I just concluded a long conversation with my good friend, Whitewraithe, who writes the excellent blog: Pragmatic Witness, at www.pragmaticwitness.com. I want to let everyone who is a fan of her work know that she is doing a lot better than she has in quite a while. She was suffering from some burn out, and from a very hard work schedule. But she is back and has returned to putting up new articles at her Pragmatic Witness blog. She told me that she came across a most amazing video that I definitely had to listen to and to let her know what I thought. I said I would gladly have ... more »

I was horrified by the little story we listened to yesterday by Bill Moyers-- the one about hedge fund billionaire Ray Dalio comparing Americans to wildebeests being eaten alive by unregulated and ravenous hedge fund billionaires hyenas. I haven't been able to get Dalio's images, especially the horrific video I added to the post, out of my mind. And then, today I came across a radio interview-- the video above-- with Frederick Kaufman, food journalist and author of Bet The Farm. Kaufman makes the point that Wall Street is industrializing agriculture, driving farmers off the land ... more »

My Letter on Chen Shui-bian Incarceration Issues

Letter on Chen Shui-bian incarceration in Taipei Times today. My thanks to the editors for printing it. They cleaned up a typo and strengthened the beginning. Title is also better than I could have thought of... *+++++++++++++ * *Focus on urgent issues* William Cox’s letter (Nov. 26, page 8) is obviously well meant, but illustrates several major problems with foreigners commenting on former president Chen Shui-bian’s (陳水扁) medical issues. Such foreigners frequently err, as Cox does. For example, Chen has a desk and does not write on the floor. Errors like that enable opponents to... more »

Second, as Sarah Kliff reports, PPP invented and polled about an entirely fictional "Panetta-Burns" plan, and found that about a quarter of respondents were willing to state an opinion about it. India has served notice that its navy is ready to sail into the South China Sea to protect the country's oil interests there. *Indian Navy Chief Admiral D.K Joshi said that, while India was not a territorial claimant in the South China Sea, it was prepared to act, if necessary, to protect its maritime and economic interests in the region.* *"When the requirement is there, for example, in situations where our country's interests are involved, for example ONGC ... we will be required to go there and we are prepared for that," Joshi told a news conference.* *"Now, are we preparing fo... more »

The BBC are still obsessed by Israel daring to build in and around its capital city. They are less interested in the deaths of 29 children in a Syrian school today and all the other deaths that are happening in Syria every day. Why? The only explanation that I can think of is that the BBC are institutionally biased against Israel. I presume that is what the Balen Report concluded and that is why the BBC have fought so hard to keep it secret.

Nicola Verlato - dramatic visionary

Mike Philbin at FREE PLANET - 10 hours ago
here are the paintings of Nicola Verlato; I've made sure I got a representative shot of Nicola beside one of his 'Zero Gravity' works to give you an idea of scale BEFORE going into glorious detail. Nicola Verlato was born in Verona, Italy on the 19th of February 1965. He started to paint about the age of 7, and to sell his paintings about 9. His artistic education has been quite unorthodox, he consider himself almost self thought, however, from 9 to 14 ,he spent every summer at the studio of a monk-painter ( Fra' Terenzio) in the monastery nearby his village in northeast Italy, he ... more »

Terrorist attacks soar, India among most affected nations: Study

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 11 hours ago
The number of terrorist attacks each year has more than quadrupled in the decade since September 11, 2001, a study released on Tuesday said, with Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan the most affected. The number of annual deaths in attacks, however, peaked in 2007 -- the height of the Iraq conflict -- and has been falling ever since. The survey reported 7,473 fatalities in 2011, 25 percent down on 2007. That figure included dead suicide bombers and other attackers http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Terrorist-attacks-soar-India-among-most-affected-nations-Study/articleshow/17476111.... more »

