Greenland Research Station Reveals Past and Future of Climate Change Impacts
this nondescript outpost is a magnet for scientists trying to answer some very big questions. Do clouds and tiny aerosol particles help warm or cool Greenland's ice and the air above it? How fast is the climate here changing? How quickly is Greenland's ice sheet melting?
Researchers established the first camp here in 1989, at the start of an international effort that drilled the 3,053-meter-long Greenland Ice Sheet Project-2 ice core, retrieving a record of climate over the previous 110,000 years.
That project ended in 1993. It wasn't until nearly a decade later, in 2000, that theNational Science Foundation turned the camp perched on the apex of Greenland's ice, 2 miles above bedrock, into a year-round research hub. The station, manned by a six-person crew in winter, hosts up to 50 people at a time during the bustling summer research season.
This year, Summit's list of long-term visitors includes Brandon Strellis, an environmental engineering graduate student from the Georgia Institute of Technology studying how aerosols influence how much energy is reflected and absorbed by Greenland's ice -- and where those particles are coming from.
One aerosol, black carbon, is of increasing concern for Arctic nations worried about the pace of climate change in the far north, which is warming twice as fast as the global average. Sooty particles of black carbon, produced by burning fossil fuels, wood and dung, warm the atmosphere by absorbing heat from the sun. And when they land on Greenland's snow and ice, their ability to absorb heat from sunlight increases surface melting.
Probing mysteries of soot and clouds
A study released in May by the Arctic Council suggests that, while countries below 40 degrees north latitude collectively contribute the lion's share of the world's black carbon output, Nordic countries' soot is the most damaging, because it has the shortest distance to travel to the Arctic.

Strellis said the project he's working on, organized by Georgia Tech professor Michael Bergin, seeks to determine whether black carbon is reaching the interior of Greenland's ice, and how it gets there.

The material, now stored at Savannah River Site's L Area, includes stainless-steel-clad fuel from the Sodium Reactor Experiment launched in California in the 1950s to determine whether nuclear power could provide household electricity.
Today, 36 cans of spent fuel from that project are among more than 15,000 used fuel assemblies stored at SRS, where their eventual disposition remains in limbo while the U.S. Energy Department struggles to reorganize the nation's nuclear waste management strategy.
When the cans were moved to L Area more than a decade ago, three of them had ruptured due to excessive fuel corrosion, causing high cesium-137 contamination inside the sealed, oversized cans, the report said, and uranium fuel in one can was so corroded that it left 36 kilos of oxide sludge at the bottom.
Because of its condition, the material was earmarked in 2000 for disposal at the site's H Canyon facility, "but this has yet to occur," the board wrote.
"The staff is concerned that DOE may continue to store fuel, some with through-clad breaches, indefinitely at L-Basin," the board said. "The current condition of many of these items is unknown since DOE has not inspected them since they were packaged decades ago."

Our Probability of Being Chosen in a Nation of Suspects
TSA screeners are about to implement Orwellian behavioral inspections at airport security checkpoints. Who are these TSA screeners? These are the same low-level, incompetent, scandalous, molesting, abusive, and in some cases criminal people who have been creating one scandal after another. So what will these scandalous, incompetent and criminal police be doing to detect suspicious behavior? Most likely you have guessed it right. They will be watching you and maybe questioning you to determine whether you are suspicious, a suspect, or not. How are they going to do that, and based on what guidelines? According to their vague description, they will be looking for your “micro expressions,” such as lack of eye contact, acting agitated or nervous, that might “hint” at nefarious intent. How much hint is needed to be pulled over as a suspect? They don’t say. How agitated is considered suspiciously agitated? They don’t say that either. How much eye-aversion would count as a suspicious level of eye-aversion? They say nothing on that. How do the odds of being chosen by them increase by their own mood, biases, and various psychoses? Well, they don’t mention that either.
Basically, a bunch of already-proven incompetent, abusive, biased, and criminal people who have been high on their government-given limitless powers will be freely using their subjective judgment on whether you look or act suspicious, or not. Now I want you to think about agitation, eye-aversion, nervousness, being stressed out, being shy …Think about it, and then calculate the odds of you being determined a suspect, thus one of their chosen ones:

“WHY would I try to smuggle explosives ON the plane when I could just wear an explosive vest and detonate it in the Security Checkpoint line where it would produce similar casualties? Why would I try to smuggle a bomb onto a plane I’M IN when it’s far easier for me to sit at the end of the runway with a shoulder-fired heat-seeking SAM launcher waiting for the plane and it’s heat plume to go overhead? Why would I want to bring down a plane full of INNOCENT people when I could, just as easily, sit at the end of the TAOS airport with that SAME SAM waiting for DONALD RUMSFELD’S corporate jet to take off and actually kill GUILTY people?
