and
Chimborazo, according to the national civil defence agency.
Greater activity has been building since Wednesday, along with a slight
increase in gas emissions from the 5029-metre volcano, located about 135km
south of the capital Quito, the Geophysical Institute said.

Mayan 'death and rebirth' date marks the perfect time to tackle planet's crisis
At 12 minutes past noon last Wednesday, 12.12.12, 12 minutes of wintry
stillness was broken by the low chime of a gong. The crowd gathered around
the Chalice Well beneath Glastonbury Tor linked hands, looked skywards,
then touched the earth. A multitude of others did the same across the world
– only this place, as everyone knows, is rather special.
For many people, these days between last Wednesday, 12 December, and the
winter solstice on 21 December next Friday constitute a portal of some
kind, based upon a convergence of predictions in ancient calendars, notably
that of the Maya i... more »
Emerging Europe: Goal challenged
For
the countries of central and eastern Europe, the unassailable momentum
of integration with Europe’s west has been a double-edged sword. For
much
of the past decade, the wealth gap between west and east has narrowed as
inflows of cheap capital helped power economic growth in the former
communist countries.

Who Says Obama's Policies Are Considered Republican? Anyone With A Brain-- Including President Barack H. Obama
If you've followed this blog with any regularity over the past few years,
you've probably noticed an uncomfortable disdain for Barack Obama-- going
back to right after he was elected to the Senate and picked Joe Lieberman
as his mentor, and continuing right up to the current attempts to work with
Boehner to balance the budget on the backs on the elderly and the middle
class. The wealthy and powerful have continued to do extraordinarily well
under Obama... regular working families, much less so. And, as Dan Rather
told a somewhat stunned Rachel Maddow Thursday night (watch the video... more »
Robotic arm: Paralyzed woman's thoughts
*According to US study, unrivalled control of a robotic arm has been
achieved using a paralysed woman's thoughts.*Jan, who is 53 and paralyzed
from the neck down, was able to deftly pick up, move and place a range of
objects in a manner similar to a normal arm. Brain implants were used to
manage the robotic arm and Jan was diagnosed with spinocerebellar
degeneration 13 years ago and progressively lost control of her body. She
is now incapable to move her arms.
The pulses of electricity in the brain are then translated into commands to
move the arm, which bends at the elbow, wris... more »

Abraham Lincoln believed in life after death, *possessed psychic abilities*,
and famously dreamed about his own demise shortly before it happened. He is
not alone. Philosophers, mystics, poets, and prophets all speak about the
eternal life of the soul and the existence of a world beyond this one.

experiment to demonstrate human self-awareness and the substantiality of

Did You Know That...
Kleenex-brand tissues started out as thin, gauzelike paper called
Cellucotton that Kimberly-Clark produced as liners for GIs' gas masks
during World War 1. When the war ended, the company used the surplus to
make "Kleenex Kerchiefs", which it heavily promoted as "the Sanitary Cold
Cream Remover". Women all over the country scrambled to buy the handy
things. Until then, they'd used washcloths and towels to take off their
makeup. But they soon began writing to the company with a complaint: Their
husbands and children were forever snatching the Kerchiefs to blow their
noses! The folks... more »
Jewish Controlled Hollywood Playing People As Suckers Again: Newest Crap Movie, "Zero Dark Thirty" Is Blatant "Global War On Terror" Propaganda!
While being laid up today, I actually turned on the "Talmudvision" to watch

NHL hockey lockout (Yes, this is, or was, the only professional sport I

disgusting. It was for a new Jewish Hollywood created piece of crap movie
to be released in January, called "Zero Dark Thirty". I could not believe
the blatant lies and pure propaganda I was seeing... It was almost as bad
as the other piece of crap laugher of a movie released recently called... more »

Oh, the weather outside's not frightful (and by the pool's delightful)
Copan Christmas elves
I was sitting by the pool today, sipping a *cerveza*and thinking about what
a very different Christmas I’ll be having this year.
This is my first Christmas ever outside of Canada. I’m not the type to
make too big a deal out of Christmas, but I did have a few rituals around
the season. The absence of those rituals this year is making me newly aware
of the ones I’m missing and the ones I never did take much of a shine to.
Cold weather, for instance. Maybe I dreamed of a white Christmas a few
times as a kid, but that desire pretty much went away once I started to ... more »
Malevolent Maples Destined for Oblivion
Wit's End - 15 hours ago
For most of my life, I had always thought of the world as a splendid,
benevolent, and resilient place. I remember when I was young going out to
the lawn with an iron tool. It had a turned, grooved wooden handle, and at
the end of the long spike, rusty under chipped paint, was a sharp forked
tip. My job was to gouge out the stubborn deep taproots of the shiny,
noisily yellow dandelions...before they turned into sparkly floating
snowflakes that made wishes come true. If there were chemical herbicides
available back then, we couldn't afford to buy any - but there was plenty

Why Strong Science Assessors Matter
In my latest Bridges column I connect Hurricane Sandy to Mad Cow disease
through the repeatedly-learned lesson that effective use of science in
decision making depends upon having strong institutions. Here is how it
starts:
Last month in Berlin, I participated in the 10th anniversary conference of
the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment – the Bundesinstitut für
Risikobewertung (BfR). The BfR is one of a number of European organizations
that Catherine Geslain-Lanéelle, executive director of the European Food
Safety Authority (EFSA), characterized at the conference as "the... more »
