Peter Jackson reveals the Red Epic secrets behind The Hobbit
Diet and filmmaking legend Peter Jackson's given us another insight into the making of the Hobbit movies, and this time he's talking about his envious collection of tech. Filming with no less than 48 Red Epic cameras at 48fps in full 5k resolution might sound fantastic, but it hasn't all been a bed of cotton candy. Two 3D cameras need to be mounted at the same "interocular" (the inch-or-so di
Which devices will get Ice Cream Sandwich?
Engadget • by Brad Molen • 1 day ago Android 4.0 is coming, and it's going to be glorious. Now that we know exactly what the Ice Cream Sandwich is made of, only one question remains: exactly which phones will get the green light to upgrade to the newest version of Google's mobile OS? Details are beginning to trickle out from the woodwork, and below the break you can check out our list of lucky devices that have been confirmed to
Google+ gets baked-in YouTube functionality, seeks your +1s
Suffice it to say, Google's been steamrolling through its services this week and laying down a variety of updates and goodies. Just a day after its short-lived Gmail iOS app was released, Mountain View's veered its wheels toward the "pluses" in its portfolio. To start, Chrome users will find two new extensions, including a +1 button and a Google+ Notifications box, to more easily mark their f
Commodore USA goes Extreme, stuffs a 2.2GHz quad-core i7 into its C64x
We've loved Commodore USA's C64 computer recreations ever since it began producing them back in 2010. Much to our delight, the company recently outed its third variant, the C64x Extreme. This unit features the '80s flair we've come to appreciate, but supercharged to 2011 spec. Crammed inside its case is a 2.2GHz Intel core i7 quad-core CPU (capable of turbo boosting to 3.3GHz), 8GB of DDR3 RAM,

Lighting Vest
The Lightning Vest is one of the coolest bike accessories I have seen in a while! It is a hand-netted, highly visible safety vest made from a custom developed 3M reflective material. It can be worn all year, day or night and layered over jackets or t-shirts. Neck opening is wide enough to pass over your helmet and netting is large enough for your hand to access your pockets. It is lightweight and

Quick little UI feedback tip
Sometimes when I’m giving feedback on a UI, and I’m pointing out a spacing detail, I upload a little screenshot to Basecamp or Campfire to help make sure the feedback is clear. I wanted to share a little tweak to the feedback which I think is ultimately more useful. In this example I’m pointing out that the space above and below an element is not equal (and I think it should be). I used to d

Mac users, this is really worth checking out. As you work on local projects, you have your HTML and CSS open in your text editor of choice, and the web page open in a browser. When "minimal viable product" doesn't work
One of my favorite ideas in the new wave of programming is the notion of minimal viable product. The thought is that you should spec and build the smallest kernel of your core idea, put it in the world and see how people react to it, then improve from there. For drill bits and other tools, this makes perfect sense. Put it out there, get it used, improve it. The definition of "minimal" is obvious.
All the Groupon IPO really proves is that the bubble is back
After a wave of reports that Groupon would have to drop the price on its initial public offering or even cancel it altogether because of skepticism about the company and its business model, the pendulum of optimism swung back again by Friday and the shares listed at $20 — well above the range Groupon was originally planning — and jumped as high as $30 when they first opened. So what happened? Did
General Motors deal would be huge coup for Google Apps
General Motors is reportedly thinking of deploying Google Apps to 100,000 or more of its users. If the automaker does commit to Google Apps, it would be a huge validation of Google’s productivity applications in the enterprise. A big GM contract would be especially sweet for Google because GM is a huge Microsoft shop, and Google is fighting Micrososft in a protracted, multi-front battle for the m

The Most Interesting Papers at the Infovis Conference
This post was written by Kim Rees, a partner at Periscopic (@periscopic), an interactive design firm specializing in data visualization and information presentation. altitude memo block
After 18 cities, I’ve finally started adjusting to life on the road. One thing that’s been helpful is letting go of my digital list-making and embracing paper to-do lists again. Something about crumpling up a real piece of paper and throwing it away when the list is finished beats that “crinkling paper” noise my computer’s trashcan makes. This memo block at Canoe makes lists a little more interes

homesick texan carnitas
I am embarrassed by how long it took me to discover carnitas, or “little meats” that are usually braised then roasted, and are as far I quickly became concerned, the very best thing to pile on a blistered corn tortilla. I had my first one just a couple years ago. I was pregnant at the time and protein-rich foods were ten times as delicious as they normally were so when I became obsessed with havi

pear cranberry and gingersnap crumble
In my defense, I resisted this crumble for possibly even a single hour before going to the kitchen to assemble the ingredients. A whole hour, an hour in which we could have had a buttery, spiced gingersnap and brown sugar crumbled lid atop a glurp-ing puddle of soft, sweet pears and slumped, tart cranberries, bubbling through cracks in the rubbled surface. An hour in which I instead thought there

Google Reader Alternatives?
There were a bunch of changes to Google Reader, which in my opinion left it a worse product overall. They removed features I used, like the ability to share items to an RSS feed, which I used to use to build the “Posts From Other Blogs” list that was in my side-bar until today. They also killed off the statistics for individual feeds. (Or hid them very well, as I cannot find them.) Of course, th

German courts grant injunction against Apple for Motorola patent infringement
Courts in Germany have found in favor of Motorola in two cases of patent infringement by Apple. These are the same types of proceedings that Apple has used to get Samsung products pulled from shelves and show floors in the past, and the current documents from Germany look to affect all Apple mobile products, and have enabled damages that go back to April 2003. But let's not get too exci
Apple Found Guilty Of Violating Motorola Patents In Germany – Apple Ban Soon To Follow?
I didn’t see this coming. Giving Apple a little taste of their own medicine it seems that Motorola has won an injunction against Apple for patent infringement in Germany. The ruling came from a Mannheim Regional Court barring the sale of any Apple device that infringes on two of Motorola Mobility’s 2003 patents. The 1st Apple violating patent is related to GSM, UMTS and 3G — while the 2nd is

Boston Dynamic’s PETMAN Robot
It’s not every day you get to see a demonstration of something that previously only existed in works of fiction.
