Who Would You Rather See Running America-- Someone Like Ed Rendell Or Charles Pierce?

The Spiritual Side of Mr. Lincoln

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 30 minutes ago
"It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: "And this, too, shall pass away." How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!" - Abraham Lincoln. I haven't seen the new Lincoln film. I want to see if it captures the spiritual side of the great man. He dreamed about his own death a few days before it happened. What Mattered This Week?

I continue to believe that the civil war in Syria matters a lot beyond the borders of that nation -- the chances of it disrupting the region in general remain high, and scary. So this I'll note this week's developments there. The question of who will be Secretary of State matters, but I wanted to throw in a bit of a reality check: it's less important than some of the other personnel questions, especially top White House staff. At any rate -- what do you have? What do you think mattered this week?

*It appears Bruce Wayne moved to Tel Aviv ~American Zombie*~That's interesting. We [the Corps of Engineers] have enough money to build a fucking batcave for another country half a world away but we don't have the money to protect the lives of our own citizens in South Louisiana...an area of the country that is absolutely critical to our nation's energy supply.

Alarm in Tehran and Moscow over Bushehr nuclear reactor’s near-explosion in mid-October

Is this what God would want one group of people to do to another? And lastly, why on Earth would any sane Christian support such behavior? Didn't Jesus teach us peace? One wonders if people need to return to their scriptures and refresh themselves, for today's behavi... more »

BENGHAZI BANANAS: Helderman on wheels!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 13 hours ago
*SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2012* *Sixth grade meets the Post:* On the front page of the Washington Post, Rosalind Helderman pens a loving portrait of Kelly Ayotte, Saint McCain’s new third amigo. Kelly Ayotte is the best! That said, we were puzzled by this pronouncement: HELDERMAN (12/1/12): Ayotte’s partnership with McCain and Graham on Benghazi began shortly after the attack, *which is now understood to have been an al-Qaeda effort to kill Americans.* Ambassador J. Christopher Stephens and three others died in the attack. Say what? The Benghazi attack “is now understood to have been ... more »

BENGHAZI BANANAS: When Liasson spoke!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 13 hours ago
*SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2012* *The truth turned upside down:* Do we have a banana republic press corps? Actually, yes—we pretty much do. Ongoing complaints about Susan Rice have made this abundantly clear. Regarding Rice, this new post at Media Matters refreshed us about what Mara Liasson said. Alas! We were watching Special Report on October 10 when Liasson, on loan from NPR, offered a jaw-dropping groaner. Liasson’s presentation simply reeked of rotting bananas. As she spoke, she recited a script which had been standard at Fox for several weeks at that point: LIASSON (10/10/... more »

By Capt. Fogg It's hard to believe these people actually exist and harder to believe they've managed to worm their way into positions of respect and influence in America -- but that's the kind of country we are, babbling about the bible, scrawling godblather on the walls, rolling on the floor making gargling noises, respecting and electing people who can't stop using God's names as toilet paper while shilling for the oil cartel. Take the American Family Association, which in the right wing tradition has named itself innocuously with insidious intent; wrapping itself in God, Gospel... more »

Margarita and family drying coffee in the new secadora We headed up into the hills this week, to beautiful, rainy forests and a family farm doing everything right. Then 45 minutes in a truck with Alex and Alexis, the OCDIH ag tech guys who guiding us. After a stop for breakfast in a woman’s tidy kitchen, we pushed up muddy... more »

How about that for a nice Hobson's choice? Yesterday even quintessential corporate whore and reactionary dinosaur Roy Blunt (R-MO) admits he may have no choice but to vote to increase taxes on the very rich (the GOP's financial base). Yeah, Blunt told a KTRS Missouri radio audience he's considering raising the marginal tax rates on the rich as part of the Obama-Boehner Grand Bargain-- as long as it's "balanced" with *lots* of pain and suffering for working families. John Thune (R-SD), a non-Mormon version of Romney with presidential ambitions, is on the same page. Blunt isn't up f... more »