A Christmas wish for a better children's home

Celeste, a new arrival at Angelitos I wanted to share the Christmas letter of the young Philadelphia woman who is trying to start a better foster home/orphanage for the children in Copan. My heart is with the kids at the current children's home, Angelitos Felices, but my dreams are pinned on Emily Monroe, as her project would definitely be the long-term solution to the endless problems at Angelitos. Orphanages and foster homes are all run in different ways in Honduras - from essentially private operations like Angelitos, which scratches up * centavos* wherever it can to provide bas... more »

Egypt: Clashes Outside Presidential Palace

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 11 hours ago
Egyptian riot police have fired tear gas at thousands of protesters in the streets outside the presidential palace. President Mohamed Morsi reportedly left the building as the protesters - who are demonstrating against sweeping new powers he granted himself and a new constitution that was rushed through by his supporters - broke through police lines. The tear gas was fired after a number of people cut through barbed wire erected a few hundred metres from the palace. The police then retreated allowing the protesters to reach the palace walls. http://news.sky.com/story/1020619/egypt-... more »

For FLA purposes a severance package is property on a date only if there is a fixes right to the severance on that date

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 11 hours ago
Dembeck v. Wright, 2012 ONCA 852 holds: [50] From these decisions it is clear that for a severance package to be considered property at the date of separation, there must be a right or entitlement to it at that date. As previously indicated, the *FLA*, in defining property does not distinguish between date of marriage and date of separation. It follows that, for a severance package to be considered property as of either of the two dates that form the basis of any equalization calculation, there must be a right or entitlement to it at that date.

Nato Backs Patriot Missile Systems For Turkey

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 11 hours ago
Nato has given the go ahead for Patriot surface-to-air missiles to be deployed along Turkey's border with Syria, according to an official. Turkey, which has strongly supported rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar al Assad, said it wanted the missile interceptor systems to counter the threat of attacks from Syrian weapons, possibly carrying chemical weapons. Nato Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen was expected to confirm the military alliance's support for the deployment in an announcement later on Tuesday in Brussels. http://news.sky.com/story/1020652/patriot-missile-... more »

Boehner & Cantor targeting independent-minded Republicans Late last month we looked at how pissed off the Republican grassroots was about how Boehner manipulated the process of picking committee chairs to come up with a bunch of obedient hacks. While the rest of the country was making fun of the GOP for being unable to make room for a woman chair-- they eventually "awarded" Candice Miller the chair of the policy-free Housekeeping Committee-- the far right was moaning that, other than California neo-fascist Ed Royce, there are no hard-core rightists in the chairs... although it's hard... more »

Iranian TV shows American drone it claims was shot down in Iranian airspace - but U.S. Navy says all its unmanned aircraft 'are accounted for'

The U.S. Navy today denied claims by Tehran that it had captured a U.S. drone after it entered Iranian airspace over the Persian Gulf. The Iranian government announced earlier that it was in possession of a ScanEagle drone and even showed an image on state TV which it claimed was the downed craft. But U.S. military chiefs quickly rebutted the reports, saying all its unmanned aircraft in the region were 'fully accounted for'. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2242845/U-S-Navy-shoots-claims-Iran-captured-ScanEagle-drone-Gulf.html

C'mon, NR!

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 12 hours ago
It's natural and normal that supporters of the majority party in the Senate will move over time to oppose filibusters and other minority protections, while supporters of the minority party will come to embrace those procedural checks. That opens everyone up to charges of hypocrisy, but I'm not concerned about that; I like that it gives everyone a chance to argue both sides of the issue, since both sides have a good deal of merit -- there's quite a bit to the notion of using a simple majority vote as a decision rule, but there's also quite a bit to the limits of majoritarianism. Why Spend a Fortune for a "Troubled" Anything?

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 12 hours ago
In news reports it's common to see the adjective "troubled" used in conjunction with F-35. It may, by common usage, become that warplane's new name - the "troubled F-35." The F-35 may fall short on speed, agility, payload, range and just about everything else that marks a great warplane but it's plenty long on troubles - engine troubles, systems troubles, design troubles and, oh yeah, cost troubles. Now PostMedia has gotten its hands on an internal document generated by bureaucrats showing that the Harper government was kept fully abreast of every step in the "troubled F-35 stea... more »
