Terrorist attacks soar, India among most affected nations: Study

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 5 minutes ago
The number of terrorist attacks each year has more than quadrupled in the decade since September 11, 2001, a study released on Tuesday said, with Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan the most affected. The number of annual deaths in attacks, however, peaked in 2007 -- the height of the Iraq conflict -- and has been falling ever since. The survey reported 7,473 fatalities in 2011, 25 percent down on 2007. That figure included dead suicide bombers and other attackers http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Terrorist-attacks-soar-India-among-most-affected-nations-Study/articleshow/17476111.... more »

Celeste, a new arrival at Angelitos I wanted to share the Christmas letter of the young Philadelphia woman who is trying to start a better foster home/orphanage for the children in Copan. My heart is with the kids at the current children's home, Angelitos Felices, but my dreams are pinned on Emily Monroe, as her project would definitely be the long-term solution to the endless problems at Angelitos. Egypt: Clashes Outside Presidential Palace

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 14 minutes ago
Egyptian riot police have fired tear gas at thousands of protesters in the streets outside the presidential palace. President Mohamed Morsi reportedly left the building as the protesters - who are demonstrating against sweeping new powers he granted himself and a new constitution that was rushed through by his supporters - broke through police lines. The tear gas was fired after a number of people cut through barbed wire erected a few hundred metres from the palace. The police then retreated allowing the protesters to reach the palace walls. http://news.sky.com/story/1020619/egypt-... more »

For FLA purposes a severance package is property on a date only if there is a fixes right to the severance on that date

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 16 minutes ago
Dembeck v. Wright, 2012 ONCA 852 holds: [50] From these decisions it is clear that for a severance package to be considered property at the date of separation, there must be a right or entitlement to it at that date. As previously indicated, the *FLA*, in defining property does not distinguish between date of marriage and date of separation. It follows that, for a severance package to be considered property as of either of the two dates that form the basis of any equalization calculation, there must be a right or entitlement to it at that date.

Nato Backs Patriot Missile Systems For Turkey

Nato has given the go ahead for Patriot surface-to-air missiles to be deployed along Turkey's border with Syria, according to an official. Turkey, which has strongly supported rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar al Assad, said it wanted the missile interceptor systems to counter the threat of attacks from Syrian weapons, possibly carrying chemical weapons. C'mon, NR!

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 1 hour ago
It's natural and normal that supporters of the majority party in the Senate will move over time to oppose filibusters and other minority protections, while supporters of the minority party will come to embrace those procedural checks. That opens everyone up to charges of hypocrisy, but I'm not concerned about that; I like that it gives everyone a chance to argue both sides of the issue, since both sides have a good deal of merit -- there's quite a bit to the notion of using a simple majority vote as a decision rule, but there's also quite a bit to the limits of majoritarianism. Here's an article about global tax avoidance through tax havens: The scale of the theft is staggering. Somewhere between $21 and $32 trillion is hidden behind the vast walls of tax haven secrecy. That’s the equivalent of one third of all global annual income. Somewhere between 60 and 70% of all international trade flows through them so that profits can be siphoned off untaxed. The scale alone means tax havens have a material impact on levels of global inequality and poverty. But more insidious is what they actively facilitate. Mr Osborne Stand Up Against Tax Abusers

Martyn Daniels at Brave New World - 13 hours ago
This week, George Osborne stands in front of the UK parliament and delivers his Autumn Report. As the UK economy continues to ‘flat line’ some will say this is his most important report. It is his opportunity to make a tremendous bold moral statement on tax avoidance that will do much more for UK moral and business than tweeking the odd penny on personal taxes and duty. It will also send a clear message to those who avoid UK tax and play EU registration games, that enough is enough. We may be split over Leverson and the press solution but we are as one on the morals of some of the... more »

Bill Moyers Grapples With An American Religion Of Inequality

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 13 hours ago
A couple of weeks ago, Bill Moyers gave a talk , The Religion of Inequalityat the Union Theological Seminary in memory of Forrest Church. You can-- and you should-- read the whole thing at the link in the last sentence. Here are a few excerpts worth pondering this evening as our political elites-- our ever so distant political elites-- decide how they're going to break the bad news to us. [The song above is by an Australian band we signed to Reprise, Not Drowning, Waving, whose name is based on a poem by Stevie Smith, that is much beloved of Bill Moyers. Few in America ever heard ... more »

*Enjoy, readers! * "Accountability lost in murky fish supply chain; Restaurants blame Boston supplier for delivering wrong fish" by Beth Daley and Jenn Abelson | Globe Staff, December 02, 2012 The $22.95 serving of cod brought to tables, and supplied by Boston-based North Coast Seafoods, is not always the local product restaurant executives say they pay for. DNA testing commissioned by the Globe this summer showed it to be, on that occasion, Pacific cod, which is usually much cheaper — and to many palates, not as tasty.... US Repeats Syrian Chemical Weapons "Warnings"

US repeats same tired, desperate accusations that the Syrian army is preparing to use "chemical weapons." *December 4, 2012* (LD) - Once again, the US has issued a warning against Syria deploying "chemical weapons" citing "intelligence reports that the Damascus government is preparing such munitions for possible use." No evidence was provided, nor any reasonable explanation as to why the Syrian government would deploy such weapons when, after over 2 years, the majority of the Syrian people still stand behind the government while terrorist forces flooding over Syria's borders have b... more »

When The Worlds of Politics And Entertainment Collide

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 14 hours ago
People in the fields of entertainment and sports who play politics with tragedy can influence public opinion about a controversial issue in ways that public officials cannot. The National Gun Confiscation League, formerly known as the National Football League, is using tragedy to advance the anti-democratic agenda of the rogue Obama regime. Alex Jones speaks about Obama's sinister plan to seize the guns of American dissidents and patriots.

Truth Militia Radio with John Friend

John Friend at John Friend's Blog - 14 hours ago
I just finished the seventh edition of Truth Militia Radio with John Friend. My guest William Finck and I discussed international Jewry, Adolf Hitler, *Mein Kampf*, and the differences between international capitalism and international Marxism on the one hand, and National Socialism and fascism on the other. Be sure to check out *Christogenea.org* and *The Mein Kampf Project*, two of William's websites that I frequent. You can download the entire program *here* or subscribe to Truth Militia Radio via iTunes *here*. Thanks for tuning in!

( I was employed at a 'halfway house' for paranoid schizophrenics at one point. I recall one fellow [with a rather scary record of having being housed with the criminally insane ] busily rereading Mein Kampf. When I was young, the newspapers were full of the search for escaped SS 'war criminals'  like Adolph Eichmann to Brazil and Argentina [ which was incongruous with what we know of Operation Paperclip and their wholesale importation into the U.S.. ] while busily explaining how Werner von Braun and the Nazi rocket scientists were not such. So it is with a sense of 'deja vu' the idea of people being seemingly obsessed in a war in which my father lost so many fellow warriors is still discussed. Not that I haven't been personally puzzled by the Rudolph Hess episode, where his personal aide was put in Spandau prison for life including the duration of World War II - incommunicado - for daring to parachute into Britain on a peace mission from Hitler. Hitler had proclaimed he did not want war with Britain - loudly. We should remember PM Chamberlain believed him. )
